I remember when people would start to duel in the middle of Kada's interrupting nearby RPs and breaking settings all in one shot. it's been my experience in RPing abroad that many games have the same problem and it gives the same impression. The impression is that tavern fights are crude to bad RP and that no one reputable would or should get caught up in one.
However, I've been thinking and I've revised my view. Obviously there is some appeal to having a fight break out in a bar, otherwise it wouldn't come up. In some cases, it may even be justified by settings. So what's the problem? It looks like the real issues is a lack of consideration on the part of the people RPing in and around the brawl.
To me, this means there is a way to bridge the gap and compromise. We can give everyone what they want. I present to you the Tavern Brawl Agreement!
________________________
The Tavern Brawl Agreement
- Both brawlers and potential spectators will attempt to respect each other and RP side by side peaceful. Mutual respect should be shown for the other group's RP.
- Spectators will react ICly instead of trying to end the RP OOCly as long as the brawl stays within settings and does not attempt to godmod anyone into unwillingly participate in the brawl.
- Brawlers will make an effort to keep the brawl within IC bounds. This means no prolonged fighting in taverns with strict anti fight rules or high security. No weapon fights in taverns where you can throw a punch but you can't carry a weapon openly on the street, and no killing in bars located in the middle of major cities.
- Brawlers will also take care to check OOCly with surrounding/nearby RPers to make sure that their fight won't completely destroy someone else's RP.
- Brawlers will have an IC reason for starting the fight, as in something other than I was OOCly bored.
- Everyone will respect the settings designated authorities, such as the guards, should they intervene.

I think this covers most of the difficulties that arise with most tavern brawls and could let the game have it's cake and eat it to. Imagine if Brado's actually had the fist fights that it's said to have according to settings.
What do you think? Are there other concerns you have about it that I didn't address?
-
By settings brados should be filled with drunken brawls, barflys, and other colorful people. But as it stands, it's mostly empty. It's more sedate than Kada-El's and that's not right. ;)
So, if you have a character given to carousing or at least starting things, please take time to provide the needed color at Brados. The settings will appreciate it if you do. And if you don't have such a character please consider making one.
Remember everybody, this is the tavern where it is ok to throw a punch. ;)
From another post of yours.... I've always had this in the back of my mind and told other outlaws nah lets go drink at Brado's so we can start some trouble! ;D

Good grief, three years ago. ;D But yeah, Brados was supposed to be the shady tavern and that never really got off the ground. Even the den never seemed to pick up that environment. I suspect the playercount has just been too low. You need enough players player to where you have enough shady characters available at the same time.
Camp Banished is another such place, but being open PVP seemed to scare people off. That's a shame considering how often people used to ask for open PvP areas. Speaking of open PvP, did they move the plat mine again? ::|

Atop a hill, now. Look around or ask in game, you lazy old hag. Miss me a nice tavern brawl, back when Mishka used to rip ears off. Got her stomach open with an axe wound after doing that to Stashka.

Most of my characters don't brawl at all you Avacado you. :P

Necromancy comes in many forms. Be careful what you summon. lol
-
Riggy, at this point, even bad RP would be a step up from next to no RP. In other games, I've seen hives of widely agreed upon bad RP with more attempts at RPing going on. Besides, most RP crinkles can actually be ironed out with people willing to improve. Most of the people with no patience aren't likely to hang around the game as it is now.

...and you're just jealous because i'm better at it than you are. :P

lol. Sounds familiar.
I'm no longer interested in playing and don't have the time either, but if I was, I would just start something and run with it. If you are really yearning to rebuild the community, then start up a game and advertise it outside of this forum - ie. Pinterest, Facebook, or some gaming sites. The game needs new blood and you won't find that in this web forum.
Perhaps advertise your game at the site you play on and see if there are any players who are tired of star trek or star wars (or whatever) and are interested in a change.
-
You mean start up an RP?
-
Yeah. I assume that's why you have started making all these posts about RP. Are you looking to start up a game or something?
-
Oh, I'm just helping to revive the forum so that the people who do still try to make the game work stand a chance. The forum looking completely dead will run off a lot of new players. If anything I just do this out of nostalgia for the PS that once was. It started out small and turn into something pretty impressive. There is a chance it could do so again.
Also, I'm fighting my way to the top.

I just bumped Suno out of top 10 posters, and I'm about to tie Xillix's spot in topic starters... I will probably pass him by tomorrow. :P
-
So i see. The net net is, you've wasted far too much time here. ;D
-
You can't talk, you've only been hanging around here 72 hours less than I have. :P
-
It might actually be a bit longer if you add in my original forum account ("Rigwyn") which i deleted a number of years ago. That one had quite a few posts and some time on it too.
-
And factor in that I started using this forum before you, I've spent comparatively less time here overall. :P

My thoughts, everything sounds reasonable aside from point four.
Brawlers will also take care to check OOCly with surrounding/nearby RPers to make sure that their fight won't completely destroy someone else's RP.
Assuming all the other points are adhered to, this one seems to rip things too far OOC to me... destroying other patrons conversations, poems, converstations, first dates, etc is exactly what brawls do and I would expect that to piss off any characters affected by it.
I concur with the Brado remarks as being the place for a rough crowd.. but Kada's doesn't appear immune to the occasional... or somewhat frequent drunken interruptions... especially a "tavern" that has rooms for rent upstairs...
I think if characters hang at taverns and bars... they are willingly entering the environment of alcohol and fist fights... if they want high-brow environments for fancy cocktails and dinner with entertainment... they need to go somewhere that doesn't have "bar" or "tavern" in the name...
Perhaps the Red Crystal Den... 'cept that please reek's of a mafia-esque environment to me... so somebody could get wacked there, but prop taken outback first while folks smoke their cigars and listen to some more jazz tunes.

Well, one, a tavern or bar is not inherently given to coarse behavior. This is how you get upscale bars. Two, Kada's is the most central tavern due to everyone spawning in Hydlaa now. It would make sense for that that one have fewer disruptions so that people can get used to congregating again. I know people like to have an audience for their fights, but if the audience is run off by a lack of consideration that's peeing where one sleeps. The RP fights used to be bad though. People were trying to kill each other there constantly and that was rudely disruptive.
However, to shift focus slightly, I think RPers get a little too caught up in their own story sometimes. This is not about you in particular Thoss, but I think I need to put this out here now. If expectations of spontaneity get so restrictive that courtesy checks are somehow too much to ask, then something is very wrong. I wish I could light that last bit up and set it on fire to make sure you all see it.
Other people might be in the middle of working out an unexpected but important part of their character's story when someone has the idea to toss the whole tavern in an uproar. It's one thing if it's just a localized spat, but it's a different matter if one effectively godmods others into being indirectly involved.
If a would be brawler blows up someone else's RP then tosses out, "Well, this is a tavern so you should have expected something." It will not only be disruptive but it sounds amazingly rude and deliberately inconsiderate. Rude behaviors, a lack of respect, and a lack of courtesy already killed the community once. We don't need to test if it can do it again.
In the past, expecting people to go along with unspoken rules that no one could even agree on fell immensely flat. However, I've seen much healthier RP communities elswhere include a wider variety of styles than would be considered acceptable by PS standards. You know how they managed it? The healthy sections of it went out of their way to respect each other and check OOCly to make sure they weren't pushing each other around or stepping on toes needlessly. That's not to say it was perfect, and at times toes were stepped on anyway, but they weathered upheavals much better than PS' RP community did.
In PS' future, I think it would be better to focus on courtesy than having one's RP style way. People might keep more respect for each other and hatred between groups might be kept at a minimum. That may lead to fewer community rending RP style wars and not having every side of the fight leave in disgust at once like last time.
Look at the player count... PS doesn't have the luxury of not being accommodating anymore.
