Title: Well I brainstormed for a sec and....
Post by: Kixie on October 12, 2003, 01:00:43 am
Well heres an idea, i just had (dunno if this is taken... please dont hurt me...) I know this game is supposed to branch out from other games via less npcs and more power to the people in which i react \"RIGHT ON BROTHER!!!\"

but one thing  has not been adressed... If this game is an MMORPG which are usually all about groups of people going out fighting things, should we allow some sort of system for people to easier find other players for adventures. Let\'s say billy wants to slay dragon number one but he isnt strong enough to take him on by himself.

I myself have a number of sulutions like having an official tavern in each city for people to meet for adventures, or being able to hire NPC\'s for battle (which is hypocritical because i love the whole minimal npc thing)

but the best idea i can come up with is a forum or newspaper in the game where people can say \"drop party at dragons lair. warriors wanted. see PERSON111 at CERTAIN SPOT\" signed person111

how about it i think its original and a great idea. send your imput or your own suggestions on how drop parties should be formed.

I think it\'s been put in another thread, but I not sure. It\'s a good idea though.

Yeah Its a great idea, of course a dragon is nothing compared to me.  Maybe the forum would be a battle list posted in every tavern.

There should be \"Classifieds\"

Theres already Guilds and buddy systems and their will also be a party system for this. People can choose their own meeting place to gather a party not just taverns.

Hiring Npc for battles has been brought up before, ppl hated it.

The newspaper thing has been brought up more times than u can shake a big stick at.
As for a forum, what\'d u think ur posting on, this and kada\'s will be easy spots to find people. *prods the guild section*

i really like the newspaper idea. on the mud i frequently play (ancient anguish) there are 2 player-run newspapers which add a lot of depth to the game.

but since a newspaper needs real editing and story-writing, i don\'t think it would be the right means for people to find parties. if i want a group to go hunting i would want that right away, but as i said putting together a readable in-game paper takes at least a couple of days (a daily paper, although not impossible, would need LOTS of devoted people).

still merchants could use classifieds to advertise their shops, guilds to recruit new people, etc.

as i imagine it, the main part of the paper could consist of stories about memorable events, background stories about the history of the world, interviews with renowned heroes of the realm and such.

about the concern of the paper beeing flooded with classifieds, because of so many people playing: an ad mustn\'t be free of charge.

just my ideas :)

i really dont know what you mean that classifieds wouldnt be a great way to put toghether a drop party because in the classifieds it would probally show the date and time of when the post was put in. If there was a newspaper I predict it would be checked very often! When someone has completed a quest, run thier daily run for money (smithing, mining, flying pterodaurs), or just get bored they would check the newspaper. So since people would check it so often they would find new posts more and more. Also just to throw some spice into this lets make a scenario (i love doing this :D)

Billy can kill Giant level 62 very efficiantly due to a bonus in his sword (hypothetical but for some reason billy is good at killing giant level 62) Since he is so good at killing giant level 62 he finds that, maybe due to a quest or items given by giant level 62, people want to make parties in killing giant level 62 because they cannot do it alone. So billy reads the newspaper conserning a drop party to kill the giant level 62 and makes his money, thanks, items etc. Billy is now happy and makes living for short while killing giant level 62. P.S. the whole civilation of giant 62 is now extinct thanks to Billy.

So the point being, the newspaper would be a very good way to start drop parties or whatever you want to call them....

ah, now i see. the way you imagine the newspaper, would be more like an ingame forum. (i thought those two different ideas). as i understand in your kind of paper a char would go to an npc fill out a form with what he wants to put in the paper, pay for it, and all the papers in the world would instantaneously add the new classified ad for everyone to read as soon as it is written.

that would definitely work for finding parties, you\'re right.

the way i thought of a newspaper, was more in the way of a real newspaper, with stories and all. at least some other content than just forum-like messages, which would need editing and would therefore not be published in realtime.

what about using something like a pinboard in a tavern or the plaza to communicate like in a forum. with people putting up their notes, people being able to read them, and if they get too old they just fall off?

well i dont really know why the ingame forum can look and feel like a newspaper. Also i think it would be dumb if you had to pay to get ads in or to look at a paper. That would probally kill the whole paper idea because people would be so annoyed that everyone had to get a new issue every 2 seconds to check if a new post was in. But yeah i dont see why the ingame forum couldnt look like a newspaper, with newest posts in classifieds permenantly in the paper untill the player says so and the newest ones in front. Also the other stuff like stories in the game like.. \"temple crystal vault broken into\" could be new everytime. This would be because lots of people are desperate to contribute to the game! People would write stories and send them in and it would be cool. Just in case there werent new stories you would only change stuff that was new.

                                                        Peace and Love,

actually my point was NOT to use the newspaper for small notes like: \"lvl xy basher looking for mage to identify magical sword. meet at tavern at xx:yy o\'clock. will pay!\", but to use a pinboard at e.g. the plaza for that. i just don\'t really like the idea of a magically updated newspaper flooded with personal notes. but that\'s just me *shrugs*

but i\'d love to see a newspaper implemented, where there are mainly stories and such, as well as paid for classified ads like:\"tureg\'s armour shop. huge choice of high quality items at lowest prices in town. 3minutes walk from center plaza.\" or \"guild a announces that after hard negotiations we\'ve reached an agreement on a peace treaty with guild b. the war is over!\".

i just hijacked your newspaper idea and suggested the way i\'d like to see it implemented there. sorry ;)

ahh but those small little useless notes would add so much character to it.... all the little things like \"drop partyat edens\" or \"i like cheese\" would make the newspaper so charismatic, dont you thinK? It would kinda make the newspaper player run and not developer run. That way they can keep making updates and not have to make a newspaper everyday..

If there is going to be any type of newspaper, it should be a Stagmalite(sp)-wide or level-wide serious peice of journalism.

For example, a newb comes into the starting city and an NPC is set to shout at preset intervals:

\"Come get your FREE copy of the \'Ylaikum Newcomer\'!\"

And the poor-confused noob would walk up to the man and say \"Hello/Hi/(not wuzup)/Hey there/ /greet\" and the NPC would quickly respond with something like:

Don Quixote Tells You: \"Here is a free copy of the Ylaikum Newcomer, it gives you a few tips on roaming the first level, as well as the latest general news about happenings and events in the First Level.\"

This would be the \'noob sheets\' which would kinda update the newbs on the city, the major locations in the first level, the best place to start, general area of the shops, e.t.c.

This would change every week, but mostly just the recent news part. Not very in depth, but at least it is a start.

The fun part is the actual newspaper, What I call the \"Second Level Times\" (or Second Level Chronice, whatever) which would be written by a player as a job, or by a Dev who actually plays the game regularly (paradox?) maybe a job is better....anyways this player works like reporter and records the general events into an in-game article (or heck maybe in the News Section of the Planeshift Home page) which the players can quickly read before playing or heading off to a party. This would be useful because then the player may get a tip on how to beat certain types of monsters, or the economy or the avalibility of transportation in the level.

Basically one person to a level (with a maximum of the 5th level?)

On the subject of a classifieds section, There should just be a Moderately-sized board at the tavern, maybe outside that when examined, showed some short messages that players can leave from time to time. Profanity will be automatically filtered, but I think an admin can take care of most at once so automation shouldn\'t be too hard. And another thing, the messages get deleted after about 4-6 hours, meaning that the board isn\'t too flooded. Another thing, a player is able to delete a message anytime, because only one message may be posted at a time by any given player.

One more thing, is this off topic?

Yes, I agree that this would be a much more realistic solution than putting this in a newspaper somewhere.  And the tavern is already a great meeting place for people, so it\'s just as well.  :)

Good thinking Harwen!  :D

why don\'t we take the newspaper idea a step further. as i see different people have different views on what a paper should look like, or even what it should be used for.

since editing an in-game newspaper would need a small, easy to use text editing tool anyway, why not make this tool available to every player of a certain profession (e.g. a scribe). that way a couple of devoted people could run their own newspaper, sell space in it for advertising player-run shops, guilds, whatever and also sell it in the streets for some money. everyone could try to bring their idea of what a paper should look like to life and there\'d be some diversity on the newspaper-market.

the better the paper would be, the more people would read it and the more money could be taken in for ads. this would create some competition, and a well known paper with lots oif readers would as well be a small instrument of political power.

also this small text-editing/writing tool could be used for all kinds of creative use by the people who are able to work with it (probably really job-dependent). like:
storytellers writing in-game books (probably also selling them), guilds sending out memos, flyers, advertising leaflets, .....

does this idea appeal to anyone else besides me?

yeah, it would be great to see new things that are made by the players without any(or almost any) interverence of the devs, this way the world would really be \"evolving\" as they say.
