I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what should happen when you die. I will post mine, but I would like to hear from anyone who has any clue to what will happen in terms of activity while being dead, and getting back.
My Idea:
When you die you respawn in the nearest city....but wait, don\'t boo me yet, I don\'t want it that easy either.
The city you respawn in has to be one you have been (to prevent taking advantage of the Reaper)
Here\'s the catch: The city is an inverse of the original city, namely the same city on it\'s own off the \"map\". This doesn\'t mean a whole inverse stagmalite(sp) which I think would mean alot of server space and ridiculousness(is that a word?)
I mean inverse cities, inverse like colours of the grass is blue and the sky green. I do understand that the large cities would be difficult to reconstruct with different colours and music and such, but it could be limited to a place in the city, like in Hydlaa it could be the centeral \'square\' with a wall around it.
The only difference is that the statue of Laanx is inc colour, and the sky is grey, like a parallel universe. This would limit load time and lag as well as give a creepy feeling to the afterlife. Preventing escape from the city by adding a cliff or a sea around it can dissuade escape (which if you fell meant that you would respawn back into the city anyways).
Also, all the characters are transparent, and you cannot use items (because you are already dead you won\'t need to heal will you?)
On the terms of escape or ressurection, you can have a buddy resurrect you at a nearby temple.
-Or you can do an item retrieval quest for an NPC or something. I imagine the fountain being a portal to the living world, and having a \"Life Crystal\" would let you pass through it.
Getting this \"Life Crystal\" item thingie would mean a trek into the dungeons under the square (and inadvertenly all the after life cities) to obtain it.
Wether you fight monsters, or answer riddles or play a mini game to get it is uncertian to me. I wouldn\'t want to spend hours puzzling out some old geezer\'s riddle to get a stupid crystal, I am bound to die quite a few times everyone should.
So a simple trek to the wall of crystals should do it, of course maybe an annoying monster or two that is difficult to kill, but not hard in anyway (even for a mage with a reduced magic ability) for anyone even newbs. Something like a creature that you can only hurt half it\'s hp every time you hit it, so it would mean 20 hits to get it to 1 hp and at that point it runs away or dies. Also traps should be annoying.
Also: Dying in the cites (which would mean you were very non-responsive or unattentive) would mean respawning in the begining of the city again, starting the quest over and losing the item.
-
We can do something simmilar to BM where when you die you are sent to one of 4 different afterlife worlds and to get back you just wait until your magically brought back to life! Or we could have it so that once you enter an afterlife world you must find a portal that will glow green on the ground, upon entering it you would come back to life! I don\'t know but we can work with it like we do everything else!
-
That sounds nice, but it has become apparent to me that people dont like to stand around while they are dead, it seems boring to me as well.
But I am against the idea of experience penalties when you die. You should learn from mistakes, not getting experience and dying should be enough I think. But I dont want to talk about that, since it relates o the PK pvp sub-forum too much :(
-
you might also look at the older \"what happend when you die\" thread(s) ...there were some good ideas there ...though the one with the inverted city isn\'t bad, still search for them, please :]
-
Thank you. I tried to search for them, but my computer won\'t let me search for them apparently. Which means I have to manually do it. I posted a complaint on the forum requests a while ago, but I just got someone telling me to go complain to the people who made the forum, not the Devs, so in spite of that, I don\'t bother to look past the 5th page.
-
i read a thread once where someone had the idea that you never really die but once you get to a certain point of mauling that you are barely alive and you have to drag your self to the city slowely and get revived... sort of a good idea... but i want massive penalities for dieing (stats taken away all stuff gone) would make REALLY interesting gameplay.. :D
-
So your saying that you should basically restart your char, but without actually having to restart....
That would definatly make it interesting and put a lot of stress on getting a healer in your party!
Personally, I think there should be major penalties, but only temporary. You dont lose experience, but every time you die, you get a -4 to all stats etc, that build upon each other each time you die. But you can work them off with exp., it just makes it harder to do so when your in that rough of condition.
Or, in reference to an afterworld, when you die, everyone has the same stats and are lvl 1, have to complete quests to be revived, and when do so, are back to thier old highly powerful selves ;) That would make it fair so that a high lvl doesnt just hold the portal open for n00bs so to speak ;)
-
Guys, that\'s horrible, why such massive penalties for \'dying\'? What is the practicality of this? What if you die in a fight for fun? I don\'t want this to get off topic, so please make suggestions on what happens after you die, not on the penalties.... :D
Besides, to end your extremist suggestion right here, massive penalties are Bad. X(
No body would get anywhere levelwise, everyone will die. :(
Alot. :(
This isn\'t a *click* *click* *click* *click* *die* *click* game, this is a game where you learn from your mistakes and such.
No one would be able to leave the first level if this happened. X(
Uneseccary repetitiveness, at least to my knowlage, isn\'t wanted. :(
Please put plausibility and practicality into your suggestions. Thanks! :D
-
I dunno about you, but penalties are plausible. Has anyone ever played Asheron\'s Call? Their penalty system for being killed, and how they worked the whole death system worked quite well. If you need to make it more elaborate, go ahead. But, for most people, it makes the game too tedius for the first while. Specially for n00bs who are still getting the hang of things. This in turn limits people who want to play, as we end up not having any fresh blood. They just simply get fed up.
IMHO, I\'m fine with whatever system they decide to implement: I don\'t plan on being killed often anyhow ;) But in terms of game popularity, there has to be and easier way to get back into the game after being killed.
-
I like the repop-crystal idea that Harwen had but maybe all char should start with a repop-crystal randomly chosen from all repop cities....or maybe not random....maybe just the repop-crystal from the newb town that all new char start from....that would allow all players to be able to repop but if you had traveled a long way you would go all the way back to newb city....
Now to aqcuire NEW repop-crystals from other cities....that would be a chore....some kind of VERY tough quest or EXTREME beast that would require more than a few people..... I think this would be a good enough way to penalize death...if you went all that way and had to start all the way back in newb city that would suck bad but not so bad as to quit the game....and newbs would barely even notice cuz they would just repop in newb city until they learned the ropes and collected there wussy arses some new repop-crystals.....
-
Yeah, what\'s the point in penalties for dying? That just makes the game boring.
I want something in style with progressquests death-system. One of the best systems I\'ve seen in a game yet (I\'m a Mu-fu monk/talking pony lvl 34 by the way).
In PQ you just lose some XP when you die. You dont have to respawn somewhere else or boring things like that, you just fight on.
Dying just ruins the fun of powerleveling a character because you have to walk all the way back to the powerleveling zone where all the ?ber warriors are.
Oh, but I have an idea. Let\'s have teleports in the game so that we can teleport to the PL-zone instead of walking through the world, that would make the game even better!
And I think there should be special PL-zones for
every level so that nobody have to meet monsters stronger than themselfes. I mean, that would mean that you have to cooperate (gasp! 8o ) with other people.
That would be awful, wouldnt it?
I mean, the point in MMORPGs is to show newbies your new mega armor +18, new ?ber-weapon +30 and your cool high level isn\'t it?
EDIT: If you havn\'t figured it out yet, this reply is sarcasticly meant. :P

That\'s plain silly fenomatic2000. As is powergaming.
PS is a mmoRPg!
-
Or maybe u just lose part of u\'r soul? You are repawned in the nearest temple, where you have to pay a priest to summon the part of u\'r soul back. The amount depends on u\'r lvl. While a part of u\'r soul is missing, say u get -1 on every stat. If u die when u\'ve already got some missing u then have -2 on u\'r stats. This way newbies\'ll have to pay like 100 tria to get restored, and uber people 100000 tria. This way everyone can afford.
-
That\'s a very simple solution, but efficient. The only problem would be that one could respawn just like 10(or sth) times or his attributes would get negative!
-

*sigh* I knew it
There is already something planned if you die. Something about a death-world which you must break out of in order to revive your character.
This means that you cannot just respawn in nearest town with just some XP-loss as a penalty. There was some old thread about this, but unfortunaly I couldn\'t find it.
-
It\'s this thread! ;)
-
No, it isn\'t ;)
From the FAQ
I died and lost all my stuff, can I have it back?
After dying your char will travel in the Death Realm, and if you can get out of there you will have your items and money back.
That should keep people from dying.
-
just have a limit on how much u\'r attributes can drop by. Anyway, most people wont die 10x in a row, without getting their stats back.
-
Okay here\'s my take on the situation.
- First of all THERE MUST BE A PENALTY, otherwise dying becomes meaningless and powergamers get all the fun.
To acomplish this penalty I can think of two ways to do it.
1 When you die you become a ghost semi-transparent to yourself but complete invisible to everyone else. (no actions but moving, and no walking through walls, maybe speed increased to x4, and letting the player fly) Then you should have to seek out a temple to be revived. You goto the temple and pray then your given a list of options. The different options can have different prices like revival wich will return your soul to your body with 5% hp, or revival in temple wich will bring your body to you and revive you in the temple, etc... This would be pretty nice for rp value since it would be like almost a pack with the gods to live again. Maybe even your ghost could seek out a high level priest an be able to comunicate with and ask for a revival or make a deal or something.
2 Or you should just respawn at the temple automatically with an xp penalty, but without the chance of going down in levels (very anoying) This way people will not freek out about loosing levels, but they also wont be fearless to fight anything they want on the odd chance they\'ll luck out and get mega xp.
I think that no matter what it should be a given that you can stay in your corpse dead and wait till someone decides to respawn you. If you don\'t want to wait then you go with whatever other respawn option is chosen.
I\'d like to not that I\'m strongly agaist the \"purgatory\" type ideas where you get sent to an alternative relm and have to complete a task. THIS IS THE MOST BORING THING IMAGENABLE. All it does is force a player to do something THAT THEY DON\'T WANT. I usually imediatley stop playing a game as soon as I run into this. It is really not fun at all in the slightest bit. Sure maybe if you make it only last 2 minutes at the max it\'s tolerable, but anything else is not fun.
But yeah to conclude I feel the most important thing is to have some sort of penalty whatever it maybe, as long as it doesn\'t take the fun out of the game.
-
Realy I\'d be happy with a strip them of 5% of their xp type deal without leveling them down. THis would prevent people from not caring about dying and it would also, not depress them like loosing stats and levels does.
.... Oh geeeeezeee I just made an idot of myself. Lol I\'ve been raving so much about how this game rules because there are no levels.
Just ignor this. I think i\'m going to take a nap.
-
When you die, you fall to the ground, your corpse becomes a lifeless object there. (Possibly a bit smelly after a while).
Your spirit \'ascends\' (or \'decends\') to a spirit world, where you must somehow cleverly escape to get back to your body in the physical world.
Your physical body would be an embodiment of your spirit, ie, your character is the same in both worlds.
This could give the biggest penalty of them all, an annoying journey out of the spirit world. So learn not to die you little newbies ;)
Seriously though, this could even open up new horizons with other races. (An entirely spirit world race? Able to channel their energies and appear in the physical world.)
Sorry, it\'s halloween, maybe I\'m just in the fever.
-
hmm, Kalzraq\'s idea\'s the best so far. Just losing some stats until u get a priest to give them back is quite perfect I think.
-
Personally, I don\'t like death penalties because it results in a lot of waiting around or time sinks or loss of valuable experience. The best way that I have seen is in Earth and Beyond where you experience a small experience debt that gets paid off at the rate of 50% of the experience earned or goes away by itself over time. Thus, you can log out of the game for a day and eliminate the penalty.
-
i like Ranegyn\'s method of being a ghost and having to fly either to a temple and having to get them to bring you back. or flying to a near by healer and bugging them to resurect you.
i also like the idea of having multiple ways to bring you back.
i could also live with a peneltys, or a purgatory as long as it doesn\'t take to much time to get out of
-
I have always been a fan of being sent to the afterlife - whether that be one, or multiple places.
-
i like the death plane as well
-
i think that when u die u should come back undead(so u can\'t kill ur self) and u have to do a quest to gain back ur life essence. then and only then can u become alive again.
-
because, just like in real life, the chance of death makes life just THAT much sweeter.

My afterlife idea is, that there are 3 seperate places. the White afterlife, the Grey afterlife and the black afterlife. several factors would determine where you went (Race, Class, deeds done, etc.) you would not be able to leave this place for set amount of time (make it long enough to discourage dying but not so long as to discourage risk taking) then to get out, you would have to pass a series of somewhat difficult tasks, given to you by the deity of the plane. white tasks would be a series of protection tests, helpful tests and loyalty tests, grey would be knowledge tests, games of chance and physical tests, and black would be brutality tests, corruption tests and wicked chance games. only then can you be rezzed

my idea:
When you die you not just respawn...
If you\'re marked as a criminal when you died you will go to the hell! In the hell you\'ll need to do verious things...just work! Like mining or something and when you have enough ore you can buy your freedom with it.. This will cost you like 30 minutes!
When you die when you\'re not marked as a criminal you\'ll go to the heaven! Here you just wait 30 minutes...In the main time you can talk with other death people, talk with NPC elves etc.
When you\'re ready (heaven = 30 minutes and hell = finished with your \"work\") You\'ll respawn at a temple! You\'ll lose all your items you currently had with you..exept for special items that you\'ll never lose like house keys and bank keys etc. Items stored at these banks and houses will still be there, so from time to time you\'ll need to save some money/items at a safe location! Please note that this 30 minutes is pretty long.. in the hell its your own fault.. but there must be something to do in the heaven! Like mini-games... when you\'re in heaven or the hell you can\'t communicate with other players exept the other deaths!!
when you\'re in the hell or in the heaven you could be summoned by another online player! You can visit an temple and summon the deaths! When you do this there will be picked an death out randomly! Than this death person will be come life as a sort of ghost! He can fly but when he goes to far away from his summoner he\'ll be send back to heaven! Anyway...This ghost can attack other people, when he do this he will send THAT player to th hell/heaven and the ghost will go back to the earth!
-
It would get pretty boring if you have to wait for 30 minutes. Maybe if it were a shorter period.
I like the hell or heaven idea. But how is decided who goes to which place? I might play a very evil character imposing to be good. And end up in heaven :)
-
I think the inverse world was a good idea
except not an item finding quest that would be a little annoying.....
instead i think people should come back in the world the exact place they died. then they would have to find the exit which would be nice if it was inside the burning lava pit or the crystal...lol dive through the fire into the crystal..... then fight some of the guardians there like the reaper. once you finish you would most likely come right back where you left... losing money randomly and exp when you die is just stupid.... all your items should drop with your body...if a thief decides to come and pick up something then that is their business...this quest would probably be hard but doable for one person because what if you die and no one else does.... you would be screwed
i dunno i say we just wait to see what the team comes out with first
-
my idea is that when you die, you are brought back to live in the main town. the penalty is that you loose everything in your inventory that is not needed for quests. (so all equipment you are wearing, keys and potions will still be on you).
Then the death penalty is you are not able to leave town for 1 hour of being online. This would force people to get into their RP jobs, instead of going to battle again right away and get killed once again. that way people die less, and you would also do something with your chosen job, else some people will just choose a job, and then go off fighting/adventuring and never return to their job.
with this:
-people will actually do their job sometimes.
-no n00bs that keep going suicidal against monsters way to strong for them
-people wont lose too valuable items since those will be either in bank or equipt so these wont be lost.
-not a to big penalty for dying, since no money, exp loss, that strong item you had been working for several months wont be lost.
tought maby the penalty could be increased a bit bu losing some money, or 1/2/3/4 equiped items or so.
-
well... if it costs you 1 hour, you will think twice nxt time before attacking a monster again that is way to powerfull for your current char.
-
yah but it takes away from the myth plus walking through a different world also takes time
-
it is always possible to change it an idea. i just had this made this one.
-
I agree a death penalty is a hassle, but if its made like this what choice do you really have? What I really don\'t like is the idea of escaping a underworld, finding your body back in the real world to become one again! What if a group of people are camping your body and continually rip you apart everytime you come back to life? That would make for a messy day...
-
hmm... i agree... that way if you get killed in the pvp-zone (i am positive that the devs will make one of those) you will become a livling corpse.... and what if you get killed by fighting a to strong monster?? if you then get back to live you will get raped again by that monster.
-
A way to fix that would be to be portaled a screen over from your original death spot once you return to your body..That way you can get a head start on escaping or recovering or whatever your next plan of action is...Though they can just toss that whole idea away and go with respawning without having to find the body!
-
i dont know what game this was, but it was an online game. there was also much the same system like PS. if you died there you were respawned right away in the nearest town. This worked great since there was a death penalty of losing 50% of your gold, but for the rest you kept everything. Ofc no-one ever went to the pvp zone there since you couldn\'t gain anything there on items. But the system there was that if your overall lvl was above i tought 60 or so, your number of times died were counted. If you then died 3 times after passing lvl 60 you were again respawned, with all your items in your backpack/bank and your stats, lvl was reset like you just created your char.
plz tell this WONT be in ps cause that system s*cks big-time!
-
I am not sure if this will be implemented , but at a certain time , i rembember hearing of a karama system that make you lose karama points when the difference between your level and the level of the guy you kill is too big , and the penalities are depending ont this difference.
If a level hi level kill a low level , he lose a lot of karama , and he can have difficulties to get quests from npcs , and items may become more expensive. That s the only thing i remember hearing about high level penalities.
Also from what i remember this was only studies fro PvP penalities.
-
I like the idea of a permadeath system or losing ALL your stats if you die and maybe keeping your items. This can work in a true role playing game but not in a game like Planeshift. This stops power levelers and people like in this thread that cry because they lose valuable training time...
-
training time is plenty valuable... id rather lose items than my experience...and really you dont just lose strength because you are dead.... you can lose items though...
-
bah permadeath is a bad idea even for the people that are REALLY into roleplaying...I wouldn\'t care if you lost the exp made for the next level but not everything!
-
perma death is a total waste of time....
and yes i still mind losing exp
-
First of all, WHAT TOOK YOU GUYS SO LONG TO GET SO INTERESTED IN MY POST!?? :D anyways, wow, I\'ve never had a four-page post before! I\'ve been gone like 3 months and its still here! :D Glad to see all your ideas and I\'d just like to point out:
Powergaming = Bad. PS really should and prolly will have punishments for powergamers like some people. No body here sympithises for powergamers, excuse my spelling, its 2.30 am.
Second, extreme death penalties just suck. It make the game frustrating, that way, you can have really hard, and challenging monsters and dungeons and have, hmmm, what was that word, FUN. :]
No serious game, that\'s good, (asheron\'s call sucks, its not very attractive; its uninspired presentation, esoteric setting, clumsy combat system, and cluttered interface make it a bore to play, and that\'s jus the asthetics of the game, I\'m not mentioning its uber-unchallenging combat system and ho-hum attempt at strategy.) No wonder mr. powergamer likes it, its easy.
Anyways, PS isn\'t such a crappy game as to include such a MAJOR flaw. And yes, a frustrating death system is considered a flaw.
I made a mistake earlier, I\'ve found simplicity is the best road to a dying system.
You Die, you\'re a ghost, you go re-form at that purple-fountain thingie in the Temple. Of course you lose some experience, and maybe a chunk of your pocket change. Sure, you have to take a trip to the nearest temple, and you can\'t all but whisper to a person though your psychadellic ghost powers but hey, at least you don\'t lose your stat points, sheesh.
*Edit: Perma Death sucks big time too, and so does losing your stats, I thank Talad, that some of you aren\'t Devs, wait, no I wouldn\'t play your game, hehe :D
-
huge penalties for death are just annoying people...
although id rather fight my way out of an afterlife, some people probably wouldnt be able to escape unless they run...which would be a big portion of the people there....considering they died....
i dont want to have a retarded unexplained revival eitehr..... who has the time to go running around a cave reviving everyone as soon as they die
-
Word to that, fighting your way out of the underworld would be kinda fun. Sorta reminds me of fighting Shades of Hades when you die in this old rpg I made.
-
the problem is either people will have to help others out or the monsters would have to be kinda weak, the most deaths will be from the weakest people.... so they wouldnt be able to kill powerful monsters...unless the monsters powerwaws based on the characters level
-
I have another idea on death;
First, it should be possible to avoid death, but at a very high price, I mena like the rincarnation Ankh in warcraft 3.
Maby you could go to a temple and buy pre-emptive reincarnation from the preist, which would trigger instantly when you died and respawned you at the altar of the temple in which you acuired it.
The altar in any temple would become the respawn point for a sector.
Developing on the afterlife idea, but including penalties as well;
When you die, you become a wraith. no one can see you, you drop all items, clothing, weapons, everything corpoal, which you attacker can simply claim as his own, or your teammates can pick up for you.
In this wrait form, you move about the world as usual, but you cant interact in any way with anything. you can\'t move anywhere you couldn\'t normally (walkign through walls would almost encourage you to die!)
you can\'t open doors. to pass through a doorway, you would need to wait for someone to open it for you.
The ideea is, in this wraith form, you make your way slowly back to the temple in the sector. once in the temple, you become visible and can communicate with other players, but still cant interact with anything. your job is to persuade the NPC preist in the temple to reincarnate you, which he would do at the altar.
This is a simple and serverspace eficient afterlife. And i think loosing all clothing items and weapons to the victor of findor is enough of a punishment. it would also give players in a PvP situation the chance to retreive the spoils of battle.
please tell me what you think.
-
what if no one ever opens doors or they seal you in or you were alone.... what if you are no where near a temple.... then you would be stuck a while just sitting in different rooms waiting for doors and if some turd closes the temple doors
