I think that melee-fighters, or people that are skilled with weapons, should have access to different styles. Why should the mages have a large quantity of spells whilst all the fighters can do is hack\'n\'slash?
For example, you can have different styles for hammer, sword, staff etc. Different styles for when you block, when you parry and when you\'re situtated behind a foe.
For more info on styles, go to darkageofcamelot.com
(thats where I got the idea from)

I also think there should be a number of special attacks, you could do whilst in a fight... Available to all, of course, but best used by a skilled fighter..

I believe a very basic form of this has been thought of already. If you look on the website, somewhere it says about being able to fight in different stances like aggressive or defensive. There\'s others, but I can\'t recall them. Anyhow, this will probably be expanded upon in the future. It\'s a good, refreshing idea. :)

can you stab and slash and all the good stuff like in morrowind? that is awesome.
-
Different styles can do different things, for example, slow, stund and make the target bleed (lose hp over a certain time).

Defensive and agressive stance are also in anarchy, so I don\'t hope they make it as simple as they\'ve done it there... Just sliding a bar from side to side, if defensive you gain a bonus to armor class and become a bit slower in attack speed, if agressive you lose AC but hit faster and better and deal more damage...

how about different styles of (hand-to-hand) fighting. like:
- drunken sailor boxing
- savate
- some martial arts thingie
- etc.
-
Are you just talking about different animations, or some actual different methods of fighting?
-
Different methods of fighting, that has different animations ;)
-
If there are enough weapon types, just make every weapon type have a unique style and it wouldn\'t be necessary I would think...

Perhaps there can be a vairety of specifics within each amelee combat style. Such as for agressive, suich as suicidal or injure as badly as possible. For something like defensive, maybe just block or to strike only when the enemy is not about to attack you. Things like that. Each specific adds to one skill, while subtracting in another. Or maybe it doesn\'t.
Also, there could also be different melee abilities, such as picking up someone and hruling them into a conveniently placed spear. Or a berzerk that allows to strike fear into enemies and send them running as you and your trusty, erm, frying pan burns everything in its path.
By the way, are there different styles for ranged combat? I think there is already a thread on it, but I haven\'t yet read it yet.
What do you think?

There could be different styles for rangers, that takes different amount of time to perform.
For example, there could be a critical shot, that deals more damage, and a Piercing shot, that allows you to shot at an enemy and disregarding its Armor Factor whilst doing damage.
Ideas?

Different fighting styles are a good idea. Being a warrior is really boring in some games. Special moves and different styles should all of course have their strengths and weaknesses.

Indeed, for example, lowered mobility, or lowered defence. They should also require some endurance, if the DEVs implent a stamina-bar.
