In you opinion is planeshift as good as starwars galaxies?
i dont know as i havent played planeshift yet!
-
In a realistic opinion, of course PS isn\'t as good as SWG. PlaneShift is in pre-alpha stages of development.
You can only argue something like this when both games are at the same stage of completion- something I think will never happen, as PS will never be \'complete\'.
-
I think PS will have some sort of a \"Definitive\" update.
So that when they release it they shall say,\" here is the full game, at last\". Thats not to say there will not be any more updates, just that the game shall at that stage be what the developers where aiming for from the start of it all.
They can\'t just keep the game as a pile of updates,
........Can they? 8o
-
what i meant was is it as good in regards of complexity?
-
Planeshift isn\'t very complex right now, just running around, chatting, collecting crystals and talking to NPC\'s :P

as the great Jedi master would have put it...
\"It will be, oh, it will be.\"

I have heard that SW:G sux big time. but still it\'s a little hard to compare since SW:G is almost finished (if not finished) while PS will be in v0.3 at the end of this year. So even if I find Planeshift more intresting than SW:G I still would have to agree that SW:G is better game becouse it is done.
-
I play SWG all the time, PlaneShift in no way compares to SWG at the moment... but planeshift is just early in development, SWG is a finished game. I still get on PlaneShift though, and it has great potential :).
-
SWG is the largest pile of excrement on the planet, PS as it is NOW is better than SWG imho. SWG needs to have a swift and humane mercy killing... just look at the fact they locked access to the SWG Forums to SWG subscribers only... guess they didnt want prospective customers comeing and seeing all the rants raves and complaints about the game before they bought it.
-
Sw:G is ok but PS will probably surpass it once more is added to the game. Especially with all the play input rather then just assuming what people want.
-
for some reason i find that planeshift is already better than star wars galaxies. Already galaxies has turned out to be a stinker. People hate the idea of so much realism that you have to walk for 3 hours to get to another city. People hate that the devs on that team decided to release a game as a full game and sell it when there were important things missing. and the price! what a load of bullhonkey! Money currupts everything! if you watch colege of high school foot ball you notice it is more fun to watch than the NFL! Why? because high school and college foot ball isnt corrupted by money! Free things always have better spirit and atmosphere (like planeshift) please planeshift devs, i know the allure of money is great but look at the games before you that have made that mistake (eq, rooonscape, and now starwars galaxies) Keep it free baby! thats all I have to say :D
-
You know whemyfield? You are so right. Take a look at the XFL, that was supposed to be a \'hardcore\' NFL, but it was hypocritical as the NBA. I love collage football, it is so exciting.
Lets not forget the ever legendary corruption of Everquest!
\"Once upon a time, there were a few guys who liked playing video games, namley roleplaying games.
One day, they pulled together a dream for an Rpg that you can play with other people from across the globe. They dreamt of a world where dragons and magic thrived, and the world grew.
They began programming, modeling, drafting....they would give the world another universe in which to live in...they would be gods, the Devs...
Then another day one of them, being exceptionally adept at basic mathematics, computed a few figures and came up with a lot of zeros.
He showed these figures to his buddies, and they agreed to finish the project as fast as possible so they could charge people $10-18 a month for mediocre gameplay, a dull background, repetivive quests, and hardly rewarding graphics and animation...so they could rake in $40,000,000+ a year, depending on their circumstances. And this is the story of the MMORPG....it continues with the CONSOLES, when Final Fantasy 11 makes it\'s debut as the biggest money-hogging scam this side of Role Playing, with an estimated revenue of $88,000,000+ not including mandatory and expensive updates.
Then there was Planeshift....it came out of the shadows, shouting a simple cry....\"free imagination\"...\"open-source\"...
And out of these shadows, rose the future...justice
-
That is pure genious! I hate being charged for online games. Heck, I don\'t play the ones you have to pay for simply because if I didn\'t play it a lot one month I would be pissed and quit my subscription for being charged for nothing.
-
I have galaxies... it is sooo much better than this. But then again, this is only in prealpha and I\'m pretty into it. Come CB, galaxies will have mombo competition, pal.

You don\'t have to say it at all, as it is said enough to last a few lifetimes, and mostly it is said like \"Well Palnesheeft0rz be fwee forewer cuz i donts likes r00jnscrape for havin dem pay servs. st00ped,\" and it gets really dull to keep telling people \"yes, it will\", \"yes it will\" and \"YES IT WILL!\"... I should complain to the devs and ask if any sentence containing \"planeshift\" & \"free\", could be automatically replaced with \"Yes - Free - Always\"... :D
-
Lol, if PS ever becomes something that costs, I\'m quittin.
-
i think most people would, and we could all happily live in xandria\'s(or was it grono\'s?) text based graphics conversion, yay!

I\'ve had SW:G for a while, my friend got it in the USA. It\'s alright, but like most games has it\'s glitches. Atm it\'s better than PS, but I think PS will soon overtake it, as the SW:G Devs\'ll not bother fixing bugs, but put loads of addons on, to make themselves more money. The same thing happened to EQ, and that went downhill.
-
Like I said, when CB comes out, so much more will be added to it and it\'ll be a lot better. I mean w/ combat, more items, more skills, spells, etc... It\'ll kick ass!
-
even in this simple state, PS pwns SWG... that game litterally sucks...
-
It isn\'t that bad...but CB will definitely be a LOT better than it. I can\'t wait...

Nothing good can come out of a Star-Wars game these days I say.
Lucasarts is simply in the mood to collect some more money from their fans who swallows everything that has anything to do with Star-wars

That\'s a bit broad. Sure, the majority of Star Wars games aren\'t great... But there\'s the Dark Forces series (Most recent title in that series Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Acadamy.) Then there\'s the great Rogue Squadron series on the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube. Last, but not least, there\'s Knights Of the Old Republic, although its not out on PC yet :/
And SWG is a bad, bad game. May have worked on a console, but I expect a better game when I use my PC.
-
Yeah have you played Jedi Acedemy? It\'s an awesome game. The Lighsaber battles are unbeatable. The only complaints I have are that they really let their level design slip since the first game. However not to say the level design is bad, they just did an amazing job in the first game. The last boss is also an absolute joke, she\'s not harder then any other the other jedi\'s. But given that it\'s an amazing game, I also hear that Knight of the old repulbic is a massive hit.
Sure SWG may suck, but they do still produce good title. (though the fact that an average of 3 starwars games comes out each year does seem like licence abuse, but how can you complain if the games are good.)
-
I seriously doubt our *alpha* CB release will be better than SWG.
-
Depends on how you look at it. If you compare gamingvalue against paid bucks, PS will win. SWG is only selling because of its name. Ever wondered why their forum is for players only?

I wouldn\'t count on it.. swg sucks... bigtime... the amount of \"nothing\" in that game is simply breathtaking... I personally think they\'ve milked Starwars for all that\'s good, now there\'s only the empty shell left, which doesn\'t contain anything worth ones while...
-
Not just out of Star Wars games, but the movies as well. Episode II: Attack of the Clones was not SW-ish... The whole little Zem Weasel/worm thingies was just cheesey. the combat was cool in the movie, but it wasn\'t very much like Star Wars. Episode I was already pretty childish. Watch one of the old ones and then watch one or two...they get bad...

wow, whens the last time you played? I\'ve been playing SWG for the past three or four months now, and theres oodles of stuff to do. GCW is one of them, I go on raids against other guilds all the time, even though i have a crappy character, I participate in krayt hunts, woof! theres tons of stuff to do. Quests arnt as good as they could be, but oh well.

What do businesses do?
Sponsor.
Why?
To get more people.
Therefore...
Free is the way to be!

I do not play online games that cost monthly payments. But I hate hearing people bash those games just as much. Making online games is their job. Would you work for free? No. Neither will they.

Yes, I have played both Jedi knight 1, 2 and jedi academy. Yes, I have to say that Jedi-knight 2 gave me a pleasant surprise. It was something new, and the saber-fights were pretty satisfying.
The story was old-style Star-wars, which was great. A lot of fun things to do. Good!
I thought that perhaps lucasarts had risen once again to release some great titles.
I was wrong.
Jedi academy is a joke. Same old game-engine (a modified Q3 engine). They added 2 new light-sabers and styles, 0 new forces, 1 new mp-game style and a very poor editor to create your own character.
Some new monsters, some new races. Same damn soundtrack (They could surprise us with something new for once)
It was more like a mod than a real game. Worthless! X(
Yes, lucasart did make great titles in the past, but now they\'re just exploiting their trademark. They know folk will buy it because it\'s star-wars.
SWG isn\'t even done yet, but they released it anyway. Guess why?
Waste your money on something else.
-
Fanomatic is right... Lucasarts are in a milking face atm, milking their overused products and \"stealing\" your money :P
-
10 words...Knights of the old republic owns all starwars games. its the only one (that i know of) that has a great rpg/d&d style feel to it.
-
SWG may not be great, haven\'t played it, but to say something like this V is just rediculous.

Obviously nothing good can come out of your keyboard, so trash it and revert to the Amish days. :P Just pullin\' your leg, but that\'s the general feeling.
Lucasarts still makes good games. I admit that they have actually begun to make bad ones too, but they always have at least one promising title in the works.
Rebel Strike, Gladius, KOTOR, Monkey Island series :D
Come on, they\'re not all bad.
As for comparing PS to it...well, I don\'t really think you can. There is the point of completion, mentioned at least a hundred times, There is the fact that they are different genre\'s, if you will, SWG is Sci-fi, PS is Fantasy, and there\'s the fact that SWG devs were paid to make it, which doesn\'t necessarily say anything about quality, but it does bring up the issue of a deadline.
You\'re welcome for that run-on sentence. :]

Whatever you say \"Jedi\" :P

Now that is true. KOTOR is, in my opinion, the best RPG created in a long time, a very long time.
-
hmm...remember that lucas arts made one of the greatest games of all time: maniac mansion.
-
lucas arts at one time made the best games like day of the tentcul, sam and max, and monky island. but soon after that they became a real craphole of game makers.
-
It\'s not a fair comparison.
On one side, you have wookies dancing ballet! I can imagine myself doing that if I had more free time to play these games.
On the other hand, planeshift still has to work out its main gameplay features such as decent combat mechanics, cool skills, communication interfaces, and much more.
-
don\'t forget indiana jones... man did i spend a lot of time on those :)
-
Well, lucasarts are planning sequels to the most popular games in their history, like Sam & Max, DOT and Full throttle.
Do they actually make an attempt to create good games once again, or do they just wanna milk out the last money from a bunch of retrogames? We\'ll find out soon enough...
And about PS vs. SWG...
It\'s true its not a fair comparision. PS is a free project and is not so very popular yet since its still in beta.
SWG has a paid team that creates exactly what their fans wants, because they\'re payed for it.
The PS-team works for free, and doesn\'t have the same resources as the billion-dollar Lucasarts company.
On the other hand I think that the PS team cares more about their game than Lucasarts ever will.

Dude, Fanomatic...that argument was just...nice.... I totally agree with what he said and besides, I think PS is better anyways...
-
Sorry to burst your guys\' bubble, but Lucas Arts is a Publisher, not a developer for many of the games you\'ve mentioned.
KotoR was made my Bio Ware, makers of Baldur\'s Gate 2 and Neverwinter Knights, and you wonder why it\'s good? :P
Jedi Academy was made by Raven.
And the list goes on.
Just because there\'s the \"Lucas Arts\" logo on the box doesn\'t mean they had much of a hand in the game itself. The moral of the story is, some companies can make good games, some can\'t.
And pretending that Plane Shift is better than SWG, just because you have a distaste of the latter, is foolish. While it may not be the greatest game ever made, or worth the monthly payments, it has had years of development time by paid professionals. Not to spite the devs of this game, but I hardly doubt they could match that.
Oh yes, one more thing. Despite your feelings on SWG, the City system they are implementing is quite revolutionary, and wiil have to be considered by next gen MMORPGs from now on.
-
Darkcow, I agree.
Disliking a game because of disliking its origins or the mercenary money grubbing attitudes of the companies involved is to disrespect the achievements of the developers, coders, artists and musicians who actually put the thing together.
This is true even of hating m$.

The final (final as in \"good\" version, not as in there won\'t be any more added content) version of PS won\'t be out for at least another year or so. They still have TONS of work to complete on the project, not to mention the mountain\'s of bugs to patch. As for now, SWG is better obviously. Once PS releases though, it will have some healthy competition with other MMORPGs (quality speaking). Yes even though PS is completely free (hopefully it\'ll stay that way *the game that starts with rune and ends in scape*), some people prefer \"professionally\" developed games over non-profit organizations.
SWG may have its flaws (and I mean MANY), but it\'s still better than PS right now. The Alpha CB release should be more promising than the current PS release. My computer can barely run it at all:
1GHZ Pentium III
384 MB Ram
64 MB GeForce2 MX 400
40 GB Hard Drive (30 GB Free)
Hopefully, the PS programmers can tweak PS so it won\'t be a MEMORY HOG anymore. I barely get 4 fps...
I mean, SWG\'s graphics surpass that of PS\'s, and I get 60 fps in hhigh population areas. It takes me about 23 minutes (honestly, I timed my self... 23:09) to get into the PS world, and afterwards I get an average of 5 to 10 fps. Oh joy. A game that looks like Natural Selection (Half-Life mod, real nice textures and building work, but still built on an engine that takes a pentium one to run) runs at 10 fps. Please fix this inconvenience :) That is all for now...

I\'m pretty sure they canned Sam & Max. I\'m not entirely sure of the status of Full Throttle, but I don\'t its favorable, either :(
And while yes, its true that LucasArts is a publisher, its not smart buisness sense to associate yourself with bad games, which has been the majority of LucasArts titles, lately (with some exceptions). For example, what do you think when you hear the name \"BioWare\" (I know, they are a developer, but I can\'t think of a great publisher off the top of my headt)? Of course, you\'re going to expect a top-notch, professional game, as their titles tend to be. Conversely, hear the name \"Wizard Works\", and what do you think? Bargain bin material, usually.
I also agree with Venge, it is rather disrespectful to hate software (or the companies/developers that make it) simply because it costs money. However, on the other hand, judgeing a piece of software based on its quality (useability) is perfectly reasonable, which is what I\'ve seen in the majority of this thread. However, in that regard, PS rates rather lowly, as its only a pre-alpha tech demo; on the other hand, if you asked me what I thought of PS, I\'d probably proclaim my love for it, based on its promise (and due to the fact that I actually have fun while I\'m online, somehow...).
One question to anyone who has been playing SWG since launch (and is not a Star Wars/SWG fanboy), how has it progressed since that inital month?
