hi all,
I find that reading the in-game books, like the 'working with stocks' one is really annoying in-game.
Is there any way to extract their text so I can read them out-of-game in a text editor?
-
Are you aware of the /study command? The text is much easier to read and even a search function is included.
Before that was implemented, I used to type the books into a text editor or extract the text with wireshark. To be honest, both methods are about equally tedius.
-
That's a feature that is a bit problematic in the sense that details of game rules and settings, or books written by other players are not meant to be easily accessible to the public. At least as far as I understood. But maybe there are some modifications around that can do this *shrug*.

I wasn't .... \\o// that's definately a much, much better interface for reading the books
-
Even with the /study command it can be hard to understand. Don't be afraid to ask for help with crafting in gossip or even in main if you can keep it IC.

I use Wireshark to capture the info. Essentially, start recording with Wireshark and then open the book. Once it's open stop the recording and take a look at the udp stream. There will be some junk data, but the text of the book will be in there.

Isn't that against the rules?

I certainly hope not. I'm not changing the information being sent in either direction, and looking at the packets doesn't reveal any information that isn't available to players who simple open the books.

To quote the rules thread.
[...]
Hacking
[...]
You will not attempt to interfere with, hack into, or decipher any transmissions to or from the servers running Planeshift.
[...]
-
It's not against the rules. Reading your own network traffic is perfectly fine.
-
Since when are you an expert on GM issues? Sure looks like "hacking into transmissions from the server" to me.
-
Our word for the day apparently is… tedium.

Tedium :sorcerer:
Alvero Alenciar, stabbed shadowcaster and overworked book writter.
-
or perhaps "inconsistency"?
Those who are allowed are allowed inconsistency, those who aren't aren't? ::)
-
Nope, its still tedium.

Since it's traffic coming to you. You are not hacking into anything. If you claim you can't read your own traffic it's some kind of police state your are talking about.

What's a police state Gilrond?
-
I'm sure it sounded just dandy to whoever wrote it xD
You know, this sort of thing happens when a non-technical person gets the task of writing these things and the tech folks don't really care enough to read what they wrote and correct it.

Like Oceania in 1984 ;)
