First of all, for those of you who dont know what your doing, I urge you NOT to do this simply because you will end up re-installing your PlaneShift client.
Second of all, these settings are for 128 MB CARD USERS only, because thats all I was able to configure them for, so if you actually know what your doing as well, then configure more settings for the 16mb cards and add to this post.
Third and final of all, I take no responsibility in screwing up your game if you did somthing from the tutorial wrong...if the info below doesnt help you, then please read my more explainable tutorial and look at my screen shots below.
I have marked the config zip which contains my entire config dir, just replace your config dir
(c:\\program files\\planeshift\\config\\) with mine and you should be all set
(dont forget to use the unzip fix as well with the settings though)

Unzip all of your world maps into the main Planeshift dir.
(e.g. C:\\Program Files\\PlaneShift\\world)
each world should have its own folder (of course, so files wont over-write

Hope you enjoy my examples and my fix, if you have any problems just be sure to let me know
(on here only dont bug my personal life)
I check the forums often so I should be answering any questions you may have.

it worked great for me, now i go between areas seamlessly and the only lag i get is now server lag, thanks tons :D
-
:)
-
hehe, I\'ll favorite this... but I\'m too tired right now to do it ROFL
-
:D
-
hmm
-
Who else has tried this? I find it hard to believe this would help in any way.
- Venge
-
hehe - i favorited it a while ago - but I havn\'t tried it yet - maybe I\'ll give it a whirl later...
-
Well I have a G-Force 4 with 64 Megs of Ram...... Will this work, I am affraid to try, because the last time I installed PS it wouldn\'t patch.... finally I was able to get the patch to d/l and install. I am not sure I want to go throught that headache again.
-
I\'m going to try it when the server comes up again. I will gladly forward my before and after stats for you if you tell me where to send it venge.
-
Vengeance, I tried it on my computer. I was getting some lag around the temple and few other spots.
I have planeshift on a 2gig partition. The lag from loading files was cut down by 20 to 40%.
Some other settings that helped with my fps.
Video.OpenGL.MaxTextureCache = 0
Video.OpenGL.Caps.HWPlanes = 128
-
I\'ve just followed your tutorial, sounds like a great idea because I was wondering why everything had to be squeezed into .zips anyway. Can\'t find out how badly you\'ve messed my game up yet though because the server\'s down :P
-
Just logged on works like a charm, still get lag when looking at the temple but way less than before. Thank you!
-
Glad to see that most of you like the fix, those of you who have tried it anyways.
I forgot the mention the fact that when you run the planeshift updater it will kill the fix due to it over writing the psconfig.cfg.
If you would like to keep the psconfig.cfg just make a backup of my copy, simple as that. :)
Now lets just try and con the other PS admins/devs into applying my settings to see how they like it. :)
[No more pre-loading to the RAM..yuck yuck yuck]
[Run straight from the hard drive]
[And at least use .pk3 minus the pre-load ram process]
:):D
-
now I remember what I was going to say earlier..Talad, invest more on letting the rest of the team make improvements!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:)
Thanks,
Ganondor/Raistel

Damn, took me forever to find this thread.
I\'m going to try this and report back.
-
Testing Complete
I see no noticable improvements. No lack of graphical/rendering/texture loading lag. In short, nothing has changed. (cept that missing fence texture)
How did I measure? I only used myself. I went in expecting this to work, expecting things to be smoother. I tested in the barrel room exiting the dungeon, the plaza, and just general moving about. All the lag seemed to be in all the same places.
I see now why this thread got buried.
*sigh* oh well.

-
It does work! It cut my lag in half. It\'s not promising to remove lag, and places like the temple will still run slow, but you should have noticed some kind of change as long as you followed the instructions right.
-
I did correctly follow the instructions.
Maybe the effectiveness of this lag fix is dependent on system specs? Mine are:
1.0Ghz Athlon
512MB DDR
64MB Geforce2 MX400
What are yours?
I have the ability to turn the \"lag fix\" on and off by renaming a file, so maybe I will run a few more tests.
-
Hmm when I tried this the game wouldn\'t even load but crashed out at start-up. This may have had something to do with one of the zip files failing to unzip properly even after I\'d downloaded it again.
-
Nope. The zip file you are refering to is dungeon.zip, and it is a fence texture that fails to extract. You can see the results of that in this screen (http://www.gamesplit.net/ps/shot2.jpg). But this does not affect game crashing.
The instructions were poorly written. This could be your problem.
-
I have way worse stats than that abemore, not sure but defintiely under 1ghz. I get slowdown but I play all my games on 640x480 anyway so I\'ve learnt to live with 5fps frame rates. I\'ll be getting a new video card soon so I can play enter the matrix, so I\'ll report back then.
-
I\'m also getting the error unzipping a certain file (dungeon.zip), and I get the following error while loading the client:
The instruction at \"0x0bc82608\" referenced memory at \"0x00000000\". The memory could not be \"read\".
I DID however notice a considerable performance jump in the parts of the client that I could access...it seems like it would work like a charm if only I got around this error.
Edit:
I\'m running Win 2k Pro with a 2ghz pentium 4, GeForce 4 card with 64 mb of ram, and 512mb system RAM.
-
The man is right actually, it\'s very bad to run through zip files, but a load of extra strain on the computer processes.
-
well I never, against everything i thought would happen it worked a charm, my all round fps is up by about 5 - 10 but the main thing is it doesnt randomly drop anymore as a texture is loaded.
-
Hurrah thats scientific proof that it works. Devs take note.
-
i wonder if converting all the textures to jpg would fasten anything up
-
For the people whose performance improves from this fix, please post exactly what kind of computer you have and CPU in particular.
-
Win98 (until i find my goddamn winXP book)
PIII 1ghz
256Mb ram
geforce2 gfx
Edit: oh its worth saying i never d/l\'ed any of the files listed first, I could not access the dls, all ive done is got rid of the .zips and changed the paths to folders instead.
-
After looking through the .cfg files included in the config.zip archive, I have come to the conclusion that the author of this \"fix\" is an idiot.
Many of the values set in the configuration files seem to have been changed at random and without justification. Some keys have been set well outside acceptable range causing them to default to their original values. Even the values of disabled/commented keys have been pointlessly changed.
In addition, I see no reason to edit vfs.cfg or extract awsdef.zip.
Just as a note, if you\'re going to modify something, you might want to know what you\'re doing.
-
The little fix thing worked for me once, but its not working any more... I might have changed something but I can\'t remember what it would be.
What the fix allowed me to do was move for the first time and actually speak in \"real time\" with out lag..Only thing was/is, is that the textures looked wierd, like they had been cut up by a paper shredder.. nun the less it worked and I would like to do it again regardless of the texture looks.
BTW, Codex said it was for 128mb cards, I used it on a 32 :
WinXP
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (@1.97ghz)
SG3 ProSavage8 DDR266 (intergrated) video
128mb pc2100 (- 32 for video)
PS I would like to know what I could possibly do to configure for my card to run in 800x600 full screen with no sound, since I can\'t get setup to work correctly.
Thanks !

After much experimenting I found the one thing that doesn\'t work for me is unzipping the world files. If I do this and alter the PSclient as described the game freezes while loading world (No its not that I haven\'t waited long enough, I left it for about an hour and a half when it normally takes 5 min). Strangely though his config works with the game (even though I\'ve only got a 32Mb Graphics card and not a 128Mb one) as does unzipping the models and weapons ?( . Looks like More experiments are needed to make this work.
System specs:
P3 933Mhz
128Mb SDRAM
30Gb HDD (7Gb Free)
ATI All in wonder 128 Pro Graphics (Rage128 32Mb)
Soundblaster 16 Sound Card
Windows ME
(Poor system I know but it works)

When I \'load world\', my game crashes. Someone told me to \'remap the VFS\', I think that that\'s the last part in your text file. The only problem is that my vfs.cfg is the same as the one in your text file (plus some more). Is there an error in your tutorial or am I doing something wrong?

I\'m the one that told you to remap the VFS, right?
Well, having never applied the patch, I don\'t know precisely what\'s going on, but the VFS mappings I spoke of are stored in the last part (Part 3) of psclient.cfg. You may not even have to remap, unless you extract the ZIPs to another directory. I just stated that as a possible solution, it may not even be nesscary.
P.S. Don\'t change VFS.cfg, you don\'t need to, plus, it could prevent PS from starting.
-
I tested again, carefuly monitoring the frame rate as I strafed back and forth on the balcony looking out over the dungeon pillar room. My frame rate consitantly varied from 8-20 FPS whether the fix was applied or not. I tested over and over, alternating with and without the fix for at least an hour. Same results.
-
I created a second config like abe so i could switch easily like he does, as i was no longer sure and maybe it was just my imagination. But walking around mainly in upper hydlaa, there was a definate difference, when running from the zips whilst i was turning i froze many many more times than with the folders. (however measuring the fps again i think i exagerated slightly before but i am running about 3 or 4 higher with the folders.)
-
I have tried this fix and on my system (see earlier post) the game would not get past initialising world when the world zips were extracted I\'ve checked what I\'ve done but no effect. In addition to this I\'ve tried with and without the new config and other zips and theres no noticeable difference.
-
Arrggh I can\'t stand this topic becouse I hate when people use the word Lag with wrong meening.
But congratulations Codex for this fix.

I hate that too, but what can ya\' do about it...*Sigh*
-
Skain, exactly what type of machine do you have?
-
erm.. i posted it earlier in the thread ill copy and paste
Win98 (until i find my goddamn winXP book)
PIII 1ghz
256Mb ram
geforce2 gfx
133 motherboard
30gb hd (nearly full)
-
Does someone have the file config.zip on HDD ? The link is dead if someone could put a valid link it will be great
-
Well this screwed up my MB version that is for sure. 10% of the textures is checkers :( and the FPS is the same I guess
-
I\'ll try to do it the \"Skain-way\". I have heavy performance issues(Radeon...) and will probably easily discern the difference, if there\'s any. Tommorow.
edit: eh, no...found sth out.
-
I\'m going to have to try this. I remember hearing though that low RAM = jolty.
Possibly the more ram you have the more unzipped textures/world files can be stored in it. Thus, there would\'t be any improvement from unzipping them if you have enough ram to store them all when they load at startup.
Will have to try it out my system aswell though, to be certain.
-
i guess this is worth a try sinse i cant even move due to lag atm.
-
so how do we get that config zip>? :) that old site doesnt exist anymore :)
thanks
-
well still dont know if it works couse the game is trying to kill me, but I got through without the zip.. just used the last lines of your post \'and now the config\' (or smth like that) and changed them will the last lines of psclient.cfg in PS directory.
-
the link to ur zip doesnt work...
-
Well, that could be because the link is over a year old. Look at the date of the original post in such threads before you just reply to it, saying it doesn\'t work. None of those people are around these days anyway.
