Post by: Chradraf on September 16, 2003, 02:38:53 am
hi, i just made a 1337 blue demon-thingy-guy (just downloaded ps today, plz excuse the lack of knowledge of the races\' names) skin, and took some screenshots, but i didnt see where they went.  wondering if someone could tell me where to find my screenshots?

Umm.... as far as I know you can only take shots one-at-a-time, and only via alt-printscreen which puts it on clipboard.

screenshots get saved to the clip board
to see them copy them to an art program like paint
and ask the devs to make a file where screenshots are saved so you don\'t have to save each individual one as you go along.

thanks for telling me about screenshots, i took one of my cool new skin.  now i need to know how to post pictures in the forum.

also wondering if there are any modeling programs for planeshift out? i used to make my own counterstrike models, and it would be fun in planeshift, too

I would suggest signing up on some free web space somewhere.  I use brinkster ( http://www.brinkster.com ) to store files ( like screen shots ) that I want to share with others.  It does not allow \'hot linking\' ( you cannot have the picture shown on a different page you can only place a link to your brinkster site with the image on it ).  But it is free and you get a good amount of space and bandwidth.  There are many others like this as well.

I know the newer version of Crystal Space allows you to take screen shots so we may add this feature in the next version to allow easy creation of screen shots ( Any volunteers to do this for us? )

At the moment the artists use a mix of Maya and 3DSMax.  We will ( at some point ) have to develop our own tools so that people can help contribute to the game by building new models/levels. But this is *really* ( I mean really ) hard to do and we would rather work on the core of the game then work on extra tools ( some may say this is bad but we make do ).

(don\'t make space in [/ img] though)

i\'m not sure about modeling programs, but maybe Maya?

devs = developers

[edit: guess i was little too late :P]

What I suggest is to make sure the file name has no spaces in it.   Once you upload it, it should be:

 www12.brinkster.com/chradraf/theNameOfTheFileYouUploaded.

is there any way to get my hands on some models that are to possibly used for the game? I wanted to try my hands at skinning but dont want the pressure of being a dev nor do i have anyhting online to show off my skill (if I have any) to even become a dev. If i could get a couple of models to work on than I would be glad to submit them to the dev. team and if its any good than I would love to go part/fulltime on it.

As acraig said, you can\'t use [img] tags with a brinkster account.  You\'ll need to use [url] tags.

So, the correct url I believe would be www12.brinkster.com/chradraf/screenshot.bmp, ithat is f you uploaded it to your root directory on the server.  Also, one note, you may wish to save your screens as jpgs or gifs, as they are much smaller, and, I believe, more compatible.

[edit]
It doesn\'t work, are you sure you uploaded your shot?

Your index page must be named exactly: index.htm (NOT html) for it to show up as default.

I suggest you use the uploader at pixas.mine.nu
It works great, and its rather easy to use.

You misunderstood, I\'m afraid.

When you start a brinkster account, it automatically puts a default index.html in your root which says \"Site is Currently Under Construction\".  Your site is setup, it just put that default page as a placeholder.

Now, unless you know HTML (Which really isn\'t that difficult to learn), you\'re probably not going to want to link to a page, you\'ll more likely wish to link to the picture directly.  So, after you upload your file, don\'t goto www12.brinkster.com/chradraf, as this will bring you to that default placeholder.  Assuming you uploaded it to root, use the following URL (as acraig said):

www12.brinkster.com/chradraf/PICTURE_NAME_HERE

Naturally, replace the PICTURE_NAME_HERE with the actual filename of your picture.

Perhaps you can just tell us the name of your picture (ex. screenshot.bmp), and we can connect the dots.

what kinda tools are we talking about here?
Is it that hard to make a converter from 3dmax file into your models?  I know it probably requires knowledge of 3dmax script, so I don\'t know how hard it is.

If you want to make like a world creator that deals with triggers/placing units/making quests/terrain, now that\'s hard :)

Those scripts are already done and in use.  Vengenace himself wrote a maya -> CS converter so doing that is not so hard.

This is what I mean by custom tools.  There is no way in hell we could create an application like 3dsmax in any useable form and there is no reason.  3Dsmax/Maya are written to create models so there is no need to try to duplicate their work.  Things like map creation/entity creation/triggers etc are pretty PlaneShift specific so we need to develop tools for that.
