Title: Settings question: Do nolthir speak underwater?
Post by: Chessire on January 27, 2012, 05:55:39 pm
I have had this question for a while, since I met it a couple of times in rps. The race info shows they do remain under the water for long periods, so how do they communicate? Can they speak? They use signs with their hands? Use telepathy? Anything?

You can't form distinct sounds in a liquid, though you can modulate a precise tonality... I'd say a language based on signs and tonalities, I've heard a couple Nolthrir refer to it ingame.

I'm interested in Nolthrir specific armor and weapons also. Underwater gear should be quite different.

steel plate isn't so conducive to swimming. an airy, light yet highly durable mythril like metal would be better. Or scale armor.

Galkards are built for underwater iirc.

I know that the kelp the nolthrir cultivate can be very resistant. Perhaps a special kind of seaweed, treated to be stronger and manufactured as some kind of "leather" armor could be used, while being tight fitting and allowing to move properly without hindering any movement too much, like neoprene. As for the language, the best option is body language. Maybe this could be a poll? Some setting developer should start one.
