Any of you play Magic: The Gathering?
If you follow the story line, you may notice the similarities between Karn, the big metal guy, and the Kran, the big rock people. Not much difference in the names or appearence, is there?
Anybody else notice that?
-
If there is of course some similitaries between the names and the appearence, i really don\'t see any similitaries between the stories.
As far as I know, Krans (who are a race) were created by error when Talad tries to create a race like Laanx did with the Lemurs.
But Karn, Silver Golem, (who is legendary) was created by Urza as a part of the \"Heritage\" (name in French, I don\'t know if it the same in English)

sorry but I cant see any resemblance but the name :-)
-
Actually, I think that they are quite similar... although, I dont think that this is a problem.
-
They are very similar in appearance, if you ask me.. But they are still made of different materials, so they aren\'t exactly the same..
Oh, and elscouta, I think it is called \"Legacy\" in english... Or at least my \"brothers war\" book says so :P:P
-
\"Heritage\" doesn\'t look a so english word ;-)
-
Kran - Karn
Planeshift - Planeshift
hmmm... ;)
-
I would really like to have a DEVs opinion on this... :(
-
Bah, they have probably take some inspiration...
But is it really different to using dwarfs/elfs/dragons?
Not really. And the two games are too differents to risk a lawsue. I hope... :-/
And planeshifter have left the world of Magic since 2 year
-
Yep, I was just saying...what a coincidence :P
-
actualment, heritage veut dire la meme chose en anglais
-
French, right?
-
that looks like french to me but i could be mistaken i think its definately a western european language
-
Hmm... I don\'t think they look too much similar, but anyways...
Kran - Karn Planeshift - Planeshift
Yes, that can be similar, and you could even guess that maybe someone took inspiration. I am not saying this is the case, since I don\'t believe it is, but if this would be the case, you would be surprised to know who did it, since the first incarnations of Planeshift (with those names and concept art too of course) existed and were public before expansions to other games were out.

actualment, heritage veut dire la meme chose en anglais
OK dril, forgive me if I get it wrong, but I\'d like to test out my French...
\"Actually, heritage is said the same in English.\"
I dunno if that\'s right, but whatever.
I had noticed the \"Planeshift\" name thing when I did a search for Planeshift on google. I got all kinds of Magic-card sites. I hadn\'t known about the Karn/Kran thing. I agree that it isn\'t all that big of a deal though.

Yes...I know...I\'m messing with the new people
-
well I\'d like to point out that conceptually Planeshift began coming together in 1992 (correct me if I\'m wrong it was some obscenely old number when I was still a weeee munchkin and didn\'t have (much less want) internet access). So just like the previous MTG discussions it doesn\'t matter since Planeshift outdates them.
-
...and boonet just said that

1992 is anything but cool

Id say as far as numbers go its at least relatively cool
far better than 4432

When did they invent the Kran though? MTG came out in 1993. The planeshift expansion came out in 2001 I think. Karn was 1996 maybe? Whenever the Weatherlight expansion was.
-
It doesn\'t really matter anyway, they\'re 2 completely different things. Firstly, Karn is one artifact creature and part of the Legacy; the Kran is an entire living race. Secondly, Karn is made out of silver; the Kran are made out of Silicon. Thirdly, Karn is a very strict pacifict (following the accidental murder of a child, I believe.) And finally, Karn was actually fairly intelligent, I believe; the Kran on the other hand... Although, much of these points were already hit on in the past.
Anyway, did Urza actually make Karn? Weren\'t some parts of the Legacy (i.e. the Weatherlight) not constructed by Urza, but merely collected by him? Its been some time since I knew all these useless facts about M:tG\'s setting, so I may be mistaken.
By the way, what was the name of that goblin? Started with a \'S\', I think...
-
Squee was the goblin cabin hand.
And Urza did design the Weatherlight; however, the actual building was done by Multani.
Urza built Karn, but he didn\'t know how to make a mind that advanced. All Phyrexians have a \"heart\" in Phyrexia that contains their mind. Urza used the heart of a Phyrexian outcast named Xantcha which he found the first time he tried to destroy Phyrexia to give Karn his intelligence.
Karn was originally built to be used with the time machine Urza created, when he figured out that silver wasn\'t destroyed when going through the machine.
I have read every MTG book from the original storyline except Apocolypse. No, I am not a MTG nerd.

The brothers war series are the best MTG novels IMO...
-
Jeff Grubb is the best MTG author. Unfortunately, he has to spend a lot of time writing D&D rulebooks (though, of course, that means the D&D rulebooks come out great).
Jeff Grubb only wrote one book in the Brother\'s War series: The Brother\'s War. Which is the best book in the series? The Brother\'s War, first book.
However, Jeff Grubb also wrote the three Ice Age books. Not coicidentally, these are some of the best MTG books.
In conclusion, Ice Age cycle is cooler than Brother\'s War series because Jeff Grubb wrote more of the books.
[EDIT: Maybe I am an MTG nerd an never noticed it...]
