Title: I don't even.
Post by: Noobstorm on September 03, 2012, 02:44:51 am
I thought I might give PS another try, so I did some thievery. In return, someone snatched an item using lame god mode powers such as 5x gravity, and stupid ground shifting spells. Not only that, his armor deflected my melee hits.

Wtf is this? Can someone explain to me how RP combat is supposed to work?

Incredible Weight is a canon spell. Armor would probably deflect most melee attacks, assuming your character was unarmed. It's not godmoding unless they're giving you absolutely no way to resist, however it's also godmoding if you logically wouldn't have a way to resist (for example, no magic to resist a Brown Way spell like IW) and do anyway.

As for how RP combat works, you want to make the attack without implying or outright stating you've hit the other person, and leave them room to react to the attack. You also want to take into account common sense (an unarmed character in nothing but a loincloth is probably going to lose against a character in armor with a sword unless they're a powerful mage with quick reflexes).

RP combat between OOC strangers is generally a bad idea in my experience, though. It usually leads to complaining like this, or the IC fight degerating into an OOC argument. The best way to go about it is RP with someone for a while, learn their style, and if your styles and OOC personalities mesh decide whether an IC fight is going to work or not. Then again, this is coming from someone who doesn't usually like playing fights.

In general, a "roleplayed fight" is not using "/challenge", only "/say" and "/me" etc.

+1 on Candy's advice.

People don't typically want to die or get mugged for another person's amusement... even though its their character, and not them that's being attacked. Some folks are clueless about ic/ooc separation while others are pretty decent. Some like rough play, some don't.

Playing a baddie is hard because you need to do it in a way that's entertaining to yourself and your victim. You also need to build up a reputation both in character and out of character as someone who people will want to play with. Someone who people will yield to - trusting that you will entertain them either now or later. They want something in return.

You also need to be aware of whether the other player is miffed by your IC actions and need to be able to communicate oocly where needed.

I encourage you to keep trying, and to find ways to make your rp entertaining to others. Follow the examples of other players who have successfully played bad guys when possible and try to figure out what worked for them.

Whisper Bless

From my own experience, a "graceful surrender" is already advanced roleplaying. It takes some willpower to surrender deliberately.

Consciously playing out your own defeat in RP is definitely an acquired virtue, at least for me it was...is...will be  ;D

Whene  in doubt always remember that the /roll command is available. In OOC one can come to agreement to any modifiers each may or may not have and then let the dice decide. My last encounter with a thief had us agree that she was fairly experienced and gave her appropriate modifiers when trying her pickpocket on my character. It was a lot of fun; she saying she had her heart beating during the roll. Her successful roll won her 10,000 greatful circles tria from my character for a fun rp.

If next time we meet we have set the standard of her experience and dice should not be required.

This was either 10,000 tria, or you're really... for losing almost 3 million trias. Honestly.
