Title: Weird FPS!
Post by: Kramy on December 08, 2003, 05:57:57 am
Hi, I was just playing PS when I discovered something odd. Please examine the stats below from the tests I ran:

resolution: 640x480
min FPS:     0.2
avg FPS:     4
max FPS:    12

resolution: 800x600
min FPS:     0.4
avg FPS:     9
max FPS:    19

resolution: 1024x768
min FPS:     0.3
avg FPS:     8
max FPS:    21

resolution: 1280x1024
min FPS:     8
avg FPS:     24
max FPS:    36.8

Now is it just me....or is that normal? :P Here I\'ve been playing it low res while I get a WAY higher framerate at the highest res!

My question to the devs is: What the hell? :D
Maybe one of you could shed some light on this.  ;) Thanks!

Edit: Comp Specs
AMD Athlon 2000 1.7ghz
Geforce 2 64mb SDR
256mb DDR
16 bit colour

no telling here, usually at low res you get higher frames due to less rendering. But this is completly backwards. Im thinking that your comp tends to put more effort into the program due to a higher res. But Im no expert nor moderate in knowledge of this field.

If someone would please attemp the same as Krammy here and post results/specs we can see if this is only effecting Krammy or if its global.

I did a quick test to see this.. and yea my comp is strange too.

For my test max fps was determined by looking straight down in 1st person (usually about 10 fps faster than what i actually get max fps for normal gameplay).  Min fps just by walking around, transitions between areas, etc.  Numbers are a bit strange, but like I said, I tested it quickly.

Computer:
AMD 2600+
512 MB DDR RAM
Windows 2k Pro
Geforce 2 MX 64 MB
All tests done in full scrn & 16 bit color.

resolution: 640x480
min FPS: 5
avg FPS: 20
max FPS: 100

resolution: 800x600
min FPS: 10
avg FPS: 20-25
max FPS: 350 <----- :D

resolution: 1024x768
min FPS: 15
avg FPS: 25-30
max FPS: 145

resolution: 1280x1024
min FPS: 10
avg FPS: 20
max FPS: 88

I\'ve got a theory that my computer is having trouble shrinking the models or textures, maybe because they\'re zipped?

Still hoping the devs know why, but this is neat for me. :D

I attained my max FPS by standing and looking at the entire town.
I attained my avg FPS by walking along and seeing what it averages at.
I attained my min FPS in the cellar.(Need more RAM to raise cellar FPS rate)

i dont believe it being zipped has a whole lot to do with your increasing fps at high res. By unzipping the textures and adjusting the location in the config file, it actually puts less strain on your proccessing, thus unzipping should increase fps a bit (but to tell you the truth with PC\'s now days really no point because you won\'t even notice the difference.

I believe i know the deal here.

At low res, the textures are actually sized up not shrunk. If you notice your screen seems smaller at low res (duh) but the textures actually tend to get bigger. This could be what is causing low fps, at low res. less adjusting means more proccessing ^^

Edit: again im no expert nor moderate in this field  :P

Strange..
I couldn\'t run the game at 800x600 for long, so I eventually went for 640x480.
Max FPS=~ 3000

Today I tried 1024x768 and the thing is more smooth, even the temple was \"lag\"less, although
Max FPS=~ 1500
And it froze much later, I did some 10 actions in the session. Almost a record.;(
But it was plain luck.(a second run)

Strange indeed.

well after extracting textures you don\'t get lag while changing sectors... at least in my case...

lynx, how in the name of laanx do you get framerates like that?  the highest i\'ve EVER seen in Ps(staring at the floor on the edge of the map) was about 180.

Maybe he has one of those new video cards with 34gb/sec graphical bandwidth that only costs $2800?

he\'s talking about some problems, maybe he means 30.00 fps and 15.00 fps ;)

Either he means 30.00 or hes running a PC with the new gigabyte motherboard 3 gigs of ddr ram and the ati readeon 9800 xt, of course i havnt tried PS on these specs but i got a friend with them, Mabey ill see what fps i can get from an over clocked, water cooled top of the line box. Should be quite interesting indeed.

I agree completly, i get less lag from extracting the files also but you have to deal with the fence texure being corrupted in the extraction. You can also configure the openGL.cfg file to best performance with your specs, but you should know a bit about what your changing and what it does before you go and start making adjustments.

Mabey we will get lucky and get a explanation of why the FPS tends to rise with high res. I would like to better understand how a higher res can actually make it speed up. Ill try and do a bit of research on this and post my results. (If Any)

haha! No, people, no! I measured the max FPS during world intialization, not ingame. :P

maybe it has somthing to do with PS being a MMORPG and the lag slow down was just a coincidence with the lowering of resolutions and it had more to do with internet Lag.

There is little \"true\" lag. Most of the slowness is due  to the  CS engine. And I don\'t see myself with true lag anyway(128KB/s).

Well, mine is constant...I don\'t count those +-10FPS.

no, i mean i had constant 1000 in past, then I reinstalled OS or something and i have constant 300 fps now :P

The current build of MB in the CS engine does create a global lag. Which im sure they have/are solving for CB. But the transfer between client and server is pretty small, so having broadband doesnt make but a slight difference. I just did a bit of high-low res testing and i get the same results in the 4 times i tried every res. Of course my numbers are slightly different for each time i tried the same res it still came out the same. High Res actually preformed better than low res. i tend to get about 10-20fps (if not more) for every res higher than the last.

I believe they released a new stable version of the CS engine not too long ago. Not sure what all they fixed as i dont keep up with CS as much as i do PS.

hmm? no, not really... i don\'t see any reason of having more fps while all you see is a loading screen ;)
