I am leaving PlaneShift. It is nothing against the game, or the community. It is for real religious purposes. It had been heavily weighing on my mind since i joined The Folowers of Laanx. It is not only PlaneShift i am forsaking, i am forsaking every game that includes Magic, False Gods, or glorifies any sin. Just because i am leaving for these reasons, doesn\'t mean i\'m pressuring other Christian Gamers to do the same. There is a convincing debate on the subject here
http://eden.org/g2gforums/index.php?showtopic=1579
I Wish all of you good luck, and i am sorry for any incoveniences this may cause. I will not post here for any reason, so you Cabali don\'t try and anger me into coming back.
Farewell, Jeremy
Edit: :( i am already braking my promise to fix the url.

There are a couple other articles I have read relating to religion in games. I found them both interesting (I am a Christian as well), simply because it makes you rethink a few things. Anyway, if you\'re interested in reading them, here they are:
http://diabloii.net/columnists/fortuitous16.shtml
http://diabloii.net/columnists/fortuitous17.shtml
Yes, it\'s a DiabloII site, but don\'t let you stop you; both articles cover a lot of ground.
Note: I\'m not trying to change anyone\'s opinion here, I\'m just offering some material for those interested in the subject.
A quick quote from the article
In closing I\'d just like to call everyone back to the idea of perspective. We are, after all, just talking about a game. It isn\'t reality and therefore should only be a small aspect of our lives that we turn to for entertainment. Whether you let it be more than that is up to you and the choices that you make. Henry Ford once said, \"Whether you believe that you can, or you can\'t, you are right\". I\'d like to take that concept a step further and say \"whether you believe that fantasy RPGs are evil or good, you are right\".
-
I haven\'t read the articles but this is my own opinion on what would drive someone like Skwirl to leave:
Glorification of sin: Not that there is any in this game, but this creates a perception of something bad being good, and though this may never lead to action, it may lead to turning away from the correct choices (more of a form of inaction)
Magic: Have any of you ever had the slightest little feeling of wanting to use magic yourself? However, in most religions, magic is a sin, but how can you say that you wouldn\'t want magic in real life after seeing it in so many games?
Those are the reasons I thought of just now.

Actually I\'m kinda afraid it has more to do with this... (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=6268&boardid=15&styleid=3&sid=ec96ed30c982d7427693f0186fc9d181)
He got quite offended in one of the subsequent post and I\'m afraid Josanator wasn\'t very respectful of his opinion. It wasn\'t long after that this thread arose.
(Trust me I\'ve been watching forums all day ^^)

O_o coz\' of some half-wit making up a retarded story that has nothing to do with this game???

Some people take certain stresses differently. Lets respect Skwirl\'s choice. I\'m sure it had more to do than that.

My favorite subject. A chance to lash out against Christianity. Ok let me start off by saying that I was born Catholic, I attended church as a child. I have been going to Catholic schools since third grade.
My point here is not to offend anyone, but express my beliefs. So I will go out and say it. Christianity is a crock. Study history, I mean real history, not just what teachers teach you. If you do you will realize how much Christianity borrowed from other religions (Well in truth Judaism borrowed these beliefs from it\'s roots in Mesopotamia, but Christianity is an extension on Judaism) You will even find out the source of many of the Old Testament stories such as Moses. There was an Egyptian Pharoah by the name of Moses who started the belief in one God, granted it was Ra, but out of that springs the story of Moses. Anyway I\'m getting off topic. A lot of the Old Testament is borrowed from religions that existed around the roots of Judaism. Noah, Genesis, all borrowed. The New Testament however is harder to clarify. The only proof of Jesus and such is based on faith. Faith is a hard thing to base on arguement on, from both sides. My belief is that a man, maybe a teacher existed. I do not however believe he was divine. I believe that the Church has glorified his status. One of the biggest debates is if he even died a virgin (Mary Magdeline sp?). Anyway I better end this as I could go on all day. Again I didn\'t mean to offend anyone, we all have our own beliefs.
Christianity is and always has tried to stick it\'s neck into issues it shouldn\'t have anything to do with. I\'m not singling it out, nearly every religion does this.
Skwirl, sorry to see you go, especially over such a pointless debate.

The story was really dumb...
-
He has a right to post whatever story he wants, and if you look at every other story none of them follow the Planeshift world to the letter. And he never says that the jesus in his story is the same from Christianity.
-
Well i have many things i doubt about most religons but since this is Christianity i make 2 small points.
1) if Mary was a virgin and got pregnat with jesus dont you think marys husband whould accuse her of cheating?
2) jesus drank from loads of cups mugs ect so how do you work that the last one is somehow holy compared to the rest of them?

Well, I\'m not sure that god really thinks that way SkwirlDude . A game is a game, I\'m pretty sure he (or she) understands that :P
\"God is sitting up in his ivory tower, tired and worn out. He\'s had enough of the pressures and stresses of being the number one, so he\'s decided to take a holiday. He calls all his super-being mates together to discuss a few suggestions.
St. Peter, thinking, nods his head, then says, \"How about Mars? It\'s nice and warm there this time of year.\" God shakes His head before answering, \"Nah I went there 15,000 years ago. It was shit, no atmosphere and too dusty.\"
\"What about Pluto?\" suggests another. \"No way!\" God mutters. \"I went there 10,000 years ago. ****ing freezing it was too.\"
\"What about Mercury?\" says another. \"Are you kidding?\" says God. \"I went there 5,000 years ago, I nearly burnt me bollox off it was that hot, never again.\"
\"I\'ve got it,\" says St. Peter, his face lighting up. \"How about going down to Earth for your vacation?\"
\"You must be joking,\" says God, chuckling, \"I went there 2,000 years ago, knocked up some Jewish bird, and they\'re STILL bloody talking about it.\" :D \'
A sin you\'re leaving 8)
Edited for language.

@Aendar
Everyone is entitled to their opinion (except for whoever it was that posted that horrible, tasteless story). I would look at your statement and suggest that the events happened, and were simply recorded differently by different people. Sounds logical enough to me :)
@Seperot
1) I\'m sure many people (especially today) would have a hard time believing divine intervention over scandalism, but I guess he was just a trusting kinda guy.
2) The \"Holy Grail?\" What has that got to do with anything?
@Fanomatic
I really don\'t think this is the best place for religious jokes
-
religion is the root of all evil... \'nuff said...
-
Random fact: Christanity named there underworld after the norse goddes of death whos name was hel
-
Uesless fact:
Christian priests seem to think that they can break the 10 commandments whenever they want. (aka the \'holy\' crusades)
-
Christianity a religion that pursecuted soo many people for their beliefs, a religion that was hypocritical and encouraged oppression. A religion that is corrupt even today. How can anyone possibly follow it!
Christianity even stole all of its holidays and symbols thats how bull it is. ALL of their symbols were pagan in origin (Of course, if you want to get sticky about pagan symbols, the fish symbol was used for Dagon (whence comes many of the attacks on the Pope, who wears a \"fish-hat\"), while the Dove (the popular symbol of the Holy Spirit) was sacred to Astarte, Ishtar and Aphrodite.
The image of the Dove reborn out of the mouth of the Dolphin was quite a common Mediterranean pagan image .... and the word \"jonah\" means \"dove.\"
Ring any bells?
Even the Latin for \"catacomb,\" the tombs under Rome, was \"columbaria,\" which means \"dovecote.\" )
Proportions of the New testement contradict themselves. And im not even gonna bother with the old testement. The Stories make no sense, metephors u say? so Noah is a metaphor for a vengeful god that likes to wipe out the whole populace for not believing!?
I wont say any more because i could continue this all day, but ur reasons for leaving imho ...ahh screw it, i just cant understand u, as vicious once said \'I don\'t believe, there is no need to believe\'
Edit: Im not saying im against your beliefs or am trying to be deragatory in any way...

Whoa, fellas.....
I\'m not religious myself, but this is not a good time to split our gaming community with a religious debate.....
Skwirl left. He left for Christianity\'s sake. No different really than leaving for Ru... Ru.... that other game, or because he\'s depressed in RL, or... well, whatever.....
This thread was not meant to continue. He will *not* be back to read the good-byes, and it is *certainly* not an invitation to debate Christianity vs. atheism/agnosticism/other religions.
I very fervently request a mod lock/delete this topic as this can do nothing but cause a rift in our small gaming community, and that is the last thing we need. This thread was dedicated to the loss of one. Let\'s not expand it and cause the loss of many...
Thanks to people like Davis/Xandria/Savion who were open-minded and understanding. No offense to anyone else, just please get off it.
-
dang well no one is hit by this as hard as me. swirldude is my best recruit in the followers of laanx. with out swirldude im not sure the guild can last much longer.... ;( this sucks...
-
*ticks guild off the list*
Yes, someone close this.
-
Makes our job so much easier...
-
come off it xand just because the bible makes it all look trusting in them times if a woman was pregnant and her husband had not done it with her they whould call her a whore and throw her out. they done it years befor why whould they all of a sudden stop for awhile befor turning back?
-
Maybe this thread should be closed. I\'m all up for religious freedom and speaking your mind but this might get ugly.
-
did i say something offencive i hope not i just dont know my religius offenceiv terms
i aplogies in advanced
-
I think that religion, like many other topics, can be debated perfectly fine, if everyone involved:
1) Trusts one another
2) Listens to other people\'s ideas openly (without getting angry)
3) Expresses their ideas without fear of backlash
4) Doesn\'t try to impose their opinion on anyone else
5) Understands that it is just a calm discussion
One of the things I miss about high school, was this group of friends that I had that would often debate many issues (religion was a common one, because we had some Christians, some Muslims, and some aetheists). And they were really interesting conversations to listen to, because they followed all the above points, and it just worked out very well.
HOWEVER, I do not believe this is at all possible on these forums, and I strongly suggest that this thread be closed immediately before something really terrible happens. :(
