Title: Mog's Models
Post by: Mogweh on February 19, 2012, 11:40:48 pm
I'm having fun with this 3D modelling monkey business. Here's my first serious attempt at a head and torso:

Re-work the body detail (her ears are way too big) and then clothes are next...

I had an impromptu night off from studying  :-[ and worked on the torso, see above.

If you are interested, I work from several photos of a model (female in the above case) which I scale to the same proportions. I also use a generic topology map as a guide to the mesh structure. This is very important if you want the model to deform correctly when animated. I've made a couple of models:

(http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/3593/aliend.png)(http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2583/mellyfinalweb.png)(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2721/kranfullyrigged.png)

Alien: The first thing I ever made for a tutorial. His body moved okay, but the eyelid had little function. If the geometry and topology had been designed a little better it would have been able to cover the eye.
Mellas: I took the basic frame from makehuman then rearranged and re-rigged her for animation. The joints were a mess as I made her just for this image. In a way she is the reason I started modelling, so thanks Mellas :)
Kran: I modeled kra from a box, his arms were modelled at his side so when he tries to raise them above the neck his shoulders do a lot of weird things. Again, with a decent topology and modeling kra with his arms out, it would have allowed for a full range of motion.

All of these move, but without the full range of motion. As you can see I have made a lot of mistakes. So, fingers crossed with this new one ;)

You may know about it but if not you will certainly want to check this, I have heard its the most complete and popular  guide for character modeling

nb: click on images to make them larger and smaller
Quickly made clothes experiment. Not sure which I like the best.

okay, I am sure ;)

NOW I can make a sword.

You should apply for the team. I hear they're short on artists.

Couple of shiny swords. todo: Boots and hair then the dreaded texturing *gulp* and low poly modelling.

I'm also working on a scene based on the concept art of the talented Jilata. Central to this will be a statue of Dakkru. Here's a little preview of Jilata's sculpture being remodelled (as a test) to a lower poly count for the scene. Also, a drawing of the type of house we will be using.

Talk of dakkru and houses..
Thinking about it that house looks like it would go well with the death realm
Perhaps you should [join the team] work on expanding the death realm, as it is supposedly endless (?) It definitely needs to be bigger than it is. And I personally like the idea of there being a town in the death realm, or a small settlement, where people who have come to the death realm, and settled there, decided not to search for a way out.
Those houses could be used.

That is exactly the idea Earowo. One of my chars is supposed to have lived in the DR for a while. Simple said, the area I thought of is made of those houses, either with a first floor or only a ground floor. It is kind of a village stretching over a few islands or some smaller village's close together. How you prefer to see it.

*blushes*
You are good as well Mogweh. Being able to create models from my scribbles...

I tried various reddy pinky veiny effects, most of them made her look stoned like she had been up for 3 days.

Looks like those eyes are wearing contacs

heh, yeah it did. I cleaned up the iris image as the edges were being refracted by the cornea and giving the impression of a contact lens. If you are interested, the eye model is composed of 2 parts: an eyeball (containing the iris) and a cornea. The cornea covers the eyeball. It is transparent and refracts the light, it also produces the shine. You can see the bump on the un-rendered model:
