Hi,
My wife just turned me on to this organization and this story in particular. It is from a forum for people who are online gaming addicts.
Story of an EQ Addict (http://pub136.ezboard.com/folgafrm4.showMessage?topicID=46.topic)
I thought this might spark some recognition or at least interesting discussions. Pretty disturbing stuff.

Wow...that is a really sad story. What\'s even sadder is that if I had the money I would probably be playing online games just as much as he did. And, though not as severe, I had an addiction to online roleplaying like that. I would spend up to 8 hours a day just roleplaying online. Really makes you think.
-
cant access that page, stupid filters >.<
8 hours a day isnt realy that much, up untill a few weeks ago i was spening that much time on mmorpg, untill i quit it coz i needed to find a new game an my net access time got cut in half >.<
Some games can be pretty adictive and if uve got lots of free time and nothing to do you end up playing them for hours.
-
I feel ashamed, and I am considering quiting everything I ever joined, or played...honestly.
-
Wow, I\'ve heard some crazy EQ stories, but that\'s absolutely insane. I mean, I could see myself spending a *little* too much time playing games if/when I have a family (which is why what I look for in a relationship is a woman who can slap me around a bit when needed :P ), but I don\'t see how anyone could get so involved in a game that they completely ignore real life.
I\'m sure it\'s possible, but it just doesn\'t seem real. Too bad for that poor guy though...
-
The ingame marriages thing *looks knowingly at a dozen or so members* XD
meridious in that thread had it right \'\'Until then, I will maintain my belief that online gaming is not addictive, and those who can replace their real lives with an RPG, ignoring cries from help in all directions, losing their families while tapping a keyboard...I maintain my belief that there is a real, emotional/mental issue that is the root.\'\'
me thinks I better go phone my girlfriend...

8 hours isn\'t much? 8o
Back when I actually played, I spent maybe 30mins to an hour at most on those.

It\'s a lot but it\'s not crazy. During vacations, i\'m a lot more on my PC (even if i don\'t play EQ)
-
when i am on vaction its not abnomrmal for me to spend a whole day on eq, tough i am only in highschool, and there aren\'t any people around me to go see.Perhaps thats my xcuse. w/e the fact is i am not that bad anymore
-
Its hard only to play for 30 mins, alot of people i know play all day every day(coz they dont have jobs yet)
a single \'guild hunt\' on a mmorpg i used to play could take upto 10 hours(the extreme 1s), ppl would just sit in one place for hours waiting for their turn at killing a boss mobb.
its seen as the usual thing for players to hours waiting, any less than 2/3 hrs is seen as unusual.
people would also play for 20 hours straight or more in a big group of people every so often.
-
8 hours? I was doing 15 in the summer holidays....... Obviously I\'m the odd one out.......
-
Well at least he didn\'t die like that guy in Korea, or wherever it was (some guy played a video game until he died from starvation or something, I forget what game). I rarely spend more than five hours on any game, MMORPG or not.
My wife just turned me on to this organization and this story in particular.
Hehehe, I hope she just don\'t turn you in, coz\' we need you :D .

It\'s sad really, that people can\'t control such addictions.. As for myself, I hardly spend more than 8 hours a week in anarchy.. There are other, more important aspects of life, than enjoying oneself, but once you get really into it it\'s hard to get out..
-
It\'s all about priorities, if you think that gaming is more important than family and friends, well.. you have to \"discover\" your addiction before it\'s to late.

exactly.. that\'s why it\'s sad that some people fall too deep into these addictions and don\'t realize until it\'s too late..
-
Actually a lot of it is people like me that are naturally kind of \"loners\" and this gives them an excuse to be social and anti-social at the same time.
Now I always quit games when I get really addicted, but I\'ve had some bad ones.
When I was in the NWN online community over the summer I was like Xordan, pulling 15+ hour days.
8/day wasn\'t bad for me in high school (from when I got out of school till I went to bed) on my last MUD.
My uncle played that same MUD except he worked 50-60 hours a week, travelled internationally, and still put in more time than I did (generally 10-12 hours). Within the last month he walked out on his family.
I can really easily get addicted to non-practical things that challenge my mind a bit more than waisting time with friends (probably why I play piano and am majoring in philosophy). So I didn\'t even finish the article cause it hit too close to home.
Actually one of the guys in my guild is not playing PS right now because he\'s \"weaning\" himself from an addiction to an online game. This is scary. I\'m gonna shut up now. :D
-
Is the rumor true a guy killed himself because of EQ?
I think mmorpg\'s should be limited only to the time that is UNOCCUPIED. That was this man\'s mistake.
-
I wouldn\'t doubt the rumor, and the fact is you can make all of your time \"unoccupied\" or \"occupied\" just the same depending on your priorities. Hell, if I weren\'t engaged in a guilds-forum debate I\'d be off practicing the piano or hanging out at the fraternity house. But that\'s neither here nor there...
-
This story is just... Terrifying. :(
-
You have to realize what is important to you before you have the addiction. Write it down, anything, schedule it. Some of these games are just plain too fun. I never want to have to read another one of these stories again. It truly was horrifying.

I just got this e-mail from DragonRaja and found it quite appropriate to this thread:
Dearest Heroes,
The days of early to bed and early to rise, along with eating at the right hours
and all other mundane daily tasks will be a thing of the past. In fact, most the
only time you?ll need to think about food is when your online character?s hunger
bar flashes red, but it won?t ease your hunger pangs either. But you?ll
definitely quench your thirst for adventure with the return of the hugely
successful Dragon Raja title instead one of the most played massive multiplayer
online role playing game (MMORPG) in Malaysia and the rest of the world.

Maybe ADD has it\'s advantages then I guess :D .
-
LOL I\'m such a freakin\' addict I thought of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons before I got around to thinking Attention Deficit Disorder
-
If you don\'t think 8 hrs a day is a lot, you are an addict.
There is really no other activity anyone does 8 hrs a day. Even people with jobs move from task to task and go to lunch and chitchat and try to go home early.
People with OLGA are looking for ways to _extend_ their hours--not quit early.
-
i play more than 8 hrs a day and im not an addict, i just have nothing better to do.

That\'s what they all say. ;)
-
You are an addict, if you cant live without online games, go on vacation and cant wait till you get home and slay that annoying n00bert. Luckly im not an online game addict, but planeshift could change that :P
-
lol, when NWN came out, I made myself have nothing to do, and played for a day non-stop. But then the after-effects came in, and I slept for about a day. So it not worth it. If u do play like that every day, and even stop u\'rself sleeping, then that\'s addicted. :D

Sleeping at least ;)
And i\'m near 8h of maths studies per day. And i\'m not an addict to studies. I can even say i *hate* them.
-
I don\'t see how anyone can do anything 8 hours a day.
I get bored pretty quickly and do something else. If I do play something too much the whole thing gets boring and I end up leaving after a week.
Of course, even with frequent changes of activity, I sometimes still never get around to my homework, but that\'s the way it goes...

I hear you man! :D
I never play the same game 8 hours a day. I may spend 8 hours online during the weekends, but not the same stuff. Ill go from here to a MMORPG and then to Socom Online and then ill go outside its a routine kind of. And somehow homework never gets done. :P
-
You would be able to if you played the right game.
i played one game for 8 months for more than 8 hours a day, but i did have more time then an less things to do.
if i wasnt playing games id only be watching tv or sumthing an thats even less constructive.
Im currently gameless atm tho :( but i work on my server for 8 hours...and im not addicted to that.
