I\'d like to see a \"similar\" thread feature. This would at least cut down the number of people who ask for something that has already been asked for a number of times. I\'m not entirely certain how to do this but a number of things spring to mind:
1. automated lookup for like titles. e.g. parse and strip common words from the titles and then look for near matches, so that \"cool clouds\", \"weather\" and \"flooding\" all get parsed back to the root word \"weather\" (using a thesaurus or keywork matching system).
2. force a \"pick a category\" option when creating a new thread - not just \"wish list\" but define a list of the various features. This would help people identify where to post and where to look for existing ideas. A \"request category\" thread might need to exist, kind of like this forum request thread. I could then also choose to filter IN or OUT one or more categories when I search.
3. add a filter on the search for \"NOT\" or \"EXCLUDE\" so people can filter out stuff.. e.g DON\'T include thrreads from the last 3 months, so you can search OLD posts to see if an idea had happened some time ago..
4. in the search the \"show as thread\" has alink to the original thread, but doesn\'t tell you what that thread is. It would also be nice to be able to \"group by\" that thread if there are multiple results in the same thread.

Yeah, it would be nice. But I don\'t know if the forum supports such modifications.

You can download all the source code for the forums from http://www.woltlab.de/ and play around with it. I run a local version of the forum software where I can test all my hacks before sticking them on the main server.
