Title: Server Stress testing session announced
Post by: boonet on June 30, 2003, 09:46:44 am
We decided to start stress-testing our actual game server (planeshift.fragnetics.com), in order to study how its performance scales as the number of players is growing.

To accomplish this goal, we need your help!

We basically decided to have a preferred day hour when we will all try to meet ingame. This hour is:

9    pm GMT  (England)
10  pm CET  (Western Europe)
3    pm CDT (Texas, St. Louis, Chicago)
1    pm PDT (California, Seattle)

The duration of this stress session will be 1 hour, starting from the aforementioned day times. All you will need to do will be to connect to Molecular Blue and walk, chat, collect crystals, etc...

Let\'s try to see how many of us can get there at the same time!

I\'ll be there. Maybe it is an idea to give the people who come a little prize, so that more people will try to come.
As a prize maybe not like 8000 rubies or so (wouldn\'t mind if it it were), but just a little something...

I\'ll see ya guys there then

hehe, man niber, time has meaning in summer if you\'re parents are as anal as mine were. I used to count down the hours till I had to go back to school, and being in bed by 8 seemed way too damn early for me

Just to say a large number of us around 10 gmt suffered bad, most had dropped by time i gave up too, i counted 8 people who were complaining but there were 11 of us in the tavern at the time. :/ ah well...

Oh what was the max no. of ppl we reached?

Thanks to everyone for a successful first day of testing!

We maxed out at 48 people online concurrently, and had at least 35-40 for more than an hour.

People did report render lag problems when they were all gathered up in the tavern, etc. but overall the server seemed to handle it fine.

Let\'s see if we can beat 48 tomorrow!  :-)

Just to show something to the ones who couldn\'t make it in time for our first stress testing session, here are 2 screenshots of how the things were looking:

Thank you to all the ones who were present: we\'re looking forward to meet you again the next days at the same time, to see if we can really bring up the max concurrent players count.

Well the crystal hunt still goes on and there are the weapons to collect and the quests to perform. So there is some stuff to do now :-)

Everyone complains about lag on PS, but what they\'re talking about is just slowdown to the graphics load that they\'re having to process. For me, though, for some reason standing near the tavern for more than 5 minutes slows everything right down to the point where I have to close the game and re-open it. I\'ll try to be there for the stress test.

I unfortunately missed the stress test yesterday :( I\'ll be there to try and beat those measly numbers today though ;) (as long as that \'could not create player entity\' thing is fixed by that time).

I posted the news on my forum so I hope more of us will make it ;)

In yesterday\'s test (the 2nd one) we hit 59 connected people and it seemed to go fine.  A couple people reported that they \"froze\" if they stayed near the tavern a few minutes.  Did anyone else experience this?

The first day of testing I\'d got stuck at the tavern, psclient terminated itself after a few minutes with no explanation. Couldn\'t connect again.
So yesterday I started at the same spot. Took almost 5 minutes to connect (usually about 20 seconds). And yes, I was stuck again for as long as it took me to type /spawn. Even the chatbox responded slowly.
After some running around I got stuck again near the spawn point at the plaza. And one more time, a while after that it froze again when I was out of town, behind the high walls. Only a very few polygons and no players around, so I doubt it was my hardware. FPS dropped to 0.02, but traffic monitor flashed like crazy, so there still was some communication between me and the server. And I\'m sure it was psclient.
BTW: Athlon 1.33GHz, 512MB DDR, 32MB ATI Radeon, connected through LAN, 192/256 with firewall Zonealarm.
I run Planeshift in the window mode, 1024x768, 16-bit.
Any other application (dictionary, browser...) runs smoothly, even at the moment when Planeshift freezes.

I have complained enough for the moment. :)
Good luck.

i acutally noticed more lag as the amount of ppl went down, weird
Title:
Post by: Wolfmane on July 03, 2003, 11:59:22 pm
I\'ve experienced the same lag problems, frequently to the point of the game giving a run error message and closing down. Missed the Stress test but if it continues on 04/07 I\'ll be there.

Post by: Xalthar on July 04, 2003, 12:29:33 am
at the first stress test i froze when boonet led us to the tavern... second time I didn\'t...
Title:
Post by: boonet on July 04, 2003, 01:31:05 am
Yes, the stresstest will be held on 4/07 as well. Come on, let\'s try to pass the 59 players limit ;-)

When us working folks are trying to make it for the stress test it would helpful to be on Saturday or Sunday.  Otherwise we can\'t make it.  Unless your work at one of those bizarre shifts.

Thats 7am for us Australians I believe (NSW time can\'t help you if your from WA) so make sure you slackers are out of bed in time and no drinking the night before unless of course Origins on then i guess it can\'t be helped because drinking at night will casue hangovers in the morning which may make it hard for you to log on or find the computer for that matter :P

Oh yeh sorry couldn;t be on for the other one or ones i\'m not usually aloud to go on at 7am but I\'ll sneak on for this

You guys are complaining about times like.. 10? My god. And that one dude has to sleep at 8!!! Do your guys\' parents have you by a leash or something? My general hours are to stay awake days and sleep when fatigue claims me. 8? I havne\'t had a bedtime since.. like.. 4th grade. I pity you guys.

BTW- Someone please e-mail me a server or password that will log me on, I can\'t seem to log on Via \"localhost\" with Password \"guest\". That or, tell me if there is a registration I must go through, or if there are specific hours I can or can\'t get on. Thanks

Title: GMT != UK ?
Post by: dimaq on July 14, 2003, 10:43:00 am
Hi, is it only me, or GMT is really not the same as UK time during the summer? (as in due to DST? at least time is quoted differentely on bcc.co.uk)

still that\'s quite late into the night for someone who\'s only ever accessed from work :-))

/* still tries to figure out what\'s it in his TZ */
Title:
Post by: Xalthar on July 15, 2003, 12:40:39 pm
Greenwich, England has been the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) since 1884.  GMT is sometimes called Greenwich Meridian Time because it is measured from the Greenwich Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory  in Greenwich.  Remember: Clocks Spring Forward & Fall Back (Fall = Autumn)  but GMT remains the same all year around.
10:40:29 is the time in gmt when this was posted ;)

somehow I really didn\'t think the stress thingy was announce when it was still \'winter time\'. I suppose stress testing still goes on every day at that hour, right?
Title:
Post by: Xalthar on July 16, 2003, 06:33:33 pm
yeah, it says that every day at the same hour, being 22:00 CET to 23:00 CET it will be testing and measuring...

why dont we set a day as well as a time for one big stress test?  (not saying to forget the smaller ones of course)

I\'ll vote for that idea Drilixer.

Xaltar are you on holiday or around?
