Title: Change Planeshift username/email
Post by: grossetti on March 17, 2013, 06:12:36 pm
Hi,

I created an account a while ago using my then-current email. The provider got sold to another and thus my email has changed and then I created an internet provider agnostic email address that I use as my main address. Luckily the new provider currently forwards from my old email to their new one, but I don know how long they will do that. I would like to change me account's email address to my current email address so that I don't lose my account. I could not find anywhere on the site how to do that.

Can someone please tell me how to do this? Changing your email address is not something that is uncommon.

Thanks,
Gabriel

As far as I know, you can't change the email for the account but I might be wrong. As for the game, it doesn't really matter since you only need it for activation of an account and password retrieval. I haven't had access to one of my account emails for years and it hasn't really mattered but keep good track of your password.

The email address is an identifier of your game account and therefore has to be unique. If at all, you would need a developer with rather direct database access if changing the email address of the game account is important. There are only very few. Talad will be one of them.

If you want to have the email address of your forum account changed (which is not related to the game account), a forum administrator would be required. Talad or acraig would be your contacts then.

You can change your own email for the forum by going into the profile drop down menu upon the blue bar and selecting account settings.

Thanks, it is the Planeshift account email I wanted to change and not the forum one. I was afraid that if I forgot my password (as I had this time) and I could no longer have access to that email I would lose my player. However, upon logging for the first time in a couple of years my player was deleted so I guess I might as well create a new account since I lost all my hard worked for artifacts and all my gold :-(.

I understand that it has to be a unique identifier (I am a developer) but usually you use a non-business key (e.g. GUID) in DBs these days so that you can change the data (e.g. email) and mark the unique data as unique (e.g. email) s you don't get duplicates.

I guess the devs have other more important things to worry about, although IMO it should be fixed one day.

Thanks everyone!

It's unlikely we deleted your character unless the last login was 4+ years ago.

Yes, that sounds about right...probably in 2008/2009, I no longer had time to play :-(

In this case, it is so long ago, and so much has changed since ... it probably doesn't matter much to start a new character.

As far as an in game account, it doesn't really matter if it's an "active" email account or not.

I created my account in 2004.  After a short while I no longer used it.  It wasn't even a valid domain anymore.  But it didn't effect PS at all.  In fact, it was inactive so long, last year I discovered the domain was legit again so I recreated the account.   ;D

As far as PS, all it really is is an identifier.  It just needs to be active when you create your initial PS account.
