Title: Fishing
Post by: Kuiper7986 on July 01, 2003, 08:12:55 am
Well in most MMORPGs of this style, there is a job called fishing and it is pretty important job.

Here\'s my proposal it will seperated in  different parts

How do you get started:

Well first off I think first you need a fishing rod or something to fish with. To catch fish you need something to catch it with.

Locations on where to fish:
I think fishing should be done in where a water source is present with the exception of fountains or pools.         Oceans I think are good because they provide a lot of areas to fish plus there would be more fish type readily available in the area.

Lakes would be fine because they are located on land and they\'re close to where there is a population source. Streams would be nice because it will eventually lead to a lake meaning that you could fish the fish you want without going to lake, if you can avoid it.

Beaches and coastal areas would make nice locations because you can enjoy the scenery and you have a better chance of catching crustaceans.

Chnces of catching that type of fish:

In roonskApE you could only catch fish the level your on. Well that rule sucks. I think anyone should be able to catch any fish, but depending on your experience of fishing. Like lets say fish(a) is very common anf fish(b) is rare. I think a beginning fisherman should be able to catch both but the catch is catching fish(a) probablity is 1:5 but catching fish(b) probability is 1:9000 That\'s kind what I was aiming for. I think this rule is fair.

Experience Gaining: I don\'t know what kind of experience system is going to be implemented for skills but I don\'t think the type of fish you catch should determine how much exp you get. I think the technique in which you catch the fish should be the determining factor. What I means is like fish is fish. You catch it, so whether you catch this fish or that fish, your
going to eventually catch it, it shouldn\'t matter. But it does matter like how you fish. A fisherman really gains his experience by how good his technique is and how much fish he can catch.

Fishing Equipment:
Fishing equipment I believe should be either bought, made or found. I think there should be different types of each type of equipment. Like for example:

Bows:
Wooden Bow
Fishermans Bow
Great Bow blah blah

This should game same with all equipment. The different type of equipment there should be for catching fish is:

Nets
Rods
Harpoons
Fishing rods
Cages

Bait for catching fish:
Bait should play an important role in the probability to catch a fish. Crappy bait like a piece of grass would be cheap but plentiful, nonetheless you won\'t catch hardly any fish at all with that. Then a feather would be more expensive, you have a better chance of catching fish. Then maybe you could use fresh meat from a monster you just killed that would be the best since the fish can sense it the best. I also think a Musician could learn a song(s) to pillage fish so it\'ll be easier to everyone to catch.

Fishing Boats:
There should be private fishing boats made by players themselves or commercial boats already in the game. Private Boats would be small but its well more private dUh! You can control where it goes and bring a few friends. Commercial boats I imagine would be as big as a pretty large sized yacht. On this yacht there would be a small bait and fishing equipment store. The thing is you can\'t control where it goes and you can\'t control who goes on or who goes off.

Types of Fish:
I assume there would be different types of fish. In honest to goodness truth I think real fish should be used. I mean its just easier for everyone to know what they are. The different types of fish and sea animals i propose are:

Fish you catch in the ocean:
Seaweed (very common item, when you don\'t reel in
any fish)
Tuna
Red Snapper
Rock Cod
Shark
Octopus
Squid
Shrimp
Lobster
Crab
Oysters
Secret Treasure Chests or rare goodies!

Fishes you can find in the Lakes or Rivers:
Salmon
Trout
Carp
Catfish
Bass
Pirahnas! *Dangerous*
Frogs (near the shallow part of the lake)

Selling Fish/Fish Markets:
Well some people dont\' cook fish so obviously should be able to sell fish. Fish should sell to the market at 15% of face value against 1 tria.

THanks for listening...

i like your ideas on fishing, fish of course could be used for many things not just food, like swordfish could be used for cheap swords or things like that...

I don\'t like the idea of a low lvl fisher being able to catch anything a high lvl can, I mean, some fishermen go after whales and mako sharks, but if a newbie wanted one of those, they\'d get eaten

well that considering fish are considered monsters, which I\'m not sure about, but if it isn\'t fair then just keep lowering the probability to compensate for easy catches.

Heh, I like the \"newbie getting eaten\" thought... I can imagine it even now :P

as to fishing, I think there should be a balancing lvl kept border, so you couldn\'t just catch anything being low lvl... You would have to build your skills and advance in lvl to be able to catch bigger fish...

it\'s not considering fish are monsters, it\'s a fact.
if a new fisherman were to go out to sea, with his little cane pole hangin off the back of a boat, lookin to catch himself a shark, the shark would pull him in, and have dinner.

I do think that to catch harder fish, you should have at least some skill, to catch a 6 foot catfish, you have to know what you\'re doing, no one is gonna catch one on pure luck. more likely, even skilled fishermen would be takin a swim, due to size and weight differences. I know a little about what I\'m talking about here, my grandaddy was a fisher, he\'d eat catfish every day if he was allowed to. one time we caught a four foot catfish out on the mississippi. it bit my line, but there was no way I could pull it in. I was 6\' at the time, (only thirteen though and not that strong) and nearly got dragged in myself, grandad had to pull it in. he had been at it for nearly 70 years though. so he knew what he was doing.

Then why would anyone fish, if we\'d just fall overboard or be eaten all the time?

I agree with you both.  :)

tygerwilde if the player were of sufficient strength, size, and speed and had all the correct equipement - even an inexperienced fisherman would land a shark maybe 1:9000 times.

but how does an inexperienced fisherman know how to pull the line hard enough that the fish doesn\'t get away, without pulling so hard that the line or pole snaps from the pressure. how does he know not to put so much pressure behind the hook that it tears through the skin and come unhooked, how does he even know where to find the fish he\'s looking for... it\'s just not feasible, it\'s not just a matter of strength or speed, it\'s a matter of finesse, you have to know what you\'re doing to catch fish, really even small ones, I remember when I was young, I couldn\'t personally catch anything but small lake pirch, now that I\'ve got more experience, I can catch somwhat larger fish...

of course, now that I think of it...

by the time you\'ve caught that 9000 fish, you\'ve got some experience... unless you\'re talking about 9000 casts, which really teaches you nothing about catching fish....
the only way I\'ve ever thought that fishing was at all realistic was to include an actual fishing simulator, actually make it require some player skill to catch the fish... and stagger certain things so that a higher skill actually makes it easier to reel in the larger fish, like increase the margin for player error. you know?

only problem again. would be lag...

lag screws up a lot of idealistic features doesn\'t it?

With the right equipment a newbie has a decent chance to catch anyting. Like fishing with dynamite and electrocuting fish. Those methods are barbaric but nothing escapes.

heh, but that wouldn\'t use fishing skill, that would use tossing dynamite into water skill, fishing involves a pole, and no, there is no such thing as a super pole, one is just about as good as the next, if you ask any true fisherman.

Fishing is about catching fish. It doesn\'t matter how you do it. My examples are on not to do list, but I wanted to say that it\'s not all in the fishing skill to catch the big ones.

sorry bout starting a new topic on this (failed to use the search)... but I\'ll just say what I said there.

We don\'t want fishing to become roon-like (click click click click) right? If anyone\'s played Zelda Ocaraina of Time, there is a fishing mini-game. I think that sort of thing would work great in Planeshift. You\'d actually have to cast, lure, and reel this fish in. Tygerwilde mentioned this too. Maybe with higher skill levels you could manuver your lure under reeds and such. Also strength and dexterity would help your casting length/accuracy.

Fishing with a bow and an arrow on a string might be  fun too... not just fishing rods. That would be for \"ranging\" people, not fishermen though.

you guys... this isn\'t \'Bass Fisher Pro 3D\' or some other happy happy joy joy fishing game...

favorite quote by Vengeance on things like this:

\"A great idea... but not Planeshift\"

I\'d say fishing is A LOT PlaneShift - especially since there is an entire race that is specialized in fishing and farming underwater. Even after that there are other races that have fishing related bonuses described in their bios... Even if it wasn\'t that way though, fishing is a typical MMORPG minigame - and I know PS is supposed to be different, but this isn\'t a matter of being different, this is a matter of making par IMHO :)

Hmm... Fishing minigames? That reminds me of Oregon Trail II or III, can\'t remember which, but they had this kind of \'thing.\' However, I do have a few points to make.

One: Like SnowWolf said, there is an underwater race. Klyros can breathe underwater as well. And the bottom two levels of Yliakum (I never spell that right) is submerged in water, if I remember correctly. So, this leads to point 2...

Catching fish with your hands. If you can go underwater, then go, and catch some fish with your hands. However, as it is a city, there may be cattle-like farms underwater, except instead of cattle, there are fish. So to find fish that you can actualy \'get\' for free, this leads to point three...

Catching fish underwater, underground. This is, after all, a large cavern, so underground streamds, rivers, and perhaps oceans could be there, but the creatures are underwater as well, so they probably have night vision or no vision and a keen sense of smell. Anyway, what I\'m trying to say is...

Is that I like the idea of fishing, and am suggesting that you can catch fish with you rhands. Also, this is underground, so we\'ll have to make creatures the type who live underground and in water.

Since fish seems to be the mainstay of the inhabitants of Yliakum the question comes up as to their mercury levels. You know, eating a lot of preditory fish and all. How do I contact the Yliakum Health Dept.?
