I might have brought this a couple of times but I feel this is an idea that is beneficial and would be very badly needed for the players of the Planeshift Community to ensure an even better communication between players and the development team to provide an enviroment in which all people are able to succeed. Only this time I\'m going more in-depth
Newspapers:
You know when I was thinking, newpapers are a good of way of communication primarily from the development team to the players. But I had second thoughts and I think the newspapers should be made by a group of chosen players chosen by the development team who are willing to sacrifice time to make this possible and the newspapers would be weekly not daily because it\'d be a hassle to make one everyday but it\'d be easier every week. It\'d be cool if the people who made the newspaper get a small little salary (in PS money), not too much but just enough for a little something extra.
The newspaper would cost very cheap so everyone can buy one. It wouldn\'t be a fair advantage if someone couldn\'t know much about current PS events just because he didn\'t have a little bit of money. This is how I propose if there is a newspaper how it should be divided.
Front Page (Headlines):
The biggest news would be here, I mean something within the game has happened, like for instance the storyline has taken a big turn, for example, (An Evil King has been seen and he is preparing an entire army to kill all followers of Talad) or something like that, that has an effect on the storyline.
Second Page (Advertisments):
Now I know what your thinking but it isn\'t what your thinking. What I mean by advertisements is advertisments that are in the game from in-game shops or player owned shops. For example:
\"Store of Hydlaa has been opened and items are on sale for a cheap price!\" But player owned shops would put their own little slogan and would have to pay a hefty fee in PS Money to advertise in the newspaper. If two or more people are fighting for the spot, whoever is bidding more for that space wins the space for advertising for that week.
Third Page (Guild Advertisments):
This page would advertise for guilds and for only guilds. This would cost a lot of money for guilds to bid for the space to advertise because I mean, everyone is reading it. This is self explanatory I don\'t need to continue this part.
Fourth Page (Little Gift):
This page when you open it, you recieve a small little item whether it be a small decoration, little memerobilia, or a certificate for a small item at a store, it would just make the newspaper even more worth buying.
Fifth Page (Planeshift Community Events):
If there is a big event like a party or someone is getting married it would be posted here. Players could post here for a nice chunk of change or the Developer\'s can post here if they\'re hosting a big gathering or something big.
Sixth Page; Last Page (Developer\'s Page; optional)
This would be just some notes that Developer\'s would put here if they feel like it. If there isn\'t any new Developer\'s notes then this page would not be in that week\'s newspaper.
Postal System:
Not only is communication from the Development Team to the players important but from players to other players. I also propose once again for a postal system. I still think its very important. Postal Offices would be located in only, and repeat only major cities.
Types of Mail and Costs:
Mail Letters would cost less than Parcels because they\'re lighter. But the way they get there would depend if it costs even more than that. If your are mailing a parcel extra weight charges would also be surcharged. (In Planeshift money)
Types of Delivery:
I propose there would be two ways a letter or parcel can be delivered. The regular slow way which wouldn\'t cost any extra money or the Pteosaur way which would cost more money but would be much faster. (In Planeshift money)

I agree with all the above ideas - and if the newspaper is implemented I want to volonteer for the headlines section - sounds like a good way to do GM events!

ya that\'s why I think its important that all players can communicate with each other over long distances especially if the world is gonna be huge like this one.

the mail system would serve a nice roleplayable way to talk to people from across the world *instead of messaging people and then pretending that you got a letter or something in game from them, lol*
It would also be a nice way to set up an in/out box for when you are offline
If it hasnt already been posted you should submit this to the official requests list

im on at least 5 times a week so i would volunteer for the newspaper i think this is one of the few ideas everyone agreed on so far

Not only is it a great idea but it would open another job : mail carrier.
P.S. Ill help with a small part like organizing advertizements in the news paper.

The newspaper sounds like an excellent idea to me. I\'m new to Planeshift, but I plan to play often, and if there\'s any room in the team (if the idea is accepted) I\'d be willing to be part of it ^_^

I like this idea, the small item idea seems especially creative.
To limit abuse we would simply limit the amount of papers one can purchase to one a day.
A chance to get a rare and valuable item would keep people purchasing the paper day in and out.
A few ideas for the items would be
Gift certificates: Allows you to have credit at the store from which it originated
Pieces of a map: Once you have collected all the pieces the map would be assembled leading to treasure, a hidden city, a secret dungeon, etc etc
Trading cards: Few ideas here. Have a dueling mini card game for people to play in game, worked for Final Fantasy why not here? Besides our players need diversions while we work.
Collecting cards on famous and infamous historical PS figures/places/events/monsters have a shop that only will trade for cards, IE a collecting fanatic who has odd things possibly a ultra-rare items available to whomever collects an exhorbinate amount of cards.
The ideas could be combined, when dueling you risk cards and winning offers dual benifits improving your deck and getting more cards for trade in.
Pieces of spell/alchemy/smithing instructions: Instructions on how to create one of the listed jobs products
Miscellanious stuff: Hankerchief, Bubblegum,Paper etc. Items with no real value.

It doesn\'t really have to be a card game that can be played. I think trading cards would be more valuable because they hold more sentimental value and knowing the thought you have this good card. Also if you put a small gift in the newspaper maybe each newspaper would carry a different item maybe one would have a trading card/playing card and another would have a piece of jewelry to add more variety but then again it would be easier just to keep everything the same.
I think the newspaper is going to make the most money because of the guild advertisments because everyone could see who they are.

If the newspaper idea is really excellent, having a card game IN the game is something you can PERHAPS expect far away in the development, probably really hard to do.
But there are some great ideas in this topic, keep writing ppl, we watch your wishes ;)

alright what do newspapers usually contain... obituaries! could the server keep a running log of all creatures and PCs killed? And possibley give the results of duels?

wouldn\'t it be hard to keep track of all those statistics, I mean the newspaper would be a book more than a newspaper if it had that much stuff in it.

not really - just have it give the monster\'s name and the number killled beside it - another mmorpg called Tibia has this info displayed on their website - but I dont know why it couldnt be done ingame

hmm I think I remember what your talking about, I played Tibia also, but I think the stats what your talkning about should go in the Library.

this is a great thread to save devs work we could make it a e-mail newsletter. and just have the people pay 1 person in the game then split it with the newsletter people.
i love the card ideas

I dont think each city merits it\'s own newspaper, maybe each level... or I suppose the best thing would be each kingdom... but that\'s alot of programming and the devs would never swear themselves to something that complex... lest they be held to their promises

ya I think it\'ll probably just be a global newspaper, every newspaper would be the same throughout the world of planeshift.

it\'s way too early to worry about cost I\'m afraid. that will depeend on everything else in the game\'s cost. And the ease of getting money. AKA: inflation - people may not believe this but many games face inflation or deflation problems (usually inflationin action games like Diablo 2 and defaliton in more social/imaginary roleplay games) - Games take on virtual economies and the price of the newspaper should certainly varie with the economy (as would all other prices) - these prices could be altered by the devs as the game progresses.
