I`m going to ask about a subject that probably has come up for a thousand times:
I know PS is going to be free (No charges whatsoever) but with almost every Online game if it becomes populair they will ask money to play...
Maybe it wont happen to PS, but if it does I`m willin to pay.
Just wanted to let you know...
-
trust me, this will stay free, as long as the servers stay free, which at the worst(this is all a guess by the way) they would have to temporarily shut the servers down to find new free ones. and this is for the devs, whats teh capacity of the servers?
-
dont see how they could... it is open source right... i dont see how they are going to make an open source game pay unless they take away the open source thingy... and that would defeat the purpose of this project...
they also told all the developement team that it would be free so if they were to go paid iam sure there would be some angry people
-
Yeah, the reason that I joined PlaneShift because it was free and I can\'t pay for other MMORPGs so it would be a great waste of time and lots of other stuff if PlaneShift went P2P which would make me very unhappy. ^_^
-
Ive got a question about that. Most servers cost money. If these are free my guess is they wouldnt be that great, and would have lots of bugs and connection problems and wouldnt be stabley up all the time. Is that the case?
-
Thats what I am afraid of 2, and when they get a better server > it costs money.... :(
-
well supposidly if i remember correctly they were planning on setting up their own computers as servers wern\'t they?? i thought i remember someone saying that before this new board was opened up.
although if that were true i dont see how they could possibly support anyhting voer like 100+ people at 1 time
-
you guys are really scaring me now. I hope they find away to keep the game stabile and fun. If I find the game sucks i\'ll be sad. here are some of my ideas on how they could make the game lagg free: Maybe they\'ll work an advertisement system up to pay for good servers? Maybe they have extremely powerful computers to act as servers that can support lots of players? Maybe they\'ve been able to optimize there game code so that they don\'t cause alot of stress on the server side and let the users computer do most of the hard work or I could be wrong and there whole game might suck but I hope not cause I wanna be one of the first bastards to play.
-
I reckon if they need to, they should have like a bar at the top that has a constant stream of ads to pay for servers and stuff or something like that.
-
Having to click on advertisements before you\'re allowed to log in would probably keep the server free, even thought it could get a bit annoying, it would be worth it to keep it free.
There could also be a option to send a sum of money to the Planeshift team, and in return you get special privileges like maybe access to a special guild and a item or something :) (i was thinking after a year or 6 months or so you would have to pay another sum of money to keep the privileges...)
-
Naw lets not give \'em any ideas like that. We wanna
keep the game totaly free. That would support a sort of
segregation between players. Like only people who
pay get to save there character \'n shit. I feel that\'s
stupid because the whole feel of an mmorpg is the fact
of all the people playing and when you set up a system
where people who pay get special privilages over the
freebie then your not being fair. I mean what would
any mmorpg be like if all the people who couldn\'t pay
decided that they didn\'t wanna play? It wouldn\'t be any
fun for the people who are paying I\'ll tell yah that. also
slowly but surely people would look for other games to
play. I mean half the people here left \"the other game\"
because they stoped caring about all the gamers and
only introduced new stuff to the paying player. I mean if
i wanna pay to play a game i\'ll go out and buy a game
that i\'ll own forever and not just for a month or so. I feel
that some of these mmorpg sites are missing out
because they don\'t wanna take mmorpg\'s to the next
level. Don\'t get me wrong i think that some of the
mmorpg\'s out deserve to get paid but others just piss
me off. Like Avalon why the hell should anyone pay for
a bunch of text messages written on a server side
applet?
there getting out of hand. Has anyone checked out
alien adoption agency? Now that game is good and fun
but i don\'t think that the non paying restrictions should
be so high. thats one of the main reasons i don\'t care
for that game. It\'s time some one (hint, hint) built a
peer to peer
mmorpg. All this server crap is getting on my nerves. If
you let the people setup the network then you don\'t
have to worry about paying (take a look a morpheus).
Cause it\'s not on a centralized network and everyone
contributes bandwith we don\'t need a server to house
the files. I believe until they work a game
that doesn\'t
only rely on servers we will never truely have a totaly
free mmorg.
note:
PlainShift Dev\'s Lead the mmorp gaming industry and create a decentralized gaming network! That may rely on severs but us\'s peer to peer technology. I\'m not an expert or anything but i have done my fare share of reading up on the latest technology. and this is my two cents worth and the only idea i could really come up with to help. all i can give for a good example is morpheus. Give the Power to the people! :)
-
Yeah, I agree with the no-paying thing, eventually they would bring in some thing that only lets unpaying people stay on for an hour a day or something, and that would suck.
And - P2P MMORPG? wtf? explain please, like how would it work and stuff? it\'s an interesting idea.
-
WOW dude.. thats an awful long post dude..
I will read it tomorrow :)
really tired now..
-
I think ps should go with some other ways of making money from the start... some examples that would cost real money are
Custom Engravings on armor and weapons
Custon Flyers
Custom tatoos
Well, anyway things that make to game more fun for you, but don\'t change gameplay, or give you an unfair advantage...
-
I don\'t understand how a peer to peer system would work with a MMORPG. As I understand, with a peer to peer system you only connect with ONE machine. So, if you have a Peer to Peer MMORPG, you connect to another player\'s machine and there are only to characters in the world) (excepting NPCs and monsters)
I don\'t know a lot about how exactly the peer to peer system works, but if it works as i think it does, then i will be of no use in a game like this.
-
please just check out the decentralized network post.
I think that explains in enough detail how it\'d work.
look for the posts by me. duh. you\'ll find it
-
Well the fact is that no one on the PS dev team really understands how it will all work out either. We want it to be free and no one wants to be paid for working on it. We are just doing it because we think it is fun to work on it.
However, servers and bandwidth DO cost money. Bandwidth in particular worries me. Let\'s do an example:
Person uses their cable modem to play and uses 56Kbps on their connection, playing 3 hrs a day, 6 days a week for a year.
56 * 3600secs * 3hrs * 6days * 52wks = 188697600Kbits, or 23.5 GB of transfer per person per year.
Webmasters.com is a pretty cheap hosting place, and they charge $6/GB of bandwidth, so that one player is going to cost $141/yr just to connect. If we have lots of users, we can probably get volume discounts, but it is still going to be way more money than we are going to get off of donations.
I think on the team though, we just feel like it will all work out and we just need to not agonize about it and build the freakin game. :-)

The main MMORPG i play has put in a thing called \"Charter Memberships\" where you send in some money and get a special coupon that you can use on any weapon to make it twice as strong. Also you get a house (you can choose a custom floor plan and everything) and you\'re able to get a name change.
IF Planeshift remains free you\'re going to have alot of server trouble, this would make players really annoyed and you\'ll start getting flames about servers on the boards, people will leave, and it could make Planeshift look bad... :P
Putting say, 3 advertisements at the login screen, and when you click all 3 then you are allowed to play your characters...this would mean everytime someone would log in Planeshift would get money. With the charter memberships the PS team could raise enough money to get a better server and with the advertisements they would get a enough cash to keep that server running...
I also like Dumb Woob\'s idea about custom names for weapons and armor and things, which could be offered to Charter members. :)

Thought I\'d resurect this old post about the pricing of PS. Some good points and ideas were discussed and it is directly relevant to this thread.
PS funding (http://www.planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=11&boardid=1&styleid=2&sid=c40b7702ec132f4a8f84c53968f713de)

Direct connect uses a peer to peer system which involves hubs, if we could make the planeshift system so that we have one strong computer in the middle and the others helping it, could work if anyone knew how to program it. On the other hand would this make alot of worlds and you wouldn\'t know which you connect to, hubs with a lot of lowend computers and 56k modems would get lots of lag and it would make people with better computers want to log in on the same hub so they won\'t risk any lag.
And I think that the middle computer needs to be a server.
