Title: Complete Game Release?
Post by: SolidWing68 on November 03, 2003, 03:17:11 am
I remember when this game was in pre-alpha like 10 months ago, and now it\'s a tech demo? when will it go complete.?

Never

Yes, most likely never.  Since it will always grow and change,  the idea of  \'finished\' does not really apply here.  We are planning a new release to add new features by the end of the year.  With each new release more and more features/quests/items/NPCs will be added.  This can continue for a long time yet.

So... you\'re saying it was pre-alpha before and now it\'s a tech demo.
Well guess what? It\'s been a pre-alpha tech demo for a while.

I\'d like to know too... when is the game gonna be more playable and when will all the features and races be available?

As it is now, it\'s kinda hard to play cause of lag. When will that be (more or less) fixed?

in the next release the lag will be less so they are saying, and otherwise try to play in windowed 32 bit and 1024 x 768, it\'s the only size i can use to play as good as lagless.

you need a good 3d card and lots of memory in the way it is now.

But if you want to know WHEN the next update is released, it\'s scheduled to be in December. I personally can\'t wait, because as is, it\'s one of the best mmorpg\'s and combat isn\'t even implemented yet...but will be in Crystal Blue! (CB)

Pro MMORPGs take 4-5 years with 40-100 fulltime people.

Planeshift has about 10 part time people.  You do the math.

Yeah thats a big difference! But lets be real here Veng, no one wants to wait that long I mean we are using patience as it is! Maybe you could ask ps players to help get devs for some sort of momentary prize or something!.................................*SLOWLY GOING CRAZY WHILE WAITING!!!*

You get what you pay for. If you can\'t be patient long enough for the dev team to create the game, find another.

That\'s a really bad idea and I\'m sure it won\'t take you long to figure out why. :P

Actually the community is doing the best work possible: being so nice and friendly.

Encouragment are important too.

Oi, I can\'t believe it\'s gonna take that long! It\'s torment!!

*sob*

Oh well, it\'s gonna be worth the waiting time. :) I can feel it.

As Moogie said, that\'s a horrible idea. Most people don\'t realize how little they know of programming. Plus, prizes would attract lots of people that just wants the prize, and aren\'t really interested in the development of Planeshift.

Someone told me that characters are gonna be deleted on updates... sigh.. oh well, since I can\'t play yet anyways I guess I can live with it. :-/ For now.......

Besides... my character \"Beatie\" was kinda quick made and probably really lame too.

All the characters will be deleted before CB. But, you will most likely be able to reserve your name :)

Post by: Beatie on November 04, 2003, 07:33:08 pm
Cool! It will delete  the character, right? Not just reset  it? Cause I might wanna choose a diff race and stuff.

It\'s not called a \'database wipe\' for nothing, Beatie. ;)

Well, I didn\'t know it was called that =P

But I don\'t care, really... I mean, combat and some skills r gonna be implemented in december and thats just gonna be awesome. As long as that\'s in the game, I\'m fine really...

AND HEALING SPELLS I HOPE!

I thought that feature was reserved to people \"known\" to PlaneShift, not for everyone...? But then again, I never seem to figure what Venge means until he actually tells it to me word by word... :P

Edit: Silly spelling. :)

Yes, but you have support of the crystalspace engine and we all know that PS devs are more skilled and more motivated than payed ones... ;)

Maths are slightly different now :D

Kiern: reaven did the math: 16-50years. That\'s how he meant t\'will never be finished.

Elscouta: if the given equation was right(ya sure) then the difference would not matter much. They\'d have to get/update the engine constantly and with time they would grow less motivated(probably).

I think there was a statement how long they think it will take them to \"finish\" it on the main page...

You know, when you are a part of a coding team, you spend a lot of time trying to understand what your teammates did and how you can use them. Using an external engine is not so different.

And i still don\'t think that a commercial project with 40~100 people goes 10x faster than a free project with 4~10 people. Why? Because PS doesn\'t have (and don\'t really need), commercials, testers (we are here for that, aren\'t we? ;)), managers... Ok, there is only 10 members in the PS team, but these people work on PS, not on ads nor trying to find who isn\'t enough productive...

That\'s also why they don\'t want to invite everybody in the dev team. A low-skilled teammate can waste the time of all the PS team.

engine: well yea, but I meant they\'d have to replace/reintegrate it over and over, cause the technology would advance if it took them so much time.

I noted that the eq probably wasn\'t excact. But there\'s also the thing that developing for them is their hobby and that they have to do full-time(i guess) jobs as well.

Broken compatibilities don\'t occur so often in libraries. I think that the backend function of CS will keep improving while the major party of the public functions will stay. And if new features are added, adding them in PS will not take really more time than if the engine was develloped inside PS. And some devellopers of PS are also contributors of CS (according of what i hear in the dev chan)...

Sure, but i don\'t think that they work on PS only two hours per week ;)

Saying there are only 10 devs isn\'t really fair for estimating the game progress, because even possibly starting with the next update, and as the game becomes more... well... a game, it is more likely that experienced devs may find the game and decide to help out on it.  Which is certainly one of the best points of it\'s open sourceness.

Not only is it not exact, it is entirely incorrect :)  Take a look at \"The Mythical Man Month\" by Frederick P. Brooks (you can probably find it at the library) to understand why.  :)

Ah, sorry. By eq I meant equation(Venge\'s). Since it\'s false(we can\'t make it follow the general model), it\'s useless to discuss things (anymore)- since all was based on it...

You were right... partially;)

Bah, we\'ll see...

edit: major

No idea actually. Now that you mention it...

My tipp to the programmers: bring out a little piece of the PS map where player can do all (fight, trade, talk, live  (houses) ,cast spells,........). with piece i mean Hydlaa + another city + a few dungeons. i think then is the game cool! after that the programmers make the world slowly bigger... then in >50 years ( ;D ) all is finished.

There\'s two different main parts in creating a mmorpg: making the code and making the world. These two tasks are different and generally not done by the same people so you can\'t say \'doing a fully done small map then increase it later\'
