Depends on what you mean by heavily enforcing

I... but lapses would be tollerated. I know my self how hard it is to keep in character.

is it jsut me or is that EQ players name visable in your sig... Pokiemonster.... i mean, there is first hand evidence of why names should be regulated in an RPG...

1)telling bigfoot to shutup, not a good idea

2)I really hate all the rpg crap, if it becomes heavily enforced i\'ll simply put ooc in front of everything i say... I just reallly don\'t like i\'d rather play the game how i want to...

dumb woob, if u want a game wiht no rules, and none of this \"rpg $|-| 1 7, then go play anarchy online, if u want to have fun and play like its the year 1222, then play planeshift, i mean sure a joke or 2, but i swear, and mark my words, if u transform planeshift into runescape, then ur going to need more than to mine/smith the **** out of me:evil:

Amen. I think it should be enforced, within reason. As long as we\'re not talking about the movie we watched last week, we should be okay. Putting \"ooc\" in front of all your comments will most likely get you booted by the mods (and we won\'t shed a tear, either...).

Roleplaying should be enforced, to a certain degree, because people may get tired of playing their character all the time.
I will def. roleplay in the game, and I\'m sure many others will too. Heck, Kendaro is already roleplaying, and the demo isn\'t even out yet! :]  :P

The developers have always made it very clear that this game will be roleplay orientated and will take measures to stop people from taking this project away from it\'s setting. Why else would they be insisting on an appropriate names for characters?

he told me to shut up... and to lay off... ouch, i can shrug that off. After all I cant do nothing about it, and i wouldnt do anything about it sicne that would make me look like an ass. And as part of teh Dev team i have to act mature no matter what.

but anyway...

I wasnt telling you to alter your Sig... i just meant that the partial name visable in your sig was a prime example of what I hate in the current Online games player base... the players that name there characters \"Bigdaddy SnoopDog\" or \"Bigass Hunter\"...

And i dont see why id have to lay off since i havent been harrassing you, have i?... Im fine with the odd private chat or OOC conversation, but running around Yliakum talking about the football results, the new car you just bought or how it suxs that the stats on the Uber sword of death arent to your likeing just isnt exceptable... its like watching a good movie and realy getting into it and having the jerks next to you cellphone go off...

If you dont like roleplaying... as its been said before... why are you here?... this is after all will be an Online RPG. But if you wish to stay, your welcome.. and we look forward to seeing you in game.

I

The main reason im getting excited about this game is due to the roleplay enforce it .
Kick everyone that isnt roleplaying im here for the stories and adventure people that can put it down havent experieced it,

Killing people like dumb woob wont solve anything because they will never learn and it just takes away from us destroying the evil/good roleplayers in a roleplay that takes time to obtain.

Perhaps it would be best if people were kicked for being ooc for a time period or placed in a jail or something.  They might get out if they behaved. Also there could be mentors that could give, part of thier time to showing new arrivals the arts of roleplaying.
Perhaps there should be a longer character creation. That could go back into backgrounds, of the persona making it easier for those less experienced to know what there doing.

By doing this you get people more interested. In there characters well being. There less likely to be ooc as it will either kick them or take time out from there adventuring.

:D  :D  :D  :D  :D Well dumb woob maybe if you ask the mods  they may make you a race of dumb woobs and not some (dumb dwarfs) was it.
Now whats wrong with a little roll play i\'m not saying we should go all out on it as it would be hard to keep in char. Now whats better you walk in to a smoke filled bar and as you walk up to the bar keeper he says\"hail  to you my good sir a fine day for a drink is it not\"in which you could reply \"aye can i have some woodbark ale \"
no whats wrong with that or would you a little rollplay wouldnt kill you.
Or would you rather have this barkeeper say\"hail to you my good sir a fine day for a drink is it not \" in which you say \"yeah mate give  me a f****** drink\" and then say\"buyin a dragon sword press 555 to sell....ah u noob  and so on.....I\'m not saying all out rollplay is a good thing but the idea of a game is to become the roll you play  be it a fantasy  game  or scfi.
well thats my 2 gold pieces.

\"Ay\" i beleive that  ro\'ing should be enforced to the point that \"ooc\" is allowed only in whispers. i am a dungeon master myself so i know how hard it would be to keep players in character but hey the dream of a rpg where everyone greeted you by \"hail\" or \"good\'ay\" is just as possible as the perfect government

It\'s not going to be possible to have PS as an actual rping game.  As much as I would love to see that, there will always be those people who find pleasure in the endless killing of monsters.  Personally I don\'t see how that can be fun at all.  As far as I\'m concerned let those who don\'t want to rp do their thing.  Perhaps put the chat in different channels (If you have already sorry, can\'t get the game working on my comp.)  So those who are rping can use a channel and can turn the ooc one off.  That way we can ignore them and they can ignore us.  Anyway...yeah.

Man...I think I just used up my months worth of posting in this one...

I\'d love to see _some_ roleplay enforcing. As an example, Mr. 1337h4xpwNZj00 creates his character, with that name, and lands on the Hydlaa Plaza. There, he meets Mr. I-B-GM (who is fake, of course), and they both happen to meet a real one, which kicks them both out for being None-RP people (Just look at their names, would you?). But it would be impossible to prevent people from being ooc, and it would be rediculous (sp.?) to kick/jail people for being ooc. That, IMHO, would be enforcing it too much. Although, forcing people to, at least, make up their own name, and speak properly... That would be nice. Something which isn\'t seen in alot of MMORPG\'s nowaday... :)

Just tell me if I\'m not making any sense at all.
Title:
Post by: AendarCallenlasse on April 23, 2003, 11:27:42 pm
I understand what you mean but making someone change their name won\'t make them rp.  They will still be able to rant and chat about the big sports game on TV.
Title:
Post by: Kiva on April 23, 2003, 11:49:18 pm
That is - if you ask me - allright, as long as it is kept off of shouts... But if they start shouting out useless stuff like \"Oh I bought a FSGSGSDg thing today from the shop and then gDFGLJDG from the school came and we went DSJLFSDF in the mall etc.\"  ... That\'s not good. :D
Title:
Post by: explorer on April 23, 2003, 11:57:55 pm
Why not just make another chat channel? One rpg channel (the one that interacts with the world), and a off topic chat channel? That way if you wanted a review from something, you could just switch over and ask, then go back to rpging.

Ignore buttons...they work a treat *nods*

Oddly enough, RPG doesn\'t seem to mean roleplay anymore.  Either people just don\'t want to take the time or they\'re so terrible at it that it would probably be better if they stuck to d00d-speak.  However, I have noticed over a wide spread of games that \"old school\" is really being sought out.  The rpers of \"back-in-the-day\" are really looking to find a game they can totally immerse themselves into.

I\'m all for seperate channels, ic/ooc etc, but invariably someone somewhere is going to abuse it, for no other reason but because they know you can\'t reach through the screen and smack them.  People ALWAYS abuse shouts - which is why I often had shouts off in EQ as well as ooc.  Ah, sweet silence...that would be a good thing.

I HAVE seen games try and enforce rp; if you have a ridiculous name, for one - and how many different spellings of Aragorn does a game need?!  But then, everyone\'s idea of rp is different.  There are other games that enforce rp solely by the way they\'re created; taking so much detail upon history and ecosystem and all other details of the world that you honestly CAN\'T just go in killing things for the sake of killing them without getting yourself into a huge hole.

All I know is there are a LOT of roleplayers out there looking for a game to call home; if you can work rp into a game in such a way that it is actually PART of the game and not just something a rper has to invent, then said game will have a massive following.

could they have a strict roleplay server, and a loose one, if people abuse ooc in the strict one they get booted. , then again eq tried this but they cannot \"enforce\" it on frioana vie b/c they\'d loose business

Both EQ and DAOC have roleplay strict servers for the people who want them.  Both have less than 2% of their players on those RP servers.

I would love to see RP in PS (and personally I hate the d00d talk)
If you want to talk about school, football, the party last night etc. You could as well do it in MIRC, or whisper.
I have been roleplaying on NWN for some time now, and seriously, it really gives the game athmosphere.
I don\'t want another Runescape >=(

This is because neither of those games was created with the roleplayer in mind.  EQ is not a roleplay-friendly game; a game that is mostly centred around camping/looting does NOT encourage a rp environment.  Also, most people on the rp servers don\'t actually rp - it\'s just \"too hard\" for most people.  Not to mention that the rp servers were created long AFTER rp guilds had managed to establish themselves in other places (the roleplay guild I belonged to had been in existence since Beta)

There\'s a rp-ezboard for EQ that is populated by quite a few guilds and the like spread across all of EQ.  With the addition of more zones designed for even more camping/powergaming/looting, they\'re getting fed up, and they\'re looking for other games.

I, for one, am completely gung-ho about making a game highly roleplay-enforced. I\'m a big fan of message-board based RPG\'s (if you want a good one with lots of dedicated members join Neara (http://www.avidgamers.com/neara)) and the prospect of an actual roleplay-oriented game is more than enticing to me. I mean, think about this: in a strict text-based RP, you not only have to create a character, you have to conjure up with words an entire setting for your character, and be able to create other characters for you and a friend (or two) to interact with. In a strict RP video game, all you have to do is press some buttons to move your character and speak. If that\'s all it takes, what\'s so darn hard about keeping the talk centered around, \"Have you heard rumors that the Octarch of the Third Level has been corrupted?\" and \"Someone said yesterday that they saw the almighty Talad, with their own eyes!\" and \"My fur trade business is going under; it doesn\'t seem like there are quite so many creatures in the Near portions of the Labyrinth.\" I think all we truly need to enforce roleplaying like this is an OOC channel (you can switch back and forth between OOC and IC), an ignore button (for those who just don\'t seem to get it), and a GM or two booting characters with names like Dumb Woob or EvilCartman.
Title:
Post by: Mehallie on April 25, 2003, 01:11:37 am
The best way to enforce rp?  Keep rping.

No, really.  I\'ve done this one in EQ before.  When I wasn\'t with my rp guild, I was with a really cantankerous dwarven friend.  Our characters were a trip together; we\'d get groups because people just wanted to sit and listen to us hassle each other.

Blatantly rping at people does one of two things; one, it gets rid of people who just want to kill things and talk in d00dspeak so you don\'t have to be bothered with grouping with them.  Secondly (and probably more important) people who may have rped in the past, or who are interested in rp get inspired to have a go.  I can\'t even count how many times my character was given very passable gear just because the person we were grouped with was so happy to meet fellow rpers.  (this works a treat as well when you actually spell words out properly.  Just by announcing that I would spell \"please\" and \"thank you\" without z\'s and all it\'s proper vowels and consonants often earned my level 25 character lvl 60+ buffs solely because of courtesy.

The rp community may be a small one, but it is a loyal, dedicated, and steady one.

Title:

Sounds like we got a solution then. The \"ignore\" finction will become popular =P
Title:
Post by: Mehallie on April 25, 2003, 10:03:28 pm
It works a treat; rp to your heart\'s content and fellow rpers will find you, I assure you.  It\'s also helpful to keep track of which guilds also rp so, in the case where a major raid or quest needs doing and a guild doesn\'t quite have enough people, the rpers can band together and rp AND get the job done at the same time; it\'s more fun doing those sorts of things with fellow rpers anyway

P.S Looked at the link there, Valfaran (hope I spelled your name right *blush*, and I\'m impressed.  I\'ll give it a go!

Hmm, what about a \"d00d ranking\"? We see people being \"kewl d00ds\", and we type in a thing, ex.  /rank jimbo 5. That would be a rank 1-5, and when jimbo reaches a d00d level of 10, he\'s squelched by everybody automaticly. That squelch would last untill he\'s asked a dev to take it off, or something similar.
Title:
Post by: Mehallie on April 25, 2003, 10:45:03 pm
lol!  I wish, but that\'s getting a bit elitist, and Lady knows it would end up getting abused at some point or another, which would make it utterly null.

However, in various guilds we did have what was known as The List (yes, caps for a reason) where we put obvious griefers, problem players, rip-off merchants and the like for future reference of other players, though everything had to be legitimate and followed up with observation to be \"confirmed\" so it wasn\'t just a personality clash thing that was blown into a revenge blacklisting.  But that\'s a practice that is pretty wise for anyone, rper or no.

This is similar to \"hate points\" discussed here (http://www.planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=2421&boardid=11&styleid=2).  Of course, this only works (for RPing) if the RPers use the system more than the d00ds.

Post by: AendarCallenlasse on April 29, 2003, 02:34:12 am
Well I do not think it will be possible to do it in PS because the game is not level based but on a MUD I play it is possible to gain EXP and level up by roleplaying.  Players would be allowed to issue out a certain amout of rpaward points to other players they thought were exceptional rpers.  That way those who rp will gain levels faster.  An added bonus.
Title:
Post by: Mehallie on April 29, 2003, 03:10:54 pm
Interesting thought, mate.  Never heard that one before.

Too bad I am total pants at MUD\'s; give me visuals!!!!

I don\'t think there is really any way to encourage rping other than just rp yourself as much as you can and encourage by example, but I\'ve already said that :P

P.S. Velfaran, I am at Neara now but I admit I\'m not seeing much rp yet.  Oh, and I\'m still interested in your guild - would like to see some updates on your page when you have a moment to spare.

hmm now here is the problem, even though there are those who really like the role playing aspect of online games, you really cant enforce that as the only standard online. the developers of games like these allow freedom of choice in the fact that you can pretend that you are inside that world, living and breathing your livelyhood from the earthen soil. Or that you\'re Joe Shmoe just in from the real world kickin some @$$. To enfore one or another would loose fan base (or revenue if it was a pay for sight)
perhaps someone should suggest a system to mark roleplayers out from the crowd (ie specifically colored name or symbols to show who is in fact portraying a character) That way everyone can have fun :D

btw, avid RP here 8)

(oh...and who ever said that AO was just hack and slash, maybe you should go play it:evil: *annoyed look on her face* we are more than just anarchist there buddy. there has been a HUGE rp movement since YOU last visited, if at all)
Title:
Post by: AendarCallenlasse on April 30, 2003, 09:08:03 am
Actually the devs can  enforce only rp and by looking at the fan base so far, most here want to rp.  And since there will be no paying whatsoever they will not be losing money.
Title:
Post by: Ravenmaster on April 30, 2003, 10:08:20 am
Arg. I agree with, well most stuff here. I whole-heartedly support rping in an rpg...
OOC/IC chat would be useful. If you just want to talk IC, you stay IC, and the same for OOC.  Also, if you could change the way your name looks, and have a designated color for rpers, that would be good.  Kicking people out for not rping is kinda harsh though. Just let them go there merry little (albeit a bit bland) way, while the rpers go theirs.

Somehow I disagree with immensing yourself into the position of your character. Maybe EQ caused that, but I would not have any problem saying things like:

\"Hello fellow Kran warrior, what brings you to these parts?\"

\"I\'m exploring to find the vale of nine trees. It\'s supposed to have lots of herbs so I can make lots of potions and go out killing stuff.\"

\"Ah, mind if I tag along? Someone mentioned a dragora killed them near here, and I\'d like to try my lance at it.\"

\"Ah...sure....but if the dragora comes after us you\'re on your own.\"

etc, etc.

Tolkien invented many Mannish tongues but his books were written in English. Obviously everyone in the book did not speak English because there was no England in the timeline. English and Old English simply represented Westron Common and its older varietites.

A prime example that comes to mind is the word \"hobbit\" descended from OE holbytla.
Actually the word was kuduk, from old kud-d?kan.

So, you see, a bit of modernization that is simply representative of old conversation is fine. As long as it is on the same topic arguing what words the old guys would have used is a little pointless :)

Edit: To be true to my history, Seregon would only speak Sindarin and Ilkorin, only speaking Westron with a thick accent, but I\'m not getting that hardcore till CB. Then I\'ll show y\'all my l33t ub3r rp skilz. :D
I heniel s? pennin sindarin pain l??

as a longtime pen and paper rp player,of course i love rp.
i tried quiet a few mmorpgs, some for quiet a while, but with only a handful of people rp?ing,in the end i lost interest.if i only want to kill monsters, lvl up and chat i play diablo2.hell,with d2 i can even make money over ebay^^
now all my hopes are with ps.
i really hope there will be a big rp community ingame.
you will always have ooc,but mainly it should be rp.
although for me it is hard for i am not a native english speaker and cant express myself in that language as good as i would like too, i will try.
please, for the sake of a great game just coming up,at least try to rp.you will see its fun.
