Title: Old account
Post by: Lode on February 12, 2012, 03:09:31 pm
Hello,

I had made an account in Planeshift in 2002, and played the game, but then didn't anymore until now.

Unfortunately I don't remember my game account details from back then, but did remember this forum account. Logically, my old game account would either be the email address of my forum account or the username of it, but that doesn't seem to work...

Should accounts made in 2002 in the still work today, or do I have to make a new one?

Out of mysery I made a new account in game. But if I try to name my character as my first name, it says that this name is banned. My first name is totally not offensive, why is it banned?

Thanks!

Welcome back, Lode! \\o//

Unfortunately, very old accounts (last used more than 3 years ago) were indeed deleted. So you will probably have to re-register to the current game server - http://planeshift.zeroping.it/register/newaccount.php

To be certain if it is necessary (and why the name you chose is not available, possibly already used by another player?), try to contact weltall in a PlaneShift IRC channel on FreeNode.

Ok, thanks!

It's pretty certain then that my account no longer exists. Probably not such a big loss anyway, I don't think you could actually level back then so nothing of much value will be lost. It would just have been cool to play with that so old and forgotten character!

I'd really still love to call my character Lode though, the old one was also named that!

That word does have a negative slang meaning in certain English speaking regions. Perhaps it has been added to the bad words file since last using it.

What meaning would that be? The word means a source of ore, that's all. Now, if you are referring to a load of s•••, then the load is not the vulgar part of that phrase. Classifying a lode as a bad word is a real leap, and maybe it's not on the bad words list because ... It's not a bad word.

You might want to contact Talad, it may be that you need to verify it was your character's name to be able to use it again. Then again nouns, adjectives and other real words as first name are not are not allowed under current naming policy (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=31960.msg367015#msg367015) so that could be the whole problem -- see number 10.

Hi Lode, you should check if you're entitled to a ring of the past. :)

What meaning would that be?

It is refers to an aspect of reproduction in certain English speaking areas.

Does that make "head" a "bad word" too?
What about "meat", "bag", "bang", "pole", "oven" ?

none of those would be usable character names anyways.

i don't think that would stop him at the point of character creation, I think that's the type of thing a GM would have to notice and ask him to change. I may be wrong though.

It could just be that all old character names are in the database and so trigger the non unique filter, or that a small dictionary of real words is also in the DB.

If its what I think you mean, it has nothing to do with reproduction itself. But if we are going to dig that deep for terms to ban, then we should start with roleplay. That has many more nasty references out there than this word. Banned words should be common and easily referenced, going after every phrase that might have been misused at some point, somewhere is a waste of time.

Wipe the Stonehammers for having a nasty name.

this has certainly led to some awkward conversations:

friend calling on the phone: Hey, what are you up to?
Me: Engaging in some role play.
friend: Uhhhhh.... <click>

Well, no problem, I'll just use another name, I won't make it more complex than necessary any further :)

but.... making things more complex than necessary is the name of this game.

when gm change names the old names are banned at the same time. so someone in the past took that name and it was changed because  it was against the rules. that's all.
