Here\'s an article of MMORPG interest:
http://www.gamemethod.com/archive/214.php (http://www.gamemethod.com/archive/214.php)
Also, some other sites of game development interest:
Ralph Koster (http://www.legendmud.org/raph/gaming/index.html)
Mu\'s Unbelievably Long and Disjointed Ramblings About RPG Design (http://mu.ranter.net/theory/index.html)
Avatar, Character, Persona (http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/acp.htm)
Ragnar\'s Ideas on Game Design (http://www.sss.org/~ragnar/MMORPGDesign.html)
More later (maybe).
[Edit]: Okay, I couldn\'t help but throw this (http://www.gamemethod.com/files/funny/0009.gif) in... ;)
Breakfast cereal (http://www.gamemethod.com/files/funny/l33t_cereal.jpg), anyone?

Wow, great links Darkmoon!
I read through the entire first link (made some very good points on what makes a MMORPG good, although there was a lot of focus on \"a good PvP system\") and it was very informative.
I then skipped to the Mu link, and started reading about food (you know me ;) ). And geez, there\'s some pretty interesting reading there if you guys get a chance.

Oh please. Another player griefer whining because they are no longer allowed to grief other players. That article is absurd. He doesn\'t even get his facts right. Player housing was offered in AC1, which came out not long after UO did.
Non-consentual PvP was removed from most MMORPGs for a good reason, because people don\'t like it, *because* it is a primary source of abuse and grief. While I agree that PvP is an important part of MMORPGs, the ability to opt out of it is critical, and I personally wouldn\'t play one that forced me into a PvP environment. If that\'s the sort of thing that you *like*, there is nothing stopping you from turning on the PvP apect of any given MMORPG game. As far as I know, pretty much all of them have PvP in some respect, and almost none of them force you into it.
In my game, there are no less than three different methods planned for having PvP (duels, religious, and political), NONE of which are mandatory, all of which can be completely skipped and still allow the player to have an enjoyable time in game.
And really, that\'s what it\'s all about, isn\'t it :)

I think one of our goals in PlaneShift is to have combat ( specifcally melee ) just another part of the game. We want to make the quests, crafting, guild politics, spell casting just as important and as exciting.
I would be happy if a player can play his entire character without ever wielding a sword and still be respected/feared for the power/guild connections they command.

Good links,
I agree with you Ron. That first article was absurd. Well more like absurdly funny. It is no mystery why nobody listened to the game developer that describes him self as someone who hates people and has a Jawa for an avtar.
Going to go back and read some more of those links...
