I\'ve played just a few days this game, but fell like I\'m going to be around here a while.
I also study math in so thought that start a mathematician guild would be a good idea, because there isn\'t a RPG with this kind of guild.
Also, sorry for the syntaxes, the English isn\'t my mother language.
-
hum ok but... What is a mathematician Guild for ?
-
Whatever it is, I am joining, as soon as you get some form of a site up, or something where I can get my name into.
P.S. I am being dead serious. Sign me up. :D
-
Why would you do that, Alucard? Does your evil conscience like math or do you want to badly join a guild?
-
He is the founder of hellsing, (and math being the second most evil power in the universe) :P why shouldn\'t he?? :D :P
-
Good luck with the guild. :)
-
Everybody was Kung fu fighting! *gets into the jig*
...Oh yeah. They were doing math too. Have fun with that scholarly guild.
-
Noo! Go away! No more algebra! GAH!
*Starts shooting randomly, killing huginn and a few bystanders*
Seriously though, good luck with ur guild. I hope you find lots of other crazy ppl who like math. :P
(As for me, I won\'t be joining)
[Edit: Yeehaw! I lost that cool newbie title!]
note:Monketh is not in anyway affiliated with the southern half of the union, he just felt like saying that
-
I\'ll be with you soon, Monketh!
I thought we got out of school so we could get a break from math.
-
Math is EVIL! so it has been decreed...
-
You are all fools who are not worthy of my presence, cept maybe for my non-biological, non-related son Cyo, the rest, FOOLS. Math will be the unmaking of us all, Kiern knows this, tell them.
-
Math will be the unmaking of us all
**falls on side**
see, look what it has done...the math
-
Yes, math has done too much for the world... Not that that\'s a bad thing, it\'s actually a good thing. Things like the Pyramids of Egypt were constructed with the aid of mathematics. Without math, ther will be no pyramids. Actually, we would be primitives without these nifty things I am typing on right now that we call computers. Basically. Math is great. And anyway, look at all the jobs that require math. Maybe all the jobs in Planeshift require math.
Mwahahahaha...
Why not?
I feel like joining, but Emperor Kiern of teh BISM may call me traitor if I do... And have me put up before an execution squad... Or simply collect extra taxes from me, or demand this and that, I\'m not sure.
All hail math.
All hail everybody who stands up for it, mainly Huginn the crow and TheGeneral.
Now to figure out what use mathematics will have in the game...
-
Right on! :D
I don\'t think Kiern would mind, since I\'ve been with BISM for a while, and was able to run a half decent guild at the same time.
And the whole thing about being a traitor, you are only one if you don\'t join the Math Rules Guild.
What\'s the first order of buisness Huginn the crow, can we kill the traitors? :D
-
I love math - of course it\'s not that hard to like something that your good at... but the looks on the girls\', in my classes, faces is just priceless when the board ets covered in calculus and they are struggling to write all down so that they can futilely memorize it...
*blissful sigh*

In words suitable to my character;
I no good maff, kwartz can kownt, kwartz smartestest kran in Yliakum, kwartz count now;
one, two, many, lots, lots and one, lots and two, lots and many, lots and many and one, lots and many and two, lots and many and many, lots and many and lots... den I lose count ... :D
hmm.. different for a guild, not like the others, it has that much going for it.
(note: pratchett plagarism)

Hey, man. Where\'d you go to school? My TEACHERS can\'t even count that high.
-
To Wormtail_: Maybe the math itself will not have a use in the game, but most of the ones that loves math know how to planify and to program, to get the max output of a character with the calculus functions. That probably will be useful.
As I said, I\'ll form the guild the next week (exams), but if someone is in a hurry and start it threr\'s no prob.
To Jedi: I study in the UNAM (Mexico\'s largest university),
and you?
-
I am currently enrolled in Medway Highschool. Yay! I am so scholarly.
-
Finaly I\'ve finish my exams, ;)
So, who want to be mamber of a math guild?
-
Sorry for the newbie question, but I will be gratefull if someone could say me how to send an Avatar.
-
I might want to join... The only problem being how much I actually know in mathematics.I know nothing about programming, but I would like to learn. I think I also know of a few other poeople I know of who also may want to join as well. Should I invite them?
What exactly do you mean by \'send an avatar?\' If I am answering your question correctly, only Devs may have avators. But that may not be what you meant, I\'m not too sure.
And good luck with the guild!and recieving good scores on your exam!
-
Let\'s do a very symple problem. If there are 5 students and 3 chairs, how many diferent ways of sitting the students are?
Send me the answer to my mail: \"ghost737@hotmail.com\"
Luck.

Hi,
Huggin this is a novel idea and I love novel ideas! Good to see someone from Mexico in on PS.
Hi, I\'m doing a comparative summary of all existing Guilds which we want to add to a PS-fansite linked to Bloodlines Guild.
Some ideas you might think on (and send to me once you have done so) :D
Kind of members (math freaks ok but ...) all races in PS, all types of characters i.e. mages/fighters/rogues etc?
Aims, is there an overall purpose or aim with Math guild? See for example Explorers Guild (http://www.psxg.tk), they explor the PS world as main aim making them close to Cartographers or at least able to assist the latter. Maybe the Math Guild could do something similar with math, maybe to be used in Magic?
Allignment, good, evil, neutral etc.
Lastly ally yourself with some existing guilds that come close to your aims etc. or at least are compatible.
E-mail me if there are more details or post here.
Good luck

I think you have to be a moderator or win a contest to have an avatar

haha, I\'ve been in Calculus too long... how about a fun optimization problem or something easy like that?
-
Is not that advanced, but here it\'s:
Only knowing how to calculate the volume of a cilinder(heigth * circle area); deduce the formule of the volume of a cone.
Hint: First divide the cone in two, and calcule the volume with to cilinders; if you divide it indefinitly...
-
The name of the guild will be \"Dragon Hunters\" or something like that (there is a reason that I\'ll explain someday).
Kind of members: Personaly, almost allways play as a barbarian; but I suposse most of the members (if I can get enough to open it) will be mages (don\'t know why, but all my classmates that play role are mage lovers). Maybe I will be a kind of sorecerer with lighting reflexes.
Aims, is there an overall purpose or aim with Math guild? The ideal would be create a new kind of mage that uses math (like the FF Tactics one). That is unlikely, so probably we will be a kind of Arecane Brotherhood.
Allignment: We will follow a honor code, but not based in good or evil stuff; I\'ll be more like the gypsy honor code (the closest in RPG are the gypsy vampires in the Masquerade (i forgot the name)).
All guild that want\'s to be our ally will be accepted as a brother to us.
I\'m starting to doubt that then guys will be interested in the math guild, but thanks for the interest Wolfmane and keep the fingers crossed.

n root of (factorial n/n pow n), when n thends to infinity;
It\'s a triky one, but try it.

Hi Huggin...
Don\'t give up that easily! Your idea is novel and good, you might just have to file the edges a bit. In my experience the best way to do that is to get 2-3 people that like the idea and then toss some ideas around, the synergy usually comes up with something good.
Now I could be corny and just tell you to join the Arcane Order as a Spellsword i.e. a Fighter(barbarian)/Mage and promote the math in magic idea there. However, I would like to encourage you to keep the idea alive and form your guild, attract members and get some real-world-mathematicians to become PS-world-mathwizards/mages. Variety is good and makes the game interesting.
An idea on how you can introduce math into the guild and the game. If your mages go after aquiring and mastering specific sought-after spells you can offer them to other players or use it on their behalf, but in order to do so they have to complete a quest that involves solving some math quizes like the ones above in this thread :P . (By the way I am a little clueless ?( 8o  as to the answers - my guess on the first one would be 5 to the power of 3 but I\'m probably making a fool of myself :D )
If you can get a guild up and running with 2-3 members to brainstorm I would be happy to give some ideas but I\'m already on the Arcane Order council and assisting another getting started so don\'t expect too much.
A last idea I think your Math guild could be a likely ally to Arcane Order, especially if there are many mages as members, so keep us in mind.
Good luck and DON\'T give up. X(
:P

The answer is 5*4*3 (if you consider diferent a,b,c to b,c,a to a,c,b, to b,a,c to c,b,a to c,a,b; if not, just divide by 6).
-
?( :P :D 8o X( That\'s my feelings on the math problem issue, looks confsing? You bet it is!
So what\'s happening with your guild idea?
-
Let\'s do a Brainstorm.
What do you want from a guild that cares about math?
What would convince you to sign up with a guild that cares about math?
-
Ok here goes ...
When I think math and Yliakum I think:
- Science (Geology/\"crystology\" and biology/ecology)[/B]
A) Geology in Yliakum will be based on rock-formations (tunneling and exploration applications)
B) Crystals are very important, so ... Crystology will be another applied science based on mathematical knowledge applied to crystals.
C) Biology/Ecology is also very important in order to support life in the special environment of Yliakum.
- Accountancy (Applied math :D )[/B]
A) Running the financial affairs (bookkeeping and banking and/or stocks/bonds) of the merchant class. Could be very lucrative :P
B) Same would apply for Government, someone has to run fiscal policy etc.
- Cryptology[/B]
A) Making and breaking codes (probably based on glyphs). Applied to secret messages, communication. Useful in diplomacy, espionage etc.
- Advanced Magic[/B]
A) Spells requiring formulas as in math. Difficult to learn and master 8)
B) Improvement of magical spells by something akin to algorytms.
- \"Astronomy/Astrology\"[/B]
A) \"Astronomy\" in Yliakum is not based on stars and planets but on crystals, their glow, energy phases etc. The study of this could be extremely important.
B) Just as Astrology is an applied form of Astronomy there should be developed an art/science for Yliakum. It could include prediction/soothsaying and an explanation of how things/energies etc. hang together and influence the lives of those living in Yliakum. (would be closely linked to magic).
If all or some of these ideas are developed and a guild(s) are formed who specialize in and develop these things I for one would be interested (had I not been attached already)
If you decide not to pursue the idea we can maybe incorporate some of these ideas in AO and you can join there. But again let\'s run with this idea and see where it leads us.
-
Tell me about your guild Wolfmane; maybe I\'ll join

I\'m not Wolf but im still going to answer, u can read about our guild in our homepages(yeayea, theyre ugly, were working on it), and u can contact any councilmember(Longraider, Raiyuh and Malentor are away right now), we are always ready to answer your questions. To contact us, u can go to our forum, or use msn, which every councilmember has. You can find our msn addresses in AO site\'s \"about\" section.
-
Hi Huggin!
Sorry to hear your\'e dropping the Math guild idea, it seemed like there was some interest in the idea.
However, AO is recruiting and you are most welcome to join. My e-mail and MSN name is the same: wolfmane_ps@hotmail.com, so mail me or log on to MSN and we can talk \"live\" and in private in stead of clogging up the forum.
A barbarian/fighter like your character is most welcome in AO as we need Spellswords, i.e. a fighter with some magical knowledge and ability, to be part of our offensive as well as defensive \"Iron Fist\". Don\'t worry AO is by no means a nerdy wizard\'s guild with their noses buried too deep into spellbooks to know what is going on around them :D . You want challenges, adventure and fighting with a flavour of the magical? Well then a Spellsword in AO is what you\'re looking for!
And we will incorporate those math ideas into AO to see if we can attract some of those math-buddies of your\'s that love playing wizards in role-playing games. :D
See you soon, I hope :P
PS we already have members 2 from Denmark, 1 from Finland, 2 from Poland, 3 from USA etc. We are thus a thoroughly international guild in the \"real\" world. I for one would love to see an additional member from Mexico.
-
greetings crow, well I think it would be great to have one as yourself in the ranks of the Order Arcane, we need more individuals that would do things other than mutilate the rats in the seller as apprentices. Or rather one who sees the world and wants to learn more about it, that is one of the basis of witch (errr wich witch...) this guild wass created and i am looking into haveing organized parties of astromoners, Mathmaticians, etc. in the guild.
