Title: Lag reduction help?

hey guys, lets cut to the chase it lags lags alot for me as there any way i can cut down the lag. i havnt been able to move one foot in the game its rediculous

my specs are
2.45 p4(northwood)
500mhz fsb
256mb pc800
g-force 4
60gb hd
Cable modem


is see no reason why i should be lagging but if any one has any ideas why i am, im open to any comments

maybe you don\'t have enough virtual ram, try increasing that and closing some programs before starting to play.

On windows XP :

.- open taskmanager.
.- go to \"processes\".
.- search for \"PSClient.exe\" process.
.- Set priority to normal and NOT to high.

This hint come from protected and not from me, thanks to her /him :).

Thanks for the hint but setting the priority to \"normal\" does not improve performance. I have a monster of a system, updated drivers and a 256 MB graphics card that owns, and a phat DSL connection. From here, New York City, to the Fragnetics server hosting the game, I get the same frustrating problem as the first poster in this thread.

Any other suggestions? I can accept just about any other unrefined feature of PS in development but if I can\'t move about the map with more freedom than this...

There is not much you can do against this annoyance. This is mainly due to the current state of the code. The best option is to wait for the next release and hope this problem will be fixed then  ;)

It usually happens when the server is stressed, or when characters are stuck in the map. Try to come when it is less crowded, for example.

Increasing the virtual memory has nothing to do with that :The priority of the processes can\'t help either, unless you are running another demanding process at the same time. The default priority is normal anyway. Never use higher priorities for user programs, but instead lower the priorities of the programs you want to run in the background, if they are taking too much cpu resource.

My personal lag problem is now solved.

Solution: I disabled the compatibility mode of the psclient.exe. See the image below.

When I first disabled the compatibility mode I had done something else (I can\'t remember what) which caused bad performance. I concluded that disabling the compatibilty mode was of no use to me. But I retraced my steps and again tried various suggestions found here in this forum. Finally, joyfully, this worked for me. I run WinXp Pro on an Intel Alienware system that kicks a55.

From chatting with many thoughtful players and reading all posts here on the subject I learned that there are several solutions possible to the lag monster (it\'s not really lag, many of us  just all call it that). So, if you are reading this post and are ready to explode with anger try to stay cool because we\'ve been there, done that, bought the tee shirt and it didn\'t fit! :P

Just keep trying. Ask others what they have done. Eventually, you will resolve this problem. In my case it was not lag at all, it was the damn compatibility mode. If you truely have a lag problem maybe you need to talk to tech support at your ISP because the server that Planshift is running on is pretty good most of the time as far as I can tell.

There are surely a lot of problems that may slow down a system running Planeshift. It may also depends on the time you\'re online.

The compatibility setting is evil, I\'ve never understood why people were using it, it is really not necessary. Unless your configuration is very special I guess. It\'s really slowing down the process because of the way it is implemented, by addind layers of patching routines to the OS for old applications, sounds like a terrible hack to me ;)

I\'ve done all of the above, and the game still doesn\'t allow me to move at all. Actually, I was doing fine until someone told me to update so that the /spawn command wouldn\'t freeze the game.

Now it takes the game ages just to load up, and I can\'t move at all. My CPU usage spikes and... yeah. You know the rest.

Specs:

2002 Compaq Presario
Microsoft Windows XP
512.50MB Tot. Phys. Memory
1.69GB Tot. Vir. Memory

HVDN Broadband Connection (Avg. T2+ Speed)

^^ Could\'ve sworn I had more space than that... O___o
I\'ll have to go ask my dad about this one. He\'s the real techie.

Did you uninstall/reinstall the game? If so, did you have the same exact slow down problem?

I don\'t know if doing a reinstall will help, just wanted to know whether you tried it.
