Title: Implementation of Klyros flying ability
Post by: Shiyar on August 28, 2003, 10:45:31 pm
I personally am planning to start a male Klyros character once the race has been implemented.  I understand that this may take a bit due to their flying ability; here is my suggestion on how to accomplish that.

Tapping the jump button should cause the character to jump normally.  Tapping it again in midair should result in the Klyros character flapping his/her wings and gaining a little bit of altitude.  There should be a limit of perhaps five such \"double jumps\", so that the character could jump, then tap the button at the top of each successive jump to gain altitude.  To glide, simply hold down the button and the character would glide in the direction they were facing.

Finally, the jumps should be able to be used as needed, so a character could jump, flap, flap again and glide, then flap up to three more times to make it up to a ledge.  This would allow for more control over flight.

Overall, such a system would be relatively simple to implement, easy to use, and easy to learn.

Just something I hope the team looks into.  Thanks.

Yeah but you better be givin\' the Enkidukai some natural bonuses in climbing and jumping then too...

I\'m planning on being one 2, I\'ve been wondering how it\'s gonna work.

yeah, and maybe if they have something that increases their endurance they could get bonus flaps so you could go higher; the only thing is that the glide should have very LITTLE degrade.

and by degrade i mean how fast you fall if you\'re gliding. it should also be possible to \"ride up drafts\" so you could technically glide from point A to point B over a forest using the updrafts.

up drafts could be generated near cliff faces, hot areas (hot air rises, enough hot air can float something, like a hot air balloon) like volcanos and maybe there could be \"down drafts\" as well; these would be the exact opposite of up drafts.
 ;)

just alittle more depth to a really sweet idea.

I dunno about drafts because that would require an extra layer of programming :P  But gliding is definately a must because you dont want to drop 10 feet for wevery time that you are pressing the jump/flap wings button :D

i also think that klyros should be able to fly ...or at least glide a bit ...but no idea, how it should actually work in the game

oh, yea, we enkidukkai (and also other races) deffinetly need something as neat as klyros have flying :]

Klyros don\'t fly. They jump like everyone else, yet if they flap their wings (probably implemented as rapidly pressing the jump button), they can jump longer because of the fact that they have wings.

Edit: This is true, and it will be so.

Yuh, so they can double jump/triple jumb or whatever, and then glide slowly down again. They have to be able to glide or they\'ll suffer from fall damage.

well if you read what we said you would see that that is what we were speculating that it would be :D

Unless there has been an unannounced change Kylros can fly.

For those of you who were saying Enkidukai and/or other races should get equivalent bonuses, you\'ll notice from Darkmoon\'s post that Klyros CAN\"T WEAR HEAVY ARMOR.  That\'s a big enough disadvantage to balance the whole flying/gliding thing.

And I\'m glad to see so much positive feedback.  Can\'t wait to start my Klyros character.  Thanks for all the posts, guys!

I don\'t know if heavy armour is all that desirable, myself.  Unless you invest lots of skill points in it it will just slow you down.  (Yes, I know your defence will be far stronger, but what use is that when you can\'t move fast enough to close on a lightly armoured enemy archer?)   ?(

Shiyar, I think your ideas for the flying controls are pretty good, and they would certainly be pretty easy to learn.   :))

I wonder if Kylros will be able to hover?

Enkidukai should be able to jump higher and climb better than other races, although obviously that would be much more difficult if they were wearing heavy armour, so it\'s still fair.

sorry, gron ...and thanks for reminding me (us) about the info on the planeshift pages ...must have slipped my mind  ...the skills on the planeshift pages are (last time i checked) really fairly distributed.

yea, i always imagined gron as the old silent misterious man in the corner of the tavern ...always listening, without being noticed, but very seldom speaking ...although when he does it\'s mostly true and smart ...yea, a bit like aragron in lotr :]

Well fly for short time suggests being able to fly to a certain height or for a certain time, after all, the pictures of them have really skinny raggedy wings. What about a stamina bar, you could fly until it went down, then you would have to stand still for a while for it to recharge. Gliding wouldn\'t decrease it, so you couldn\'t use it up in the air and then die. Plus, you could train and make the stamina bar bigger, or go down slower.
