Title: A Head Set Hook Up!
Post by: Sarios on October 24, 2003, 07:28:37 pm
I think that there should be something to enable us to use headsets because some ppl don\'t like waiting (thinking that the person they are chating to is still typing) for a response! Also it will make it easier to chat with others while your in action! Maybe (somehow) by after typing a command it could enable it, or a button of some sort will make it work! Then on top of that there could be a button command to talk to your guild!

EXAMPLES:

Say- simply just talk

Shout- press \"1\"

Tell- press \"2\" click a name

Guild chat- press \"3\"

Group chat- press \"4\"

Also this will help when ppl are trying to teach others how to use menus and such because they will be able to talk them through it!

it would be kinda neat, but what kind of load would it put on the server? and before someone suggests making the mic system p2p, how complex would that get?  I\'m guessing that if you want a headset system, you will have to do it externally from PS.  wasn\'t there a program like that written for CS players or something?

Surprisingly enough you can do it right now.  Just run Dragon NaturallySpeaking and you can run most commands.  If you redefine the command system it can do most anything.  This isn?t really a job for the developers.  Voice recognition was probably not designed into it however it works.

On the flip side you?re probably going to need a lot faster computer.  Voice recognition is fairly CPU intensive and you have to run a video game as well.  This is one of those times that you should do-it-yourself though because you can.  I?ve gotten it to work and it wasn?t that difficult.

There are plenty of voice chat programs which you can download and use.

just an opinion but i think mics or headphones would be kinda dumb in ps or any mmorpg (unless maybe a game like planetside) especailly when most people are gonna rp

I don\'t know about the voice regognition part, but there should definitly be some buttons or hotkeys for /shout, /tell etc.

The only way I could see any use of this is if it was used like the /tell, otherwise it would be too confusing for other players and they might miss what you were saying anyways, I don\'t think it\'s that good of an idea for any mmo, sorry.

Well the idea is really just so that when you are in action, for example fighting then you can let the person know your there but fighting, then ppl can talk each other through things easier!

The plane shifts server handling voice isn?t going to happen any time soon.  My guess is it?s never going to happen.  Why?

Voice is generated at 8000 to 44,000 samples per second.  There is also an 8-bit mode and the 16 bit mode.  That means in one second 8000 bytes 88,000 bytes of data have to be handled.  At the lowest resolution the sound quality will totally suck. That?s a lot of data even if you compress it. And unless the player has a decent connection to the Internet they are out.

On the server side handling sound data would be a painful process indeed.  You would have to transmit the sound data to everybody in ear shot.  This would significantly increase the amount of bandwidth required to get the job done.  Furthermore it would have to be done almost instantaneously.  Otherwise the sound would have dropouts and pauses and not be understandable.  Doing this with over 1000 online players is way beyond the scope of the game like this.  If two people were talking at the same time the plane shift server would have to mix the sound together wasting hideous amounts of CPU time or send you both files real-time wasting hideous amounts of bandwidth.  There would be no end to the nasty technical problems this would present. The problems incurred by getting the plane shift server to handle sound would be as complicated as the plane shift project itself.  So the question is, do you want to have a video game or sound system?

I believe what you are left with is doing it yourself.  You either create your sound connection without using the plane shifts server, or you use the existing text system with something like voice recognition.

This might be possible however in the foreseeable future.  Technology is still increasing at a fast rate.  But considering that plane shift is a free gaming system I seriously doubt a server capable of doing this will be handed to the community for free until the price comes down substantially.  And bandwidth isn?t free either especially bandwidth like you?re talking about.

That\'s right, headsets are for Counter-Strike, not Plane Shift!

Besides, that voice commands for the chat would do enough already. A voice recog prog sounds okie if someone really wanted to be that lazy, or efficient.  ;)

I am going to go look into those voice command thingies. Now only if I had a mic...
