Title: Easy quick lag fix for Linux
Post by: Kluger on July 29, 2003, 10:43:46 am
I found that most of the time my computer was pausing, it was stat\'ing or grep\'ing a file, so here\'s a quick lag fix that not only got rid of my most recent serious lag but made it faster than it had ever been before.  It also allowed me to recover my broken characters.  I haven\'t even had any memory leaks since doing it.

Before starting psclient, go into your planeshift directory (usually ~/my_planeshift) and execute \"chmod 777 * -R\" to give everyone all permissions to all files in all subdirectories there.  (Remember, don\'t do this anywhere other than the planeshift folder, as you might break things or create security holes. If you are running as a user as opposed to root, it\'s pretty difficult to break anything, although you may leave your files accessible by other users who may have accounts on your computer.)

I told another player on PS, and he noticed a difference (though I can\'t remember his name).  Please post here and let me know how it does for you (as well as all the relevant info, such as what Linux distro, whether using the release or CVS, etc).

(Edit: Eww, I made punctuation mistakes!)

(Edit 2: Ooh, editing bumps?)

Thats amazing.  I don\'t use linux, but I\'m sure this would really helpful to those that do.

After trying it out for a while more, it seems that it\'s not a very common problem.  it happens more in Red Hat 9 than in Red Hat 8.0.

Also, after trying Red Hat 9 a bit longer, I\'ve come to the conclusion that it\'s not mildly annoying to use and plagued with a few unresolved bugs.  I\'ve come to the conclusion that it\'s total garbage.  I strongly strongly recommend either Red Hat 8.0 or Gentoo 1.4 for Planeshift.  PS seems very difficult or impossible to install on virtually every other Linux out there.

Beg pardon? I had a very easy time of it  installing on SuSE 8.2 other than the Skinlex.yy bug on line 61 it was a piece of cake.

eh?  I\'ve got SuSE 8.2, and I\'ve been trying and trying to get it to work...

Is there a thread on the forums with information on getting it to work in other distros?  I\'d figured it was practically impossible to do.  :P

if there isn\'t, perhaps it would be good to add that information to the Switch to Linux thread, zaphar...
