Well I don\'t know about you people .. But I\'m worried..
The thing is the game looks fab. for know ... Well for many reasons .. Great Graphics .. FREE.. open source ... multi-OS... etc...
But when you look at the games lined-up for release in the next 3 months ( HL2 .. need I say more ??) It really scares me that maybe in another 6 months we will have a 3D MMORPG financed by a multi-millionare or even M$ which will have better equipment and Developers to complete it ..
So by the time PS is released and actually on its v1.0 ( thats about 2 MORE years !!) people might have actually started playing other MMORPGS and PS might not even have a forum anymore .... even if the game is FREE ( that might actually change ... I think )
So instead of worrying about the characters and storylines and quests blah blah .. Worry about the GAME ITSELF !! ...
Please give me some rest and give me reasons why most of you won\'t leave this game ...
I also forgot to mention the future high-speend inet .... that may make Anarchy online playable :P
T.C. people
( My last post in sYDNeY .... heh .. )
-
Actually the thing you should be worrying about is the graphics. In two or three years this game will look crap. No offense.
-
Don\'t worry about that, Jed, (can I call you Jed...? Sorry, I give everyone pet-names. :P) the ingame graphics will be continually updated.
As for the game as one of the first free MMORPGs, I don\'t think we have to worry about it being taken over by any other projects. Think about it- other companies would need to take just as long to develop their games if they wish to compete with the ideals that Planeshift has in mind.
...And lastly, I\'M NOT A BUNNY!
-
Exactly, Jedi.
Reasons for staying:
hmm... let\'s see here here,
-It\'s free
-People know me, unlike popular games such as roonskape
-I like my guild :D
-\'tis the best there is :)
-ummm... all these could change, but as long as it\'s free, I\'m happy
*Goes crazy and posts the name of evil*
roonskape
runesc@pe
RU|\\|3sC/\\p3
rune\'s cape
:P
Edit: you say that so much moogie, it should be in your sig :P
-
My reasons for sticking around:
The game is fun, even in such an early stage.
The community is close-knit and friendly.
For once I feel ready for any question the newbies may throw at me. ;)
Pure dedication.
Being part of a gaming revolution is a pretty attractive idea to me. :D
-
My reasons for sticking around:
Moogie
Nice community
It\'s free!
Like how the game is going.
-
yes the main thing everyone likes about this game is that its free.....
i mean im 15, im not gonna be spending 10+ dollars on a game every month just to be addicted to it and channel out all life other then the computer....... i would rather do it for free! :D
plus whatever money i do happen to make it wont matter because for many games you need a credit card which my parents wont let me charge game stuff on :(
but for now like monketh said, its cool now cuz theres only a couple hundred who actually play it and we all know eachother so its like a big family lol group hug! *Hugs All*
-
People are mean to me. :(
Ya, I don\'t have free reign with a credit card either. :(
-
-Its free
-I like my guild
-I like the community
-I like the concept
-I like kittens (oh, well.. )
-
hmm let\'s see, why am I still here after almost a year?
1. I like to see this thing grow into a full game and be part of it from the beginning.
2. I like the community.
3. it\'s free (who didn\'t see that one coming from a mile away)
4. many other reasons......
-
OH, I KNOW! I want seniority membership when the game actually launches. :]

Well, like i said to you on PS: spam :P

Qadsawi, free, owt for nowt, a lot of us live by it, as long as its free theres no worrys that there will be people playing, even in two years time youlll be hard fetched to find another rpg with graphics even as good as the stage its at now.
-
The engine Crystal Space will keep improving aswell. So i doubt that this game will look outdated in a few years. The engine will improve and have all the new features that modern gamers demand. No worries.
-
When you have things like Half-Life 2 to compete with, it already looks outdated. ;)
-
Graphics is not so important for a free game. Imagine how many people still play text-based MUDs today. And Planeshift offers SO MUCH more ....
-
*Great potential
*Graphics superb given the fact that it is free
(Like Americas Army except that game had a lot of government funding)
*An interesting, unique world
*Easy for people to join into the small but growing community
*Oh, and I\'m on the first list of earliest registered forum members :D
This game has a lot ahead, enjoy the ride.
-
I\'m not complaining about the graphics. I think they\'e awsome for a free game.
-
I\'m still here because..........I really don\'t know, but I\'ll just blame it on Vengeance to make things easier
-
- It\' s free
- The community is nice and friendly
- Graphics are beautifull
- It\'s growning with our help

You don\'t know how warm and bubbly it makes you feel to be one of the reasons that people play this game... :D
-
My main reasons for staying around are:
Eventually the engine will look more awesome than HL2 :P
A community with people worth debating with
The concept, and the game being free
My guild
And a lot of things that would take too long to state...
Moogie isn\'t one of my reasons (\'cause I\'m allergic to cats :P)

hey Moogie I\'ve seen your picture and that joke before somewhere... I can\'t remember the exact phrase though... something about every time you [do something] a kitty dies... please think of the kitties... but in that picture there were big purple things chasing the cat... (I guess you cut out the purple dudes)awesome cartoon though
-
I\'M NOT A BUNNY! Seriously, that joke\'s gone too far now. :P
The original picture (http://www.hosstyle.com/kittens.htm) should not be viewed by anyone as it contains a naughty word. So don\'t click the link. I\'m warning you.
Seriously. ;)

ROFL :D
I\'ve been doing that a lot lately... I\'m quite dizzy atm actually.... oh what the heck, ROFL :P
-
LMAO that website is hillarious, I\'ve put it in my favorites :P
-
well i just read those replies ...
It might seem fun now for all you guys who said ... good gameplay or graphics but will u guys stay here for the next year or two till the game is released as a ver.1 ?
btw. Moggie they\'re just tryin to piss you off... but I really thought you where a bunny :P its better than a pussy cat ....
-
I thought moogle\'s name was taken from those cool little cat things in final fantasy 7...
I\'ll stick around until this game\'s done and dusted because if people like this game enough to put up with the glitches and explore what city there is now think how fun the finished game will be!
-
ok I have good reasons for you all:
- ultima online survived for.....xxx years even if it was ridiculus in graphics
- people don\'t want final fantasy xxxxxx and son on online, they want a real rpg like ps is gonna be
-

A lot won\'t (even if they think they will) but some will, especially since CB will have a lot more to do.

You could say that, but really I got it from FF3. That was the first Final Fantasy game where Moogles were a proper part of the action, helping the plot and also with the inclusion of Mog as one of the playable characters. :)
-
Wait a second! Moogles! There are moogles in Secret of Mana! I love that game :D
-
Don\'t worry moogle i knew you were a cat the moment i laid eyes on you. Wait, secret of mana came out afta final fantasy didn\'t it? Copyright police! Nee-naw nee-naw!
-
...it was the same developers. ;)
-
Oh, that\'s ok I couldn\'t remember the number for the police anyway. 9-9-something...
-
I wouldn\'t worry about Half-Life 2.. it\'s a totally different game genre.. I don\'t see why it would a threat to the crowd that plays these types of games.
-
I play both types. Plus, in a few years, PS will have better graphics than HL2. :]
-
thats saying alot this game would be better than all the paying games
-
no, in a couple of years HL2 will look old to any game...since it doesn\'t evolve like PS (and crystal space) it will end up like most of the other games do, sometimes played for kicks and costing $10 or less.
-
some of you guys can show a bit more respect...
-
Huh? Please specify a little..

I remember Venge talking about Planeshift 2d once from way back when... is the graphics engine really evolving that much? And do you guys believe that it will be improved enough over it\'s lifespan to PASS HL2? HL2 is pretty sweet at the moment.
-
CrystalSpace has the potencial to evovle in many years to come, even decades. HL2 doesn\'t have that potential.
-
how?
-
I think you guys think that HL2 is another long shot like the latest win server (2003) ...
HL2 blew me from my bed with its graphics ..... Even though I\'m not one of those graphics freaks who will buy a game if they think the graphics are \'cool\' .. I would want to see the gameplay .. I still love the old HL and would play it from time to time .... Even though I have those new FPS games I still find HL the game that may take me away from all my troubles....And another thing ... PS will blow away HL2 .. You gotta be jokin me .... HL2 is commerial ...PS is open source .. You might have the best Devs in the planet but if you don\'t have the kudos then how the heck do you expect to squeeze out some extra stuff ??
From the replies I read I trully believe that most of you guys focus on the graphics too much ... Not alot of you mentioned gameplay .. New quests and stuff like that .... Honestly if your here because its Free and 3D then you\'ll leave the moment you get HL2 .. If your here for the open source movement and in need of a game for your box then you might stay a few more days ... But thats about it ... The only people that will even bother themselves in a few months time will be those who love games for their gameplay ....
T.C. People....
-
well considering hl2 wont look good in a couple of years and ps will end up looking better eq for example has looked the same ever since it came out lol but ps alreasy has better graphics then it but who knows ps could end up being one of the mmorpg\'s there is

-
well final fantasy isn\'t a real rpg ; look at baldur\'s gate or morrowind, here is the difference ; anyway I didn\'t mean to be rude with people playing FF
Concerning Half life however, you have to see that it is not only graphics but the whole physics model ; crystal space is developping, slowly however ; they\'ll never reach what\'s best at one precise moment, they do not have studios
And honnestly I don\'t need wonderfull graphs to enjoy ps
-
i dont need wonderful graphs to my top thing i wanna do is explore and do all the options there gonna have
-

Well, that\'s really all PS has right now isn\'t it? Besides a lame crystal hunt (which I am nonetheless addicted to) and two quests there really is no gameplay at the moment. I haven\'t really seen anything about HL2 since I really don\'t care, but yes, there is no way for PS to compete with the graphics of HL2 anytime soon, and it wasn\'t made to.
Now, will gameplay be really important in the future? Of course, they have some of the best ideas I\'ve seen and will continue to improve as the years go by. If people here really didn\'t care for gameplay then there would be no posts in the wish list (or the roleplaying board), instead there is way too many.
So it would not be smart to stay you stick around here for the gameplay, because there is not really any, and no one has any idea how the gameplay will be when the game is further along since people\'s opinions change, and with it the game.
Myself, I\'m just around because I like the direction it is currently heading, not that it\'s free or the graphics are pretty ok or that I like the community (which I won\'t go into). I would gladly pay for this game if it wasn\'t too much and was a lot more complete, being free is just an added bonus for me. :D
-
I wish i didnt get into ps so early lol since theres nothing to do yet but it will be one of the best
-
haha, yeah I\'ll probably disappear for a couple months later come back for a week disapear come back...
-
1. Open Source : Which means anyone has the potential to make improvements, and the programmers listen to legitimate complaints
2. Free!: as long as it stays that way I will continue to support this project any way I can.
3. This project is one I personally believe in, and with that in mind, I hope to make contributions to this project upon completion of my education.
4. In the mean time I will study hard and Alpha-test when I have the opportuinity to do so.
-
My goodness so many people getting a little testy on this.
On the subject of Half-Life2 It will eventually end development. PS will never be out of development. this means new graphics and gameplay features will constantly be added. You won\'t have to get PS 2 the next chapter to get an improved game it will be ongoing. That is the difference between Open Source and Commercial. Not quality or ability. Open source is in constant improvement. When HL2 is released it may be better as far as graphics go than PS but PS WILL eventually pass it up. Thats all were saying.
-
but... by that time there will be HL 3 and EQ 3 and Final Fantasy L...

second to that ...only that with HL2 the moment it gets out the development stops.
and i also agree with zaphar and kiern on the fact that that\'s all that needs to be said. ...how will Crystalspace evolve? ...well, just check out their page on http://crystal.sourceforge.net/drupal/ ...i really have no idea how people can flame about things they\'ve never seen or even tried themsleves.
my reasons fom staying in PS?
- close connections with other players (i\'ve got some real pals here)
- this is one game i REALLY look forward to see evolve, and this project has my full trust
- open-source and the community driven ideas of course :D
- multi-platform
- it makes me calm (not that i\'m a nervous wreck otherwise, but still)
- again great and nice players
(- the possibility that it can (and willl) evolve ad infinitum ....for those who don\'t understand the 3rd alinea)
-
- Relative good graphics
- free
- Developers care
- I like the people around here.
- possibility to affect the way the game is gonna look when it\'s done.
HL2 will be the best graphically of course, but what did you expect? This is a free game, and HL2 is the followup of the greatest FPS created so far.
HL was made 95, and it lives still today. I\'m pretty sure that HL2 will be as popular as its precursor, but this is no competition. It\'s not even the same genre.
This will be a great game, with, or without HL2-graphics.
-
Sorry for being stoopid and asking, but what\'s HL2? I\'m not as much of a games boffin as you lot, clearly.
Edit: Never mind just found out - wait! Half-Life 2! Wowee!
-
Although I think that HL2 will be a huge hit and come with many mods (possibly Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, and many user created levels), this will not affect PS.
Maybe some players will leave for awhile to play HL2, I\'m sure they will come back. Besides, there is no problem with playing some HL2 and then Planeshift in the same day (Unless you don\'t have a lot of free time like me :( ).
-
the wierd part that i see in PS comparing to other games is that it always gets compared to games that aren\'t in its genre, and that are (said to be) top-notch. i\'d take that as a compliment if i was a dev. :]
but really, let\'s stop comparing a free open-sourced constantly-evolving MMORPG to a (mostly single-player) commercial propertery shoot-em-up, ok? ...there\'s no point really
p.s. doom still lives on and is decades old now :P ...not to mention different MUDs, nethack, tetris-clones etc. etc.
-

That is possible - but the most important part of Planeshift is that it is and WILL BE a free RPG. This makes it completely different from HL2. drawing a different kind of gamer (for the most part). I don\'t think HL2 is a very good example of \'competition\' for PS for these reasons.
-
PS is
- MMORPG, with a lot of other (usually) cool people
- evolving all the time (like Linux ;) ).
HL2 is
- FPS, single player => really a great game by the look of it, short life
- MP (DM, CTF, whatever) => good to wash away the stress, especially after one of those days at work. Don\'t play at this too long though, it\'s not healthy :D
- (I know, the mods ... but it\'s about MP - yeah evolving too 8) )
So to me, those 2 just don\'t compare. It\'s like a long summer and an occasional rain (ouch this is sooo bad, please delete that ! ).
(don\'t take me wrong, as soon as HL2 is there, I will rush to the store ! And one week later, it will be a good game to remember about)
And the others xyRPGs, well, once you have settled at one place, it takes a lot to make you move - one day has so many hours, not more. Unless it\'s really worth it, but I can\'t see a good reason among the other xyRPGs out there.
Errrr, what was the question already ? Ah yes : with no particular order of preference,
- RP, guilds, ...
- people
- under perpetual developpment and improvement by a very good and dedicated team
- 3D 1st/3rd world, very nice graphics
- rooftops (did I say that ? really ? must be a glitch)
- the quests. Why, it\'s a refreshing experience
- did I say free ? Oh I would be ready to pay a fee for this (a few rubies every month or so)
and probably a ton of other reasons. But I must go ...
-

Har Har that\'s my kind of payment plan
-
What I just thought could be dangerous is this.
Since PS is open source, it\'s not stopping anybody from taking the code, changing models, design, story, and creating totaly different game and following up to every update that PS does.
And once PS becomes really hi-tech game, people could easily make a similar game based on the work of the devs of PS. This could create 20 more of games like PS, some may even start charging.
Or maybe I\'m missing some brain cells :D
-
Well here are my thoughts on this subject...... Asuming that the engine for PS is also Open source, there should be no reason for it to stop evloving...... So with that being said PS has the potential to grow and evolve as long as the team and players continue to support the project. I hope that I may also get involved after my education. By then most of the bugs will be fixed.........
-
Ok, you have to understand that...
characters and storylines and quests blah blah...
IS what makes the game. :P with out the caracters you would be nobody in the game, no NPC\'s, no Monsters(etc...), without story lines there would be no point, and without quest there wouldn\'t much to do....
-
I know most of you if not all have heard of the MMORPG called Everquest and have probably seen the screenshots for the upcoming EQ2.
I\'d say Planeshift is on its way to being at least as graphically pleasing as the current EQ and thats far more than enough for me!
As Planeshift is being offered free of any charge, one might assume that it will attract many people who cannot afford a subscription game the likes of EQ (aside from those who refuse to pay ;) ). I would think these people would appreciate graphics that don\'t take a completley tricked out uber-computer to run, I certainly would!
But as for where the graphics are now take a look at where EQ was to begin with=>
Everquest \"Proof of Concept\" (http://eqlive.station.sony.com/multimedia/dnloads/oldeq.zip)
Instructions:
- Set your desktop to 256 colors. It won\'t run in anything higher.
- Double click\"everquest.exe\"
- Login is: solo
- Leave the password field blank.
- The client will start in a window. Hit \"F2\" to go to full-screen mode.
- To exit the client, hit your Escape key.
- If you cannot run in Windows XP click on \"Everquest.exe\" choose properties and select Win 98/ME and Run in 256 colors from compatibility menu.
[/COLOR]
Looks to me like Planeshift will do more than fine :]
-
Fiere thanks for that input it really tickled my laughing-muscle :D . Excellent point. The keywords are:
- FREE
- Open-sourced
- Constantly-evolving world
- Constantly-evolving storylines
- Player involvement in developing ideas
- 3D online permanent fantasy world
Free , isn\'t that what the web was all about before it got dot.commed! Let that spirit live, that\'s what brought me here in the first place to check PS out!
Open sourced , thank God someone eventually had the vision to do for PC (online) gaming what Linux had done for OS\'s - gave everybody the CHOICE whether they want to make someone else rich or join a co-operative community of \"do-it-yourself\'ers\". This must rate right up there with the abolishment of slavery and the promised ascenscion to heaven! :P
Constantly-evolving world , now THIS is why I stayed on after my first visit. This promises to be as real as reality but with the added built in advantage that you can go off-line if life gives you Hell 8) .
Constantly-evolving storylines , talk about dynamism. I hate HL etc. etc., it gets plain boring after 3 days. Can have just as much fun doing the same thing over and over in front of a one-arm-bandit in a casino!
Player involvement in developing ideas . Now I had already been convinced to stick around, but when I realized to what extend one can (and is encouraged to) participate in the actual development of the concept, \"spirit\" and growth of the PS project ... Well let\'s just say I\'ve finished pouring the foundations!
3D online permanent fantasy world . Now this one sells itself. Let\'s just say I\'ve found me a home.
As for others copy-catting the open source elements. No copy-right is worth the paper it is written on. In fact the more you try and protect it the greater the will of others to copy, crack etc. Being the first, staying on top through constant involvement and continous development ... Somehow I don\'t tremble with fear at the prospect of PS being caught or overrun by copycats!
So in my humble, subjective and utterly correct opinion PS is wonderful, the best and heading for greatness!
*Wolfmane leaves the stage, bowing gracefully to acknowledge the jubilant adoration of the crowd falling at his feet :D *
-
First of all people keep saying quests and graphics - based on what there is now I would not still be here, lol I\'m afraid I\'m contented to keep my one crystal and not crystal hunt! The reason I want to stick around is Wolfmane\'s option number 5 -> developing quests and putting my own mark on this game!
Sashok did bring up a good point though - people could easily copy our ideas and create competition for the original - but any copying of such ideas would inevitably lead back to the original would spread THIS planeshift\'s popularity... this is a complex business theorum... but lets just say many companies are beggining to see the light in copy-lefting their products just to spread them like a scourge upon the market! Look at 2-buck-chuck every wine conoseurs\' worst nightmare but a businessman\'s dream... and look at Wizards of the coast... they have realized that they make the most money off the D&D rulebooks - so they are copylefting their D&D ruleset so that games and movies and boooks,... etc etc will spread their popularity... in essence the free-product movement is nothing more than market-flooding and subsequent popularity-gains
Great concept I love it!

Man you have a habit of making my day! :D In the spirit of this below-the-belt reply (at least as perceived by my dirty mind, though I would have thought you had 2 of \'em) consider this little joke:
What does the hurricane say to the Palmtree?
\"Hold onto your nuts .... this is not going to be any ordinary bl*w-job
*ahem duck\'s as rotten eggs, half-empty beer bottles and less than fresh tomatoes rain on him from the audience* 8)
in essence the free-product movement is nothing more than market-flooding and subsequent popularity-gains - Drilixer
Exactly, I rest my case, your Honour.
Popularity will help bring in fresh ideas and renew efforts, but as long as it is focused on developing Planeshift and not countless offshoots thereof. - kbilik
Amen, I agree fully kbilik. Spare us all the mod\'s and offshoots. I vote for lobbying for: \"PS, only PS and nothing but PS so .......\" :P :D

not if the puss... i mean puppies! :P have become the key issue here...

I\'ve always wanted to ask this... how do the devs do it? Make it free I mean? Is it advertisement, sponsorship, a loan or what? Maybe the Devs will recieve tax breaks cuz this might be considered working for charity (for poor and disgruntled gamers, that is :D ).
-
no it\'s none of those... everyone knows they signed a pact with Satan
get with it man!

graphics don\'t matter to me. I still haven\'t got the game to start on my computer
