Title: Crashing on Linux Ubuntu

The game crashes after I pick a character and try to enter the world. It loads and when the bar fills up it crashes on my desktop. Any ideas?

Not unless you name your processor, graphic card, version of your operating system and post the errorlog.  :P

I run Linux Ubuntu ver. 12.10 My processor is an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2,50GHz and my graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT. Also I have 2GB RAM. Sorry but I am a total noob on Linux. I didn't get an error log when the game crashed, but perhaps you mean something else?

Good news: You should have sufficient hardware.

It may be useful to start ./psclient from a large console and quote the last error messages after the crash; Linux clients will write most of it in the console, in contrast to Windows clients, which create an "errorlog.txt" instead.

Unfortunately, the reported errors are often the least critical, and the reason for the crash is the only error not being reported...

Do you actually use Nvidia driver or Nouveau?

What is the output of

glxinfo is part of the mesa-utils package (install it first if you don't have it).

It may be useful to start ./psclient from a large console and quote the last error messages after the crash; Linux clients will write most of it in the console, in contrast to Windows clients, which create an "errorlog.txt" instead.

Unfortunately, the reported errors are often the least critical, and the reason for the crash is the only error not being reported...

I don't get what you're saying to me. As I said I'm a total noob on Linux. Could you be more specific? And yes I use an Nvidia driver

You can open the "Terminal" (via menu or maybe with a shortcut, possibly Ctrl+Alt+T?) and use a "bash" console to navigate in the filesystem and start programs. But if you never did that before, better look for a tutorial how to do that; explaining it here in the forum would be quite elaborate.

I installed the mesa-utils pack and now I can enter the game though all I get is a black screen and the toolbar. EDIT: I changed the settings and know I can see my character and houses and trees, but the rest is still black and the game lags a lot.

Then you may not have the correct drivers installed. I know that PlaneShift can run fluidly in highest resolutions under Linux with a GeForce GT 9600 and the proprietary Nvidia drivers version 2xx (nvidia-latest).

I am not the Linux expert, but you will probably find more requests for detailed hardware and driver information in many, many, many other threads in this and related subforums.

Yes, you gave the answer yourself:
Ooops! You are right, I use nouveau driver. Sorry for that.

The nouveau driver cannot run planeshift. You will have to install the proprietary nvidia driver, which works nicely.

Maybe someone can give you tested links for ubuntu-12.10.

Ubuntu should have the proprietary Nvidia drivers in their package manager (Synaptic). Maybe even in their software library, but I don't use Unity, so I don't use that tool.

Thank you both for your help, I really appreciate it. What I meant to say is that: Is there any way so that I will be able to play the game with a High or Highest setting in shaders? The models are too dark now with the lowest setting. Also, about the nvidia driver. If I installed the wrong one, could it damage my pc? Once again thank you and by the way, LigH, it really does take a lot more to be evil than just to act like mad  :devil:

The most important prerequisite for high quality gaming is installing a feature-complete driver. In your case, probably named "nvidia-latest" instead of "nouveau" or similar.

I know that this driver will match your card, I have a very similar card in one of the PCs in my access range.

Live help in an IRC chat channel may be more useful than waiting for any more Linux experienced readers stumbling upon this thread...

Not every latest driver supports all cards, especially some older cards can work only with older drivers but if you will go on nvidia web into download section, select your graphic card and operating system, it will offer you the correct download (probably latest working drivers for your card).

Well, for Ubuntu, I believe the distributor managed driver installation should be preferred. I can't check it before next monday, though...

Nvidia dropped support for their Geforce 7xxx series. All cards from 8xxx and up should be still supported.

You can still find drivers for their older cards on their FTP server (even for the old nvidia TNT2 M64 - not that it would work with Planeshift or newest kernels, but it's still there).

Why the concern about Generation 7? RevanXXXIII already reported using a 9800. And this one is still supported by "nvidia-latest". I have a 9600. It works.
