Wizard guy... Or anyone else that can kill people in the most violent and painful way possible.  I\'ll also pick up some crafting skills, if it doesn\'t bog down my character too much...

What ever class/skill it takes to become a sort of swiss army knife for spells.  What? did you forget your sword let me conjure one for you.  Need to attack faster, poof there you go.  Need to be invisible, poof there you go.  What your dead? poof there you go, now your alive again.  Your room is not clean? poof there you go!

Ok maybe that last spell is a bit too powerfull.  I am sure it will be nerfed when the game goes into final.

Title:

Um, yes. Everything to do about a necromancer is evil. A necromancer who isn\'t is sorta disgrace to necromancers. (No offence to wannabe good necromancers) A necromancer who is evil is hated by most non necromancers. (See every fantasy RPG game and fantasy book in history.) Necromancy is the fobidden magic art. E.g. Forbidden by other magic users.

You just said there are no evil necromancers, and now say there are.. :P So there are good necromancers, and their craft doesn\'t have to be evil since there is black necromancy and white... (black being the animating of the dead, and white being healing and the like) so being a necromancer doesn\'t necessarily make you evil..
Title:
Post by: Xordan on September 06, 2003, 08:14:02 pm
lol, a good necromancer isnt really a necromancer, as u are supposed to have to be evil to cast.  And lol, u should look up necromancy. Their is no such thing as white necromancers. Necromancy is the art of raising the dead as eternal zombie skeleton servants, not healing. If u want to heal, be a cleric. :)
(btw, as this game is roleplay u can call urself a good/neutral necromancer if ye wish, it\'ll add a bit of strangeness into the game. :) )

\'Um, yes. Everything to do about a necromancer is evil. A necromancer who isn\'t is sorta disgrace to necromancers. (No offence to good necromancers)\'

ahem, quickly changed that one, lol. :) :)

Ever played D&D??? You would notice that most healing spells have necromancy as their governing magical ability... And I\'ve never played any game where you have to be evil in order to cast necromancy spells... And if you translate necromancy into danish (which is my main language) it means \"?ndemaning\" (Summoning of spirits/communing with spirits) which is also something necromancers are able to in lots of games, and fantasy settings...

And I stand by the point that necromancy doesn\'t necessarily have to have anything to do with \"evil\"..

I\'ll practice the skills necessary to become a great merchant - and sell all you others swords and wands and potions ... prime retail locations, high-rises, franchises, security, etc, etc.   :)

and when my empire collapses I\'ll be a bum and share a bottle with Kiern.
Title:
Post by: Xordan on September 07, 2003, 12:35:08 am
I didnt know that, I dont play D&D much. All I know is that games like NWN and baldurs gate which use D&D rules have Cleric as the healing class. You cant heal at all if you choose necromancy.
Also how come in alot of RPG\'s (for example Lionheart) if you choose to be a necromancer you are seen as evil, and also you are scorned by other mages for practising the dark arts? Maybe this just varies in different games, no really niether of us are right or wrong. lol
Title:
Post by: druke on September 07, 2003, 12:56:07 am
necromancy is two sides of one coin, both healing, and renewal of life

good nec-heals and brings person back to life(soul in tact)
the \"healer\"

bad nec-(drains and brings person back(although generally mindless like a zombie));
the typical \"necromany

it all matters on wether r not you are reffering to the general class type or the school fo magic like divination and divinative magic, two different things yet sound much alike

edit: i know... i\'m good like that
Title:
Post by: Xandria on September 07, 2003, 02:11:28 am
I\'m going to be a merchant, though since I\'ll be selling magic supplies I\'ll probably be a wizard and an alchemist as well, and probably a bit of crafting too (for making all those cool magical knick-knacks).

One of the reasons I think the devs choose to have no classes in planeshift are the class restrictions of other RPGs.  No restrictions, no titles, and no cleric can\'t use a sword stuff.  There are only different skills.  The more you practive the greater your skills - the greater the skills the better you can do stuff.

Go ahead mage pick up that sword healer just try not to cut yourself cause you have had no time to practice with swords - all you time has been spent trying to become a better healer.

So Xodron, be as evil as you want - he he he

Title:

I know that you can choose to be anything you want, which is one thing which makes planeshift different. I suppose you can follow any way of magic(s) so You can be good at everything. Btw, I was reffering to the class Necromancer, not the School. Sorry if i confused you. :)

Check pg 190 of the D&D players handbook. All healing spells are Conjuration not Necromancy. Necromancy has nothing to do with healing.

must be the new d&d then... Haven\'t played that much...

Although I fail to see the logic in conjuration magic being the governing magic for healing...

But who cares about this anymore :D :P it\'s really just a stupid discussion as to whether a necromancer is allowed to be evil or not.. it\'s all up to the character who plays him/her whether or not you wish to be evil... if people around you see you as evil, even though you aren\'t, then the people are naive and pitiful... :P

Haste of housewife spell  (10 mana)
Eagle Eyes of Mother-in-law (10 mana)

then summon...
Soap and Water Elemental (150 mana)

and finnally cast...
Whirling Wind of cleaning (60 Mana)

Total cost
 250 mana points

I\'ll start out with some sort of a Rogue class, mainly fighter style. All this fuss about stealth and thievery isn\'t me. I\'m dead clumsy. :P I\'ll bring along Alchemy, which will help me identify and make potions for myself and my friends. The reason I choose Rogue Alchemist, and not Mage Alchemist, would be that when I have a firm grip as a Rogue fighter-style thing, I can start focusing on magic, and I have something to protect myself with, should my magics suddenly go *pling .. twirl-twirl-twirl .. poof*. It\'s bad, but it can happen. :D

I\'m sure that pouring down a few potions wouldn\'t hurt too much, if - of course - the treasure is big enough. :P However, if you meet big treasures, you\'ve slain big monsters, and for that, you would need friends, so space shouldn\'t be that much of a problem. :P

Variable Knight:

I want to be able to master all sorts of heavy weapons so that I can weild them as quickly as little knives.

But I want to be able to go to Heavy-Two Sword mode and the more serious Super-Ultra-Fast Two Short Sword or Dagger Mode.

I think that is called a light knight? I just know they have to come out with swallows....That\'s it, we need a weapon forum.

The weight should also determine how people use the lighter characters, for example, Heavy Lancer Kyros? Giant Axe Dwarves?

Being able to master one\'s weapon to the point of ridiculous speed/damage/defensivness is going to be so darn fun.

Will someone master the golden mug, please?

As an alt character I would like to be a Kran Brawler.

Shadowmancer
  Necromancer
    nekromanteia
       manteia

Manteia= divination= The art or act of foretelling future events or revealing occult knowledge by means of augury or an alleged supernatural agency. (dictionary.com)

Derwoodian translation:
Shadowmancer:  forteller of the future by looking at shadows of the past.  Not quite as evil as a Necromancer :)

I shall be a Teacher who goes forth and kicks butt only to come back to teach what I have seen then go out again.

I have always liked the thought of a mixture between a Rouge and Ranger type character.  One who has the best qualities of each... combined with the skills of a Teacher... oh, yeah.  Plato the Defender or some such.

I cant make a new character to start this type of Player but if there is a swipe of everyones account next update ill make this dude. I wanna make an animal trainer! It would be such a cool job! I would use a whip (another thing i would like in the game) So my animal trainer would be my class i model after and my job! Hehe flying people around on a Ptedaur would be awesome for money..
Title:
Post by: Draklar on October 26, 2003, 05:23:40 pm
but animal trainer isn\'t a class, it\'s job. Just like weapon smith and so on...
Almost every class could be animal trainer.
Well necromancer couldn\'t, you know... scaring animals by their appearance and stuff like that ;)
Title:
Post by: Davis on October 26, 2003, 07:55:58 pm
You and your prejudice against necromancers... I\'m sure they can look good when they want to. Or at least normal. And they don\'t need to train animals anyway, just make a zombie one.
Title:
Post by: Draklar on October 26, 2003, 08:15:43 pm
what??? i don\'t remember when i said i have something against necromancers!
but yeah, necromancer can look normal, as long as he won\'t develop his necromancy skills ;)
And notice that i said \"and stuff like that\". Even if necromancer will use some potions to keep normal appearance, still animals will be feeling that there\'s something wrong with that guy.

You know... animal zombies tend to turn into dust after some time, and they aren\'t as helpful as living ones.

Lemme help you re-think that for you... A mage with armor is not good. It decreases movement, and mages need to move - sometimes REALLY fast. As for a magical staff... well, to be honest, I doubt it\'ll be easy to just find a magical staff in the middle of nowhere, but a regular one could do very well. I even think one of them martial arts are for staves, but I\'m not sure though. However, the dagger thing might be good, as daggers are likely to give more damage than staves, unless your staff-fighting is much greater, and you hit your foe in the face all the time (ouch). So, what you would do is :

\"I will aspire to become a great Arcane Mage, who draws power from the Azure and Dark Ways to serve my evil ways. I\'ll equip myself with light clothing, and use a staff for fighting, as well as a dagger.\" :)

Then again, some people do not appreciate me helping *points at Venge*, so if you don\'t like my suggestions, just don\'t remember them after you\'ve read them. :D

Paladin here. Always liked the idea of fighting and healing, with heavy armor and heavy swords! Always hated how over zealous they seem to be, and how they are usually one of the hardest characters to play

PLEASE dont make paladins like the paladins in EQ. They were HORRIBLE at EVERYTHING. There aren\'t many games that do a Paladin justice (lol sorry for pun).

Paladins should be more then capable fighters with average healing, not Minor healing. Paladin spells in EQ were a joke. Heal for 90 hp when I have 1800 hp.

Sorry for getting off topic, just like the class but want to see them done right in a game that seems to be being made right :)

stealth    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (stlth)
n.
The act of moving, proceeding, or acting in a covert way.
The quality or characteristic of being furtive or covert.
Archaic. The act of stealing.

I think I would try and base it around the character that I used with friends in D&D, the Baldur\'s Gates, NWN etc.

She will be a rogue, but focus more on stealth skills than thieving, and be a mster with a light sword such as a rapier. It\'s a very enjoyable class to RP.

Silence does not mean stealth, nor vice versa.

i will be a klyros healer, wizard, and merchant, with light armour (obviously since klyroses cant wear heavy) and throwing daggers (the most sophisticated weapon in my opinion (but i havent seen many weapons so no wonder)), reason being merchant is good for getting money, healing is good if you get hurt and last but not least everybody knows wizards dont backstab, if you ever enrage a wizard you wouldnt have a back to stab :]

what is the difference of a mage and wizard?
Title:
Post by: Thardin on March 15, 2004, 06:17:19 pm
I changed my mind about what kind of character I want to play.
I will first focus on long and or short sword. When ranged combat is implemented I will be a fletcher (making bows). I will then become what DnD rules would call a ranger.
I know it is not very RP like, switching after a certain time, but unfortunately it is the only way to really enjoy the game imo.
Stalking the woods, alone for a long time. I like the quiteness of the outland.

I know that this argument has basically died, but why do people seem to think that necromancer automatically equals evil??? It\'s like for some people it becomes an algebraic equation.

if you are a necromancer, your alignment shows in the way that you handle the spirits you conjure.

as an evil necromancer, you bend the spirits to your will, forcing them to do as you wish.

there comes however, the case of the tribal shaman, speaking with the spirits of the dead, using necromantic means to communicate with the dead. If your village is attacked, is it evil to plead with the dead to rise up against those who would sack, burn and pillage your homeland, rape your women and enslave you? I think not, you are merely looking toward the good of your people.

I\'ve played more than one good necromancer, but the DMs I\'ve played under always gave me an xp penalty because I couldn\'t \"force\" the spirits to do what I wanted... personally I would think that the spirits would trust me and do as I wished willingly.

as for this game, I\'m not sure, something like an assassin I suppose, lots of stealth and backstabbing, maybe some magic, not sure bout that, probably healing spells if I do

well almost every game i play that give\'s me the choice i am a dwarven cleric/ fighter heavy on the fighter usually two weapon (axe and hammer) style with just enough cleric in me  to get me thru sticky undead situation\'s.
it\'s a hard combination to play in the beginning of most game\'s  but when you start to get up in experience your char become\'s very powerfull in hand and mind  :D

but as for planeshift i think i am leaning toward\'s mercenary/weapon smith hiring out to whoever can pay  8)

i agree with tigerwilde i don\'t think calling apon the spirit\'s of your ancester\'s is an evil act but it would be considere\'d necromancy would it not ?

sliping in and out of trees and ambushing my enemies from above, exploring every where i can  no magical abilities that is what friends are for:D  also retelling of mine and others adventures to the comunity at the local tavern .... for a nominal fee of course:D

To be exact, a necromancer doesn\'t necessarily have to conjure spirits and talk to the dead, and raise skeletons. Yes, one part of necromancy revolves around the dead and evil things like that, however the other part of necromancy lets them to exactly as all other mage classes. They can heal, they can grant strength, they can protect. However, they just do it in a slightly diffrent way. The basics of necromancy spellcasting is by taking something from someone, and then giving it to someone else. Thus, a necromancer can take a part of someone else\'s (or his own) life force, and heal another person with it, just as well as he can take the lifeforce of another and heal himself. It\'s not what he can, that makes him evil, it\'s what he uses his powers for that makes him evil (or good).

If people let the necromancer take their life to bring someone else back from the dead, then the necromancer is doing as person\'s wish, not something bad. However, should a necromancer kill someone by stealing the person\'s soul, giving the necromancer increased strength and what-not, then the necromancer is evil. I\'m sure that is very easy to understand. :)

This isn\'t necessarily how PlaneShift works, it\'s just the simple basics of spellcasting, and according to these, any spellcaster can do anything, no matter which area he is focused on. A white mage can cause death and destruction as much as a necromancer, he will just do it in a diffrent way, and it will be much harder. A satanist can bless someone, however it is much more difficult from him than for a priest to give a blessing. What is easy for some people is very difficult for others, but it can be done.

I think I\'ll wanna become something that allows me to use the great charisma that my character will have ..
So the choices are:

- Bard / Madrigal
- Priest / Cleric
- Paladin

I don\'t think I\'ll like to fight so the last goes down
I don\'t wanna be something religious for any reason
Right now Madrigal could be the best choice to be a sort of spy, a diplomat or even a merchant ..
See ya!
( P.S. : I hope the game will come out soon )

Sigh. There is no class called Graverobber to model after I haven\'t seen it in any other game, maybe a subclass or kit, so I don\'t think you could really call it a class. If you are a thief, you could do some grave robbing...

Unique as in one-of-a-kind.
A graverobber could be a class.
Quote
Taken from Dictionary.com
A set, collection, group, or configuration containing members regarded as having certain attributes or traits in common; a kind or category

Therefore, technically anything can be a class...
For example I could fashion my character after a panhandler (begger) or perhaps a dancer (dancing does not have to be a profession).

Im going to have one charecter for a very long time.  It will be a lemur specializing in the dark way.  I will be almost a pure mage carrying only a staff as my weapon.
Im not 100% sure on what job to chose yet but im between a Healer and Pharmisist.  My goal is to use all my skill points to increase my summons and dark way magic then to use my job points for healing.  So Ill have devastating attacks and will be able to heal myself :).

If I ever make another account it will be a knigh who is all strength, speed, and endurance.
Title:
Post by: Fiegmund on October 09, 2004, 09:23:29 am
My main will most likely be a Nolthrir ranger type.

Medium armor, high bow skills, high weapon skills.  Spear would be my favorite, sword comes 2nd.  Though dual-wielded daggers would probably be more efficient, with higher dex for the ranging...but I like that too

I\'ll probably put spare points in climbing and lockpicking, and a little bit in one martial arts line, if possible and if it offers the effects I\'m looking for (self-buffs, mainly)

An alt could be a Kran meatshield/skullbasher.  Heavy armor, and a huge warhammer or 2-handed axe.  All bent on charging at the enemies and taking most of the hits instead of your teammates...while hearing the sweet sound of your enemies\' bones getting crushed.

Or a Klyros mage, red and crystal ways, light armor, and a staff.

And what would the skill setup be for a god? You would need massive magic AND virtual immortality. That means maxing out magic and mental stats AND maxing out body development and endurance and heavy armour and anti.magic etc. And you would have to be BEST in everything of this to be accepted as a god or people will just laugh at you. :)

But, well... I understand that it was a joke.

Cohdra, just so as not to disappoint you, this thread refers to classes people will model after, not choose.
There are no actual classes in PS, the reason being there is high emphasis on roleplaying, so not everyone in the world will be a fighter, mage etc...
To become a \'warrior monk\', you would just take skills in the martial arts schools, not choose the class monk.
Sorry if you knew this.

And NO not because i\'ll be doing mostly \"bad\" things \'n fighting, i see myself more as an explorer of sorts. It\'s the profession/role that suits me the best simply because i like it (somewhat general profession).

I\'ve been playing this kind of character ever since i started playing AD&D computer games since \"Eye of the Beholder\"!

I\'m hoping Planeshift does not mimic EQ or similar games.  I would like to see a different experience.   For instance, if you were a human you could start off as a warrior and maybe turn into a ranger or even cleric.  Or be an elf-type and start as a wizard and become a necromancer or shaman.  I\'m just hoping for a different style of play experience.

As for me, I will probably start as a magic user of some type.  Then create a warrior type.

im most likely going with a heavy armor, longsword & shield paladin. if i decide not to though, i might make more of a duel weilding, medium aremor hunter.
what do you think would be a good race for a paladin? a Ylian? or maybe a kran? i want to have some decent healing powers, but still be able to hold my own out guiding the way for the common folk, maybe a dungeon crawl, possible mining.
also, what kind of rideable animals will be implemented once they are ready? more fantasy like creatures, or will we see some horses?

well if u want to have healing powers i wouldnt go with a kran 8th limit for magic, i bet playing as a paladin would be pretty kool.

ive usually always been a paladin first in rpg\'s. i just cant stay away from shiny armor! do you know if we will be able to add stats to the stats on the main races page like in the MB creation to further customize?

I\'m going to be a wizard, probably not a pure mage but rather a warlock or something like that.  Magic in planeshift is going to be cool.

Well I was going to go with my typical Mage type, but seeing as we arent restricted in what we do, perhaps I will go with a dual wielding rogue with some magical ability.
 (Vlad Taltos series anyone???)

Post by: Mydah on January 24, 2005, 07:25:31 pm
I\'ve always, no matter what the game, gravitated toward the character who hides in shadows, works by night, unseen by all. An acrobat catburgler who climbs in the second story window, uses a rope to cross silently over the guards in the great hall, and picks the locks not into the treasury but into the Lord\'s study to steal the war plans. The next week those plans are foiled by the opposing army and the rogue walks away with a heavy purse.

Always tended to one of three classes ranger, rogue or mage in previous incarnations

mage / alchemist  here is attractive

...though becoming a pure mage is a stretch with the current state of the world

so how about mage who mines a lot, and kills critters with a weapon to get PP?

Keep up the great work devs.  The world is getting better all the time!

Current primary character:  War Sage.  Going to focus on the Red way to aid patrons in battle, should it be required, and dabble in the other ways.  Probably focus on defense more than anything else.

Intended future character, if they ever have a decent-looking model for it:  Red Way+Dark Way+Stealth+Light Weapons.  Red way will be the main focus.  Bugger\'ll torch foes from the shadows, and sneak off in the smoke.  So, essential, Pyro Ninja.  Muhaha.

I am, at heart, a Mage.  EVERY character I play leans toward that style of design in some way.  I\'ve even converted Fighter characters to have some traits of the mystic.

Cleric / Healer of any sort.

This is the first type of character I make in any RPG based game I play. It\'s always handy haveing a heal spell / ability when learning new games.

I have pretty much a samekind of idea what I am/will be.  My plan is to be a rogue with some fighter characteristics and skills. And maybe in the future there will be some mage skills also, who knows? ;)

Indeed. Even though i dont plan on having a \"healer\" type char i think a lot of people would like a nice healing glyph. Imho this would encourage partying and would in turn make combat a bit more fun for some.

Not sure was this ment for me also, but since I have pretty similar plans with Drog, I\'ll also answer.. ;)

Of course my plan is to be good in rogue skills and everything related in it. But on the otherhand I want also to have some fighting/casting skills which might help me occassionally to be a rogue and to survive in the world of PS.

i think i will be priest based, probably use staves if they exist in the game, but mostly whatever gives me the best stat bonuses (in true caster fashion)i just came from wow, where the priest is VERY usefull, as you can be either shadow, and do LITERALLY the most dmg in the game (short time periods only, lol) or be the most effective healer in the game, in this game definately going healer if i can, dunno yet, only at 26% downloaded, lol

Blacksmith (armors and all kinds of weapons, but specialized in swords, axes and hammers) and fighter (have to check my merchandise\'s quality before I sell it, right?). A stubborn hard-to-deal-with blacksmith who values his work above all else, in look for warriors worthy of his weapons and will not sell his stuff to just anyone.

As far as following a generic class.  Vay\'s a rogue.  Stealthy and agile, pretty much sums it up :P

As for how I\'ll RP him (which may also affect the class) He\'s pretty much an ex-assassin.  His old guild is trying to hunt him down for kidnapping a girl instead of killing her :P
