will there be any kind of famliliar support or animal companion type support?
if anyone has any ideas on how this would work please post a message
-
there was some talk about it on the tree-castle (in the roleplaying subforum) thread. we thought it might be great if you could get an animal/creature to follow and help you, but you\'d have to prove yourself worthy to that same animal and the relationship would base more on trust and friendship then on power over the animal/creature
so, if you\'d misbehave towards the creature, it could leave or even attack (and kill if it\'s powerful enough) you
...the pure familiars idea is a bit cliche, so i\'d go for that one (trust-based) :]
-
That would open up a whole new range of possibilities. Cant afford to hire npc guards then buy some guard dogs (or similar creatures). You could even have pets!! :D
-
right and next you can have a cat ( there goes the enkidukai race ) as a pet.
but the familiars is a good idea but if they come i want a snake ( i like snakes specially when they are poisenous )
-
Heh, yes, instead of fighting yourself you could let creatures fight for you.
If you have choosen to become an innocent healer-type character you will get problems defending yourself, so you could either get an animal companion who follows you, or you could summon creatures who under a short time fights under your command (or individually) against foes (like the Aeons from ffX).
These would protect you, and in return you give them your love, friendship and care.
The summoned creatures doesn\'t have their own will since they are created by you, and can as well be unsummoned by you.
I like the idea about creatures who shares a bond with you. The closer they are to you the less is the chance they flee when hurted. The creature could have a meter that shows how strong the bond between you and your companion is.
A full bond means they protects you with their life.
There should be some things that strengthens your bond, like if you heal your companion a lot, gives it food, protects it when it\'s defenceless, plays with it a lot etc.
The creature could also be able gain levels so it becomes stronger and gets special abilities, like if your companion is a bird-like creature it could be so strong it can lift you and give you a ride.
Permanent death of creatures could bring some drama into the game :)
-
well i wasn\'t meaning this as combat related, a familliar is a creature of pure magic, it strengthens it masters mind and helps his magical abilites. (ie:faster mp restore or faster spells, or some such)
animal companions are purely animals that have been befriened by a person, it follows by it own will.
(limited advancement)
domestcated, this would be like guard dogs etc. they wold be weaker than other types of \"pets\"
(no advancement)
-
Sounds a little too much like pokemon to me :P :P :P
-
hmm.. i see a faint connection.. but that would be with anything that invloved any kind of animal/creature
-
It sounds to me like a very good idea druke.. That is also how companions function in other mmorpgs, and having those are fun, and quite powerful.. (if there is a functional AI system, that is)
I would personally love to see familiars implemented, for such are a very nice thing to have for wizards.. especially if going solo, since they could both heal the caster and take some of the damage away from him, when he is up against a powerful adversary..
-
I like the companion idea more, id like too have a giant tiger that I could ride on. Make all the other creatures look like rats. The familiar thats like ur special creature right??
-
Great post Fanomatic! :)
BTW, as far as I know, familiars will be implemented in PS. From the main site:
Empathy is used to communicate with your \"familiar\".
A familiar is usually a little pet; it can be a bird, a snake, a cat or any other small creature (even monsters). During the creation process, the owner of the pet must use some of his blood and perform a special magical rite. In this way he will create a magical link between him and his familiar.
The familiar usually follows you all the time and he gets experience performing things with you. He has his own hit points and mana points. He can increase his abilities and even cast spells when he reaches high experience values. The familiar can be used in many situations as a scout.
So it will probably be more of a magical type ability. In some RPG\'s, I know you have to play a magical class (like wizard or sorceror) to be able to summon a familiar, but since PS doesn\'t have classes (yay! :D ) then it will probably be at some basic level of magic ability that you will be able to summon a familiar. Of course, the more magically inclined you are, the more potential bonuses your familiar could get...or something like that.
I\'m really hoping for a bird-like familar, since I\'ll be needing to do a lot of scavaging, and getting to inaccesible places. Well, as far as I can imagine anyway. :)
-
Yes, companions and familiars would nicely balance \"specialized\" mages/clerics/druids (specialized in the way that they suck at combat). I would love to have an animal companion! It would also make things much more complicated(adding new depths), thus more interesting.
I agree with someone(sry), familiars are magical and should somehow advance with the player. Companions are just normal animals, so they should be enhaced/\"crippled\" only by their natural progression(i mean growth and the like.)
-
I don\'t believe that familiars should be all that adept to battle at all. I imagine them being some sort of little cute creature, like a dragon pup, robin, blue jay, eagle, falcon, crow, bat, GOLEM, snake, spider...well you get it. I suggest that there should be all kinds of familiars, from cool-looking to cutesy as not to have all the jerks scoffing at the bunny trailing you.
Usually familiars are mediums to the spiritual plane, so they would very well be magical enhancers of some skill of some sort.
I would love to have a unique familiar though.
-
In most cases, familiars would probably only use spells in combat. Although, you might have a rouge-type familiar that is adept at sneaking up behind people and making a critical hit when they don\'t expect it. But probably not a melee combat oriented familiar like wolves or something; that\'s more reserved for pets.
Although familars can be useful for many more things besides combat. A small familiar would likely not be good at combat, but would be adept at sneaking through small places, and perhaps opening locked doors from the other side. They may also possess special skills, like lockpicking, or just be useful to have around in general, say, your familiar has particularly good eyesight and can spot enemies from farther away than you could.
-
i have my familiars allready, only you don\'t know i yet.
you will all be my slaves.
slaves = familiars
-
Drachion, that is off-topic. It really is.
Anyway, I like the D&D concept of familiars. You could use them as spies, you could use them as translators, they can give bonuses, in D&D you can deliver touch spells through your familiar. In conclusion, familiars are cool and Wizards of the Coast is really cool.

I read this one book were this on guy who was an assasin/Merc Had a Famillier named Loiosh, It was a Cool looking Reptile the size of a Large iguana, Had Bird like Scaled wings and a sort of beaked mouth. Gold couler and helped provide comedic reliefe since the Assasin/Merc and Loiosh shared a Telepathic link alowing them to talk to each other. I think that a Familier should be able to grab Items for you also. But what i was trying to say is, What happens if A player decides to get Mean and kills someones Famillier, What steps are there to Prevent that?
Edit: Comedic relief like this(I cant Remember the Assasin/Merc name right now so for all intents and purposes his name is X):
Loiosh: So we are going to the Army boss?
X: Yes i guess so, dont know how i got myself into this though.
Loiosh: Great! I can be a Seargent! LINE ATTENTION!
X: Shut up please
Loiosh: COMPANY! SOUND OFF!
X: Shut UP Loiosh!
Loiosh: COMPANY! MARCH!
X:Shut the f**k up Loiosh!
-
presumably, the familiar would be treated like a PC, when regardingrules of interaction. If a monster or NPC kills the familiar, there should be heavy penalties, like perhaps not getting another one for a year(game time) or something.

I believe that familiars should be able to just be like pets, AT FIRST!! But, with time they should grow to the point that they can help with many different ranged tasks! (Ex. spells in battle, lockpicking, sneak attacks, getting in crevases, etc.) Also I think that they SHOULD give enhancements to its owner. So, If it can spot enemies from far away then you should be able to also. Another is if a fammiliar is good at seeing at night then you should have no problem seeing then either! But, If we don\'t get the enhancements that the fammiliars have then maybe like if they see an enemy they can hiss, bark or make some sort of noise to let you know some one is coming or standing in the shadows! IS THIS UNDERSTANDABLE?
-
No, Its Confusing and Incoherent ;)
-
The idea is good, especially familiars that you have to earn the trust of and keep if you want them to stick around. Also the idea of permanent death for familiars is great and would certainly add drama. The idea of having to use your empathy fits in well with the overall concept of PS and that one needs to use charisma to have good relations with animals (ex. aninmal trainer) already in the PS concept. Sharing blood could be a good idea in \"summoning\" or acquiring a familiar. Personally I like the idea of befriending better than the idea of summoning familiars.
As there seems to be a lot of interest in this idea maybe we can get some Dev comment on this thread ......

That would be nice, reminds me of this weird sci-fi show beastmaster where some kevin sorbo looking guy would be able to see through the eyes of his falcon.
This would be useful for example like in the Char Creation, the Advantages and Disadvantages...they are so tempting you get carried away....The familiars should be able to give you abilities like night vision or infra vision through their eyes, luck, extra money after combat, enhancement of a certain magic Way, the ability to sense danger or being able to detect traps. Certain powerful ones could give you malus to attack, defense, luck, jinxed, a certain Way, or a malus to a stat....which would make you want to avoid the evil-powerful ones
-
Personally. I think that this should be limited to those who are animal trainers. I mean, what good is being an animal trainer then? Also, animal trainers by rights should have their familiars more powerful. They can summon familiars for others.... for a price and a little blood ;) Or else they just may become vetrinarians...
-
I\'ve always thought that familiars and pets should be kept separate. A familiar is a creature that is bonded to you (provided you take care of it) and is as much a part of your being as your character.
Pets, however, should be animals that are either caught in the wild or bred from other animals. It is the job of an animal trainer to charm, capture, domesticate, care for, train, and sell animals. These pets can be used for various things, depending on what they\'re trained to do. You could have a pet that would alarm you when dange was near, carry extra gear for you, or just be a deadly weapon. But they are still just animals.
A familiar is more of a magical being; you use a bit of your blood and some magic to summon your familiar. This required you to be magically inclined, and it is your creature; it cannot be sold or traded. Although animals will most likely have skills, familiars will be more magically oriented, to the point that they can even cast their own spells (if you have a caster type familiar, that is).
Just my opinion, of course :D
-
I agree, but there should also be some difference between animal companions and pets. The bond with the first is greater and the animal is more involved in everyday life.
-
I think that only very damage deprived classes should get a summonable familair. Other characters should have the options of buying pets that die permenantly. So you don\'t get warriors who just constantly resummon a familiar so they don\'t have to take any damage while dealing out tonnes.
-
Hey, guys! Although I liked the idea of \"trust familiars\", I go beyond. For insteance, if u have a mage, u could even create and design your own familiar, such as an \"ice demon\" or stuff...
-
Mages have a single, magical familiar telepathically bonded to them. If the familiar dies, it takes a bit of the mage with it. A mage cannot bond a very powerful creature, however. Familiars are usually various types of birds, cats, etc.
Animal trainers train animals to obey them and stuff. They have no magical bond with the animals, and the animals themselves are not magical or especlly intellegent. They are just animals. However, a skilled animal trainer can train multiple animals of any type. Also, trained animals can be sold.
You really can\'t compare a mage\'s familiar and a trained animal. The two are completely different. Saying that familiars would make animal training pointless is stupid. You may say that isn\'t what you were saying, but that doesn\'t mean I can\'t say what I\'m saying.
-
Why is everybody forgetting animal companions. They\'re similar to both other types, but still unique.
-
animal cmop.is mearly an animal that followsa person around, not exactly a pet just, a friend
-
in DnD, an animal companion is treated similar to a familiar except you dont get the empathic/telepathic link that a familiar gets. animal companions are basically familiars for ranger and druid classes. there are also a few prestige classes that, if taken, turns the familiar into an undead creature(but still a familiar). in neverwinter nights, not only can the familiars be controlled by their masters, but they get skills such as lockpicking and stealth skills. if the DM wants to add the little bit of detail, the wizard/sorcerer has to go out and actually befriend a small animal and go through a process of making that animal the character\'s familiar.
i cant wait to see what the devs are going to do for the familiar aspect...
-
Its not a bad idea but if it ever was implemented I would have to stay away from that! Thats what I have my Ires for (personal guards)
-
this familiar idea reminds me of your Creature in Black & White
-
If you mes up, you get an annoying faery that says \"Hey, Look, Listen!\" every second. And you can never kill it. annoying part: it\'s in your music, not the chat box!
-
Which RPG is DM?
-
Ngefan,
1)what are you talking about?
2)edit your post, do not double post
-
ngefan: DM is a shortcut of saying dungeon master for dungeons and dragons, a pen and paper roleplaying game. if you really want to know how DnD is played, go to your local card shop or book store and hang out in the fantasy section.
-
There\'s already a plan to implement familiars in-game. This can be seen in the mainsite under
Skill-->Knowledge Skills-->Empathy
For those inclined to see, http://www.planeshift.it/player_skills.html
-
The description on the site under empathy is cool, especially how you need to perform a magical rite using your blood to make the familiar yours. Thats cool
-
i think there should be four types on animal \"helpers\"
1.The animal familiars: magically summoned creatures that only a magically inclined person may have
2. the fighting animal companions: bought at an expensive price, XP up and die permanently, just like an animal merc.
3. bonded animal companions: u have to gain their trust to get their help, they range from fighting for u to learning abilities like those mentioned before like lock picking, diff vision, able to reach inaccessable places....
4. animal pets: theyre there to be just that, ur pet and they do nothing except sit there and look cool and u can have a personal bond with them, and if u become close enough to them they may eventually become bonded animal companions.....
-
I think that the familiar should be able to carry extra stuff for u.
Like in morrowind if u buy a certain type of rat it can carry things for u.
Also there should be different types of familiars.e.g
Fighting class,
Magic using class,
thieve class.
(like in baldurs gate!)
Honestly i can\'t wait for this game to get started properly.crystal blue here i come!!
-
I always liked the idea of randomly summoned familiars. something about the idea just appeals to me
any in game creature can be randomly summoned to be your familiar, there is then a battle of wills, if you manage to have a stronger will than the creature, you have a lackey to follow you, if not, depending on the creatures personality, it might A. attack you, B. follow you anyway, C. return to where it came from. I like in D&D, the way the creatures give you different capabilities. no one creature was necessarily better than another as a familiar as they all had different capabilities to grant. the abilities granted to a spellcaster should be dependant on the control they have over the creature as well. a lesser spellcaster should have low control over even a low level creature, giving her less bonus from having it.
course this is all just my ideal of a familiar system
-
i like the discpition io the site page of familars. they should become as much a part of ur char as ur self.
falcon has some good ideas
i agree compleatly with #2 but i wouldnt want familars to have to be summond to magic users.well i half take that back i dont think you should have to be an advanced magic user b u shld hav some knowadge of magic 4 the bonding ritual. #4 is fine except the pet to bonded part #3 if u find a creature in the \"wild\" perhaps they can become bonded.
-
Well I think that anyone should be able to have a familiar no-mater how much magic abilities you have, I sort of see a familiar as your spirit possessing a small animal. In a way I see a familiar as part of you, maybe the spirit of the animal bonds with your soul. Maybe your familiar can have the ability to ?change vessels? in the way of if you find a compatible creature your familiar has the ability to posses that creature instead of the previous animal, this will get your familiar different abilities however, there can be disadvantages to doing this like if you choose a weak animal then your stats of your familiar will weaken. Also you may need to start from scratch on training your familiar as far as skill-wise so if your familiar has really good skills, you don?t want to ?change vessels? or you will loose all the training, & also the previous animal your familiar possessed may attack you with really good skills.
There would definitely be a limited # of vessels to choose from, as the description says that it is usually a small animal like a pet or something. Lets see; cat, small dog, frog, squirrel, bat, raven etc.
(it really depends on what sort of small animals are going to be in Yliakum, these are the type of animals I expect familiars will take shape to, probably going to be more unique small animals then the ones we have on earth but you get the general picture?)
-
i think of course we all need mythical creature like giant snakes, griffons, dragons(in differnt colors that breath differnt stuff starting as a little dragon thingy then you can ride it until it lvls and wing grow then you take to the skys with a dragonlance and kill stuff{i just love dragonlance books})
but then you need your bunnys and some horses tiger bears camels etc.... because just snakes is boring but big snakes is fun 8)
-
How about... something in the more creative/original area? ;D
-
like glueing a snake onto a bird?
-
That would be funny coz the snake and the bird would be trying to get away from each other. LOL
Edit: Just thought I should let you all know I just finished a weekend of night shift at work, and it\'s like 7am at the moment, so I\'m kinda out of my mind... Or my mind is out - probably both.
-
hmm id probably , just have my good ol\' megears as my familiar
-
or maybe we could put reins and a saddle on a krans back and ride em :]
