I KNOW this has been discussed before - I have seen it discussed before BUT! with the recent NPC fiasco where that darned NPC-that-shall-not-be-named was added in front of the inn and would not take the correct answer in proper American usage English...
The NPCs desperately need a multiple choice conversation interface... the current system is definately less realistic since these NPCs are so partial to what people say and how they say it - The current \'interface\' (for lack of a better word) is just frustrating and makes questing more akin to English Class with a dose of an elementary school Vocabulary B...
In conclusion, the current system is nothing more than a shoddy multiple choice system that requires phenomenal guessing skills and contains more than a little bias towards anyone who does not speak Devese (the language of the Devs).
-
true, that really does suck, but it will probably be fixed in next versions right devs?
-
Yes. If you are so eager to have it fixed, then fix it.
-
harsh Caldazar lol
-
Hehe, well, I know it sounded harsh. But after all, this has been discussed so many times, and this thread didnt contribute any new ideas what so ever.
-
Caldazar I wish I could fix it, and I am sorry that I can\'t. If I had the ability to lay out the scripting or whatver it is the devs need for a graphical conversation sytem I would. I am sorry if it upsets you that I can\'t help any more than to let you or anyone else who reads these forums that the interface is not very user friendly. For those players that have no programming skills whatsoever *waving hand wildly in the air* all we *I* can do is let you people *the people who know how to program* know...

I didnt meen to sound rude. :)
-
you were rude but you were funny lol
-
I know, but it was late/early, and since english isn\'t my native language I sometimes have trouble formulating correct sentences :O

One of the reasons why the current system of NPC interaction will just never work. Sure, it\'s different, it\'s a novelty, but face it devs. It really does suck. :(
-
haha, nice Mogura in fact there was a French guy on last night asking for people to help me form English sentences so he could do the quest :P
-
It doesn\'t suck, the old adventures had exactly the same system. And it worked just fine, noone complained and it was actually a very good system.
All you youngsters have never played those games have ya? All you kids are spoiled with fast paced 3d action, cant take it if you have to think for more then 10 minutes eh?? Yes, we old gamers know what real games are all about, its about using your brain. Not who can choose between 3 different choices in a menu. You kids have a lot to learn!!

ummm, right.

haha, well if you want an old school game join Atari and ... work on Never Winter Nights... and oh nevermind, hahhaa
anyways - there are many reasons why the current conversation system is NOT user friendly - there is also the matter of the growing French community in planeshift - just saying that changes will have to be made anyway why not do it a little more user friendly - people shouldnt have to spend hours talking to one NPC so that he [understands] one line from you... that is NOT realistic
-
the system is not bad just the data. At least as far as I can tell anyway. They require strict phrases when a simple word match would do. A prime example is the extremely non-intutive converstion with the last person of the new quest. One word would have been sufficient to match but they required a phrase that was matched exactly with no room for error. That was the problem. It shouldn\'t be too difficult to change the criteria for quests like that to a more intuitive set of data to match. Of course the beautiful part of a public pre-alpha game is that the dev\'s get a chance to see the results of things like this and improve the data in the beginning not later when it gets harder. :-)

lol are you talking about tetris old man?
-
yeah... the tetris chat system was the shiznet...
-
it really doesnt suck it works ok ....... im only 16 and im saying this so im gonna say it again so you can read it again it doesnt suck ti works ok
-
as impressive as that is Shangralath... your age doesn\'t really mater because it hs no effect on the chat system - the system is flawed because it is not friendly or particularly useful to/for any users - period.
-
*puts his head down in shame* ........ *cries*

Ah yes the old text based adventures. I remember how damn annoyed I would always get. Sometimes you would get stuck for months. And there was no fmv at the end to celebrate your achievement. Sometimes all you got was \"You Finished, Congratulations!\".
Anyways, I agree with the fact that it doesn\'t work perfect right now, but it is early, i am sure they will smooth it out. Plus it\'s the only quest we have right now, I would prefer if it took some time to figure it out.

...Maybe if \'figureing it out\' involved more than just stringing together phrases and plugging them into a Grammar-freak NPC, who doubles as an English teacher in his or her spare time.
-
Well, I have no doubts of the capabilities and indeed the dedication of the devs. I\'m sure they will continue to improve the NPCs and this system may eventually become so brilliant that we can talk to them about such things as weather patterns, recent events, maybe even what he had for lunch and if he liked it. That would be cool.
What I\'m worried about, though, is those of us who do not have English as our native tongue. The developers will need to find themselves perfectly-speaking French, German, Swedish (the list goes on) translators who can reproduce the exact dialog into their own language. So, not only do you have the massive task of creating an NPC dialog database in English, but then you have to translate it to 14-odd different languages *aswell*.
Hell of a lot of work for a relatively simple aspect of the game, if you ask me.
-
Mogura is right - at first glance the translation doesn\'t sem like it would be so difficult - but then you realize that all the grammar and spelling has to be flawless in the current system for it to work... if the devs accidently left out one pronoun or letter in a word a quest or a line of quests might be uncompleteable...
-
I remember once I was talking to the NPC you probably got the quest from...
I was bored, and ended up wasting 3 hours trying to get the quest, but to no avail. For all I know, I was off by one word, but you get the jist of it; the current dialouge is horrible.
-
-new generation chooses multiple choise-
you know I would definately like to see like I don\'t know, the latest example I can bring from the game I played Valhalla Chronicles, horrible game, but at least easy chat system.
The npc says something. and your answer pops out
a. explain to me about what you said.
b. if you don\'t explain to me about what you said I will kick your ass.
c. Please kind sir, explain about what you said, I\'ll give you a cookie.
d.I\'ll kill you, you piece of shit.
e. Stay away from me, I\'m freaking crazy, I\'m suicidal!!.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaa!!
There, much better system.
:)
-
nice sig Sashok20! That system would be much better than the current one.. in fact it is the current one (since the current one is just mulitple choice anyways) with the exception that you dont have to spend hours guessing!
