Title: [GM event] Yarir brings his collection of books to the 3rd Arts and Crafts Fair
Post by: Venalan on November 26, 2012, 07:01:19 am
I, Yarir Bralos am pleased to announce our third Arts and Crafts fair.

On [December 15th between 20:00-22:00 GMT] me and my associate will again be setting up stalls. As with last time the fair will be set up in the market place just within city gates.

Due to the continued popularity of the fairs we have arranged the supply of cooking and alchemy equipment again as well as a small stage for any who wish to perform or do readings.

We have also been given a selection of tokens by Vigesimi Stronghand to thank those who take part in the fair.

As with the previous fairs our books will be the main attraction.

Our books will be fairly priced and I quote 'worth their weight in gold'.

Come and see the latest books that even Jayose has only just got hold of, thanks to me...!

We also welcome any and all that have books poems, stories or any other written work to come and join us and sell your works.

Time permitting we will also be looking at the other books people bring and depending on quality will give you the oppertinuty to add them to our ever growing and expanding collection!

**Signed Yarir Bralos**

OOC stuff now;

As with the last fair it will be run in the same place at the same time, on December 15th.

I was a bit disappointed that no one submitted any books/stories/poems or anything to the team to be included officially in PS last time round.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help us make PS better by writing some texts for us.

So again, Eonwind has said he will be popping along with some sort of alchemist or alchemical fun. I hope Mordaan will have time this time round to come and help on the cooking stage.

Sarva will be running the book stall.

I will be wandering about talking to all those I get a chance too.

And I hope the Knowledge Seekers or others can take a lead in running the readings/music/cooking competitions.

We are going to be expanding a number of different aspects of the fair to try and boost attendance and participation.

1 - KA triggers so that NPCs will be advertising the fair in the about 10 days leading up to the fair.

2 - Octarch sponsored travel tokens for all those taking part in aspects of the fair, good for one free trip on any Pterosaur.

3 - Expanding the cooking competition. This is what you will do.. Design a recipe, pick your ingredients how you make them and the final item (using ingredients that we have in game already would be best). Come up with a description and final dish name. Me or another GM will make a specially named item for you to use at the fair. You RP making it using the cooking stuff and once you are done you get the item, you place the item on the table and the players (to be decided who) pick the winner. The winning recipe will be made into a real craftable item and included in a special cook book that will be sold once made (disclaimer: we might modify the recipe to fit better, and if you make something stupid and it wins we wont be using it.) Some more details about this will likely follow.

I would like some things from you as well,

comments/ideas: I always like constructive ideas. Slight adjustments, additions, removals... whatever you want to say. They might not get used this time, maybe next time.

/me blushes

Uh, you are ... challenging. If it was already quite a miracle to bring together so many members close to our 6th Anniversary, I don't know how to call it if we can repeat our presence another time. ;D

I should be there with books and various other items and curios to sell. I'll be trying a new item for sale, diaries. We'll see how that goes over. I will also have a recipe to knock your socks off. Come time for the cooking aspect, I might close up shop while I set about making my contribution. RPing cooking is my oldest RP after all.  ;)

Just a couple of rules to follow while designing the new recipe:
- it's better to use basic ingredients already available in-game (sold by npc, harvested, animal parts), this will make easier for us to introduce your recipe in game
- try to keep the steps (actions) needed to complete your recipes under 10 or so (this is not mandatory but greatly encouraged - too long recipes will be simplified or adapted)
- naming convention: do not use characters name in the recipe name (it's fine to use NPC names as long as it fits settings) otherwise you would loose property of the char name and we DO NOT want that.
- licence: for the recipe to be released in game the winner must sign ABC licence, no exception and no complains [and this thread is not the place to talk about PS licencing issues] - if you don't want to sign the licence nothing restrain you from participating the competition, just be aware we can't include your work in game and complaining won't help.
- helping us: I'm glad and very happy to see any of your work become available in game and creating the data for this to happens (which is a lot of work), we would be glad if you could help us in the process that will make your work available in game. This is not mandatory but will be very appreciated! :)

Ok and with the licensing thing I'm out for getting something included, but I did realize while working on steps that one problem might be not knowing what is already available. What I mean is that if your character doesn't have the actual skill training, you won't know what is possible and what items already exist such as batters or ingredients that have been processed a bit already(ground ingredients or some such).

Is this where you will make adaptations? It would be nice so that people don't miss out simply because they haven't had the time to train their characters' up to their RP cooking level. It would be nice if someone who had a good idea but maybe not as informed an execution could win, but they would simply have to watch their recipe get reworked so that it fit with what already existed.

Sorry if you have issue with the licence but it's not an option. However I hope it won't stop you from being part of the competition, RP has nothing to do with licensing.

The important thing is IT'S NOT REQUIRED ANY SKILL TRAINING AT ALL. The only thing I suggest is checking the in-game merchants/plants (no training is required at all for this) to check if the ingredients you want are available or if not you may consider changing a missing ingredient with and existent one (I suggested to use existent ingredients because, believe it or not, it ease the development work so much).

You don't need to care about the intermediate ingredients name or anything like that, all missing/new items will be created. Don't even worry about spitting your recipe in the same exact steps like the crafting books are done: I added the "helping us" requirement/request exactly for the need to translate/adapt normal recipe like you'd write in RL into something craft-able for PS.

I hope this solve any doubt, if not please ask and I'll be glad to clarify.

I still plan on doing the RP part, especially if I still get an item renamed and a description. :D It's easy enough to use an IC explanation on why the recipe isn't included in the book. However, what I was worried about was the intermediate ingredients. When I worked out the recipe I had done it in the way they are presented in the books, and then I realized that I started using all preexisting ingredients, tools, and actions(such as cut and spreading) but in the course of 7 steps I had come up with 6 intermediate ingredients. But as long as that's ok, I think everyone should be fine.

Hey GMs all~
Thanks again for planning another Book and Arts Fair event. I am sure it will go great!~  \\o//

Because of school obligations I won't be able to attend this one,  ::| and probably some others may step up to organize and invite folks ingame, and to host the stage. Here's your chance, take the stage over from Roled the Ham (or Hamlet, since he's such a small elf indeed) and be the emcee/ organizer!

Have fun, sorry to miss it this time

First Arts and Crafts Fair, couldn't attend because I had to pick out a Brides Maid's dress.

Second Arts and Crafts Fair, couldn't attend because I had to go in for said dress's alterations.

Third Arts and Crafts Fair. Wedding itself.

I THINK I'M CURSED OR SOMETHING!  :o

/me walks off grumbling something about hating dresses.

Ok guys, girls, and others.

I've not been able to get in game much as of late so I haven't been able to spread word about the next fair as much as I'd like. I hope some players are able to do this like they did last time (and if you aren't please start telling people about it). The KAs should also appear in game soon so will help with letting everyone know about it.

If the Knowledge Seekers are unable to take the lead, and other players don't volunteer then I will do it.

I am hoping that the majority of the fairs like this that are planned set up by Devs and GMs can have a lot of player involvement, much like last one where Rolled essentially ran the whole thing. The cooking competition I have put some extra rewards into is because of his work with the first one. More players who do things the more ideas of theirs I can use and expand on and the bigger the whole thing gets.

No panic. Of course the KS are interested. At least Erelenga should be available. Roled will try but can't promise. Cirerey is probably away... The rest did not yet reply, though.

Therefore I wouldn't mind a little support from other guilds who are related to poetry, art and crafting.

ah. timezone differences mean that most of The One guild can't be represented at these fairs, unfortunately. we do try to help with publicity and organising, in a limited capacity.

I may or may not be there. It largely depends on whether or not I get to go see The Hobbit that day, but I wouldn't count on my being there.

The last fair was awesome, though, and I highly encourage anyone to get involved in this!

If I may make a suggestion for the fair goers. Since there will be so many people at the fair, conversations will overlap greatly and cause confusion. Where you can, please try to include the name(s) of the people you talk to in what you write so that it will highlight for them and they can easily keep up with what you are saying. You might have to resort to an OOC [<playername>:] before what you write just to make sure it highlights for them.

However, this will make it a nicer experience for everyone.

Sorry to double post here, but I would like to make a reminder that the Fair is today and will be starting at 20 gmt. That is less than an hour and a half from the time of this post.

So, time for my little post event comments.

I think this went well, but it was not as busy as last time so it looked a little empty at times. So even with the NPCs advertising it much fewer people came which to me speaks to the importance of players helping to advertise the fair and get their friends to come. The peak for this event was counted at 31 (14 down from last time) and a total of 49 different characters were present during the during the event (18 down from last time). Assuming my data gathering was correct.

I'd like to thank Erelenga from the Knowledge seekers who again came and RPed and help run it. Its much easier with more people so if a guild/group wants to take the lead next time just post here or let me know.

The cooking competition was expanded from last time, at least in terms of reward. And our winner this time was Lanara, and his/her recipe will be made into a crafting book which will be sold in game as soon as everything is ready. I would also like to thank Dahserai and Kolela for taking part in the competition, I hope you come back next time as well and try again.

I would like to thank all the merchants who set up their stalls and increased the variety of the fair as like i said last time its players wanting to take part in these things that make them big and fun. We as Devs/GMs rely on you coming.

Thanks also go to Mordaan (Mirra), Sarva (Yarir), Eonwind (Danow) and Taya (Zahla) for running their individual stalls/characters.

I would like to thank all the following players/characters for turning up (I'm really sorry if I missed you when i was gathering names, anyone not on the list is not missed out on purpose, sorry in advance.)

Afelele, Alasia, Bagrik, Binagh, Bonifarzia, Churr, Ciginie, Dahserai, Damola, Danow, Darthar, Dharah, Dorbaine, Eina, Erelenga, Ezh, Firke, Geneo, Gerar, Gonger, Gorub, Haraun, Hromdair, Hulla, Jacker, Jilare, Kianis, Kolela, Lanara, Laros, Lingwelli, Lizzy, Medisi, Mirra, Nehala, Phadraig, Qed, Rasa, Rheos, Sanrai, Skelbellor, Wocib, Wolferz, Wrenn, Xola, Yallin, Yarir, Zahla, Zantatous, Zirkon

For the future, we will be having another fair some time next year. With the turn out we had this time i think we will keep the scale the devs/gms had with input the same.

If any player/guild has an idea for something they want to do please contact me and I'm sure we will be able to work something out for the next fair.

Thanks and Bye Venalan.

I liked the fair, I think it was a lot of fun. I was also pleasantly surprised to see most of the stalls filled. However, I think the general populace could have RPed more to help build up the atmosphere. Some more "characters" haunting the place would have been nice. Anyone want to play town drunk or drama queen next time? And maybe a little more emoting while browsing and buying at the stalls. There is a variety of things that can be done between clicking the examine button and clicking the trade button.

However, I do have some suggestions for the fair. Although I kinda hate to suggest this, since I would like at least something to not center around combat related things, perhaps you would get more of a response if you repeated this kind of competition except use weapons instead of food. By that I mean a renamed item and description to let players make custom weapons. The downside is that they wouldn't be able to "make" them on the spot. It would have to be prepared in advance. To compensate, perhaps you could have players show off the weapon and describe it in front of the crowd.

The other idea would be to have a bar set up at the fair that would allow people to custom mix drinks. Maybe have a competition for that if there was enough interest in it. How about selling familiars? Can you change familiars to another one? I'm sure there are some people with yulbars that would rather have groffels and so on. Maybe selling exotic alchemy goods for RP and causing specific RP situations, a powder to change eye color, give longer ears, cure balding, enhance attractiveness, cause hiccups, turn people into frogs, etc. I had moderate success selling RP knick-knacks and I probably would have sold more if I hadn't been busy with the competition.

Another thing I noticed is that once you do the competition, the end of it is typically the end of the fair. however, I think that is kinda because players seem to forget that they can still keep RPing and doing things even after the blue names leave. ;) I was prepared to keep trying to sell some more since I didn't get as much sold as I had hoped but everyone left like they were kicked out and to be honest it was kinda like that before the start. People didn't want to go before the absolute start time. It's like people think they are only allowed to muck around in the area when the blue names are around otherwise they have to stay away. Maybe it would help if a GM or dev reminds people that they can use the area before and after the GMs and Devs leave.

Suggestions aside, I think the fair was well executed.

Yesterday we've been selling perfume and fragrances to provide goods for people to RP with (note that most of them are functional items as well). But like you said Illisia why not selling hair dyes, or things like that. I'm in favor to sell stuff useful for day to day RP.

I think changing familiar is not something we can do, not that easily at least: basically I think it requires a direct DB change, something quite difficult to handle :( but I like the idea. [perhaps a possible solution could be running an auction to avoid having to change tents/hundreds of familiars]

Just a notice for everyone: the fair setup (stalls, crafting stations, pillows, ...) are there for all of you to use, RP with and such, so feel free to use it as you wish. NPC merchants/crafters are not there to steal players space so we (dev) would be glad if all the stalls are players run.

First a little excuse ... I wish I could have played again with two clients, bringing two characters to the fair. But the last time I already learned how much hustle that means; and this time, I was even more active as host. Furthermore, I even disappeared from the company christmas party to be there.  :sweatdrop:

I'm sure there are some people with yulbars that would rather have groffels ...

Most probably.  :whistling:

... and so on.

Ehm ... what else?!  ???

A Bagga, maybe. If it was implemented. But Karyuu  :-X

Probably the main problem with the low turnout was just that it's the holidays...

Technically LigH you shouldn't have to play more than one character at a time so no need for an excuse. ;)

However, I would think that the holidays would keep players out of the game not out of the fair. I saw a 76 player peak but there was only 30 something people maintained. Last fair it was a 78 player peak and 45 people maintained. I think it is more a drop in interest than preoccupation.

Don't let those player numbers discourage you, it is difficult to extract some meaningful information from such a small piece of statistics, and indeed people tend to be occupied with other things these days.

I think it is time for another big thank you, this series of events is well organized, and I cannot remember any events in the past where the coherence between players, GMs, prospects and devs was as nice as we experienced it here.

Nice event, and I'm not just saying that to get my post count up to 10. I had an enjoyable rp, bought a shiny new book and made a future rp connection. However, my char was a wee bit put out there was no bar.

The bar faux pas aside, it was a pleasant was to pass the evening.

Thanks to all involved in organizing this. See you at the next one :)

Bumping this thread as a new cooking competition has been announced and much of the information in this thread will be applicable to the next competition. Especially those on rules, which items you should use, how many steps, and the necessity to agree to and sign the contributors license before any item can be used in game.
