Title: Development Log
Post by: Fallen Angel on November 23, 2003, 02:37:36 am
I thought of something that I feel the main site is missing - a development log.

I know this will require alot of work with constant updating but im very sure alot of people would lke to see how the development of the game is progressing, what is planned fo development, official release dates etc.

I know the last piece of news on the main page said that the programmers had added spell casting and updated graphics etc. but what I was hoping for was a little bit more descriptive indepth bit on what will be in CB.
eg. What skills will be implemented in CB...

I just cant wait for Christmas for the realease of CB cant wait to see what is in it - i would love some light shed on it

Yeah, and we could also ask them to put a webcam, to see how fast they\'re typing the code and when they are working on it !

Come on, let\'s not start this Carmack .plan stuff here, I think they already have enough work on their hands. If you really want to see what is progressing, you can check the history in the CVS repository  ;)  They regulary post news about the development progress in this forum, too.

All I wanted to suggest is making an official page or something that everyone knows is there rather than just posting what they are working on in the forums - I mean it\'ll be much easier to find if there is a page for it.

It makes sense...

They\'ve done development progress on the AB and MB releases...I don\'t see why not this one as well (once it gets closer that is)

I must disagree on this point. I find it way more exciting to log on one day, and find it saying \"CB has been released! Download now!\", instead of it saying \"5 minutes, 38 seconds left until you can play with these 6 diffrent monsters, these 11 new characters, these 8 new weapons these 4 new skills these 12 different loots and these 20 new commands.\" Kinda ruins the fun about waiting.

Besides, telling people what they\'re gonna get, before it has actually been done, just raises false hopes in case they just don\'t get it anyways, and it\'ll make others whine because they don\'t get what they want.

I personally enjoy waiting and not knowing better than waiting, and then not getting even though they said it would be.

For those of you who REALLY want to know exactly what is happening, just make a link to history.txt (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/planeshift/planeshift/docs/history.txt) which is located in the CVS repository.

Every time a dev makes an update the the Planeshift code, he/she will typically add a comment to the file to tell what he/she did.  (Most recent entries are located at the top of the file)

NOTE: This is an extremely detailed file, so if you don\'t understand what exactly a dev means in their comment, don\'t go asking all over the boards.  If you\'re particularly interested in a specific comment, you can ask a dev in the IRC channel #planeshift on irc.freenode.net to see if they know what it means.

Also, don\'t expect anyone to go through this file every day and update a webpage with everything that happened that day.  If someone does, then they have way too much free time on their hands. :P

Committing patch by JacobBrown for stronger password authentication.
Also password widget now shows **** instead of actual password.
It\'s good to know they fixed that...

I keep one of those too (http://idev111.ioaxis.com/~delid111/history.txt)... err sort of anyway.  Grrr, spent most my time this weekend on the damn animation project though...
Title: Heavy stuff
Post by: Fallen Angel on November 27, 2003, 03:06:39 am
Wow... i\'ve taken a look at that log thing and man its heavy stuff (ie hard to understand) - very informing but way to long for someone who just wants to read about a normal conventional brief explanation of whats happening with the game...i still like the idea of a log updated every week or so - perhaps some extracts from that big as log thing would be useful.
