How about u can buy tobbaco or even sigarets at the tavern or some designated shop, just for fun.
U can add a job and a plant to this,
ex. : sigar rollers could collect tobacco plants and dry them and u can use ur rolling skill to make sigars or sigarets, or even use ur pipe-crafting skill, to make pipes, and sell these, price according to the size and quality off the product.
The pipe u smoke with or the size of sigars could be a status symbol in the game, since a fine crafted pipe takes a lot of work and craftmanschip and therfore costs a lot ...

I don\'t think, and certainly don\'t hope, that any such promotion of drugs or harmful substances will be created in the PlaneShift world. Doing things like that in video games only helps to encourage kids to copy the things they see in real life, brainwashing children into thinking taking/smoking drugs is a \"cool\" thing to do.
Enough people in this world are dying of cancer, heart/lung/liver disease and related illnesses, without the careless advertising of these horrible things in U-rated games making more young people go out and slowly kill themselves.

They have lots of money. You could make smoking harmful to your character and thus teach kids the dangers of smoking. I doubt though the tobacco company would sponsor you then.

I\'m up for a little pipe-weed. I mean, if we\'re going to avoid the tobacco thing because it has harmful effects in real life, we may as well ditch the tavern, and the swords, and the bad guys :)

Ya know, if smoking has a slightly negative effect of some sort, certain over-protective persons might not complain...
But since this is such a touchy subject, any implementation of tabacco or pipe-weed ought to wait a good while.

okay you smoke a long time. Sometimes you character can get strokes and your character dies for no reason. You get emphysema in which your character can\'t run for long periods and can only run for 5 seconds bursts every 10 minutes. Ya that would be nice, I\'d like to see that happen to someone. And if you don\'t smoke for a long time your character doesn\'t move at all until it gets a cigarette. Ya very smart...

I have to agree with you, Mogura.
Certainly, smoking,drugs,and tobacco could encourage others to take them in real life as well. That will lead their future a bad one. Over 45 percent of the world dies because of drugs,cigarettes,and alcohol. We wouldn\'t want to INCREASE that number now,would we?

From CB on, they\'ll sell only milk. With regards to alcohol abuse.
From CB on, meat will be replaced by tofu cake. With regards to the veggies.

btw, don\'t some of you guys see problems where there are really none? If a kid saw a character on PS smoke and now wants to copy it in real life in order to restore his/her hit points, I\'d say the smoke is his/her smallest problem :D

Well, I know that taste is different, but I\'m having trouble to see how bad breath, pale face and cough can give you a bonus to charisma, but that\'s just me.

Hmmm well my experience of smokers is that ppl want to be cool (most of \'m)
For example a guy wants to hang with a group and all those ppl smoke. Well he/she is going to smoke too just to be like a real member of that group.
But i do agree smoking gives you a bad breath and im not gonna smoke even if tobacco was the last living thing on the whole planet

If tobacco is implanted, it shouldn\'t give you any stat-bonuses, but be there for RP-purposes only.

About having smoking in-game encouraging real smoking:
That just doesn\'t happen. It doesn\'t work that way. Smoking in movies, however, does have that effect by making it seem normal. Having it in a medieval setting changes everything, though. Smoking in planeshift would not encourage real life smoking.

god knows that they think every thing that is fun is unholy and if they see a cig in the game they\'ll go beserk and pettion to ban the game in (insert country name here) for EVER !

Lol why dun we just all start planting vegetables and encourage parents that it\'s a good thing their children play this.
Then wen patches arrive just make it worse and worse and just say: \"yes mommy this looks like weed but this is just a bug of the game, Actually this Cannabis plant is a mutated couliflower\" and parents will be happy again :P

I don\'t care what any of you think, I would find it very disrurbing to have smoking in the game and i have a game called gothic which is quite good game ecept seeing some one sitting there smoking a bong is a bit gross huh?

Hehe I think it would be cool if you could roll up a fat spliff and get bent. Could have some sort of doobie vision implemented so the top of the screen drops down to represent your eyelids drooping.
Im sure people will think im a moron after this post but I personally do think it would make the game interesting.

1. Kids won\'t just go and start smoking just because they saw it in a game, because it\'s bs. If they\'ll start smoking, it\'s not because of the game, they\'ll do it anyways. They might blame the game, or their parents will, but come on, don\'t tell me you actually think games make kids smoke...

About smoking raising charisma... Yeah, sure, I mean, think about it: A guy giving a speech while puffing every other word, caughing every other one and lights another cig every sentance is very charismatic and sexy! :rolleyes:
3. Smoking got it\'s pros though: If you\'re a heavy smoker, you\'ll have a ranged attack of caughing parts of your lungs on your foes. When hit, the foe will be confused. He won\'t be able to attack for some time, and will be easier to hit.

Just occured to me that the if kids are playing computer games and suddenly think \"Oh this justifies me smoking\". Their next dilemma is finding a dealer or supplier. While there is a prolific drug problem in society today, this is not to say that tapping the culture is easy. I personally think they are much more likely to be influenced by a friend or person they admire that actually has contacts that can provide contraband.
Then again the society which I live in is most likely far different to that of other people on this forum.

No! I don\'t want stat decreases, but what about addictions? If you\'re a heavy smoker, you\'ll need to smoke some tobacco from your pipe every X minutes. If not, your vision becomes shaky, and you will start to have a bit of trouble walking from shaking. There also may be some sort of smokable plant unique to PlaneShift. The more expensive, the less addictive and more bonuses rather than negative effects.

i think smoking tabbacco would be a nice touch in the game but i don\'t think it should give you any boost or negetive affect\'s ....i would love to get my char a pipe (not a bong :D ) many time\'s in game i roleplay that i have a tabbacco pipe and when i did my screenie for the guild i gave rumblebelly a pipe and it just seemed ta fit right 8)...
as for getting addicted in game that\'s just dumb i smoke ciggerett\'s in real life and i don\'t get all shaky or blurry eyed when i don\'t have a ciggerette the worst thing that happen\'s when i am out of smoke\'s is i eat a little more :P

It will just make the devs work to produce script etc. for some stupid cigarettes which nobody would buy because they would think its a stupid idea (like me for instance)

I think pipes would add to the Role Playing experience. I dont think that tobacco should give you any negative or positive effects.

Right, some people think smoking is stupid, unecessary, and will make the devs work on scripts and stuff. But some other people think that smoking will add another RP pan to the game.

The game already has alcoholic drinks in it, and this is really just an extention, and having a fag is no worse then slicing someones head off with a sword. Well, since tabacco is native to America, and since Medievil refers to Europe between something like 500-1400 AD, and America was discovered 1492 AD (and tobacco probably later then that), I have to conclude that they didn\'t have it in the middle ages. And the word cigarette refers to tobacco wrapped in paper, so if they rolled it in something different then it wasn\'t a cigarette.

I am all for the smoking, I\'d prefer to see pipes, but paper and leaves are good too.
I don\'t like the vison idea, the health getting lower idea I don\'t really care for.
The only problem is, like some said, their parents won\'t let them play if they see that. I don\'t understand why, because you have people being killed, but I do know some parents are like that.

I think pipes and the like should be implanted but just to give your charcter a more realistic life and therefore giving way to more RPing opertunities. The only downside to smoking would be that you would become addicted and you would have to buy them. Failure to keep up with your charcters addiction would resault in maybe a stats drop or something.

Well the game Morrowind has for example alcohol as a \"potion\" you can drink. But they aren\'t called \"Beer\" or something like that, they\'re called for example Sujamma. Thats the best way to include \"bad things\" (like alcohol, drugs and tobacco) into RPG\'s, just to make up names for them. Most \"children\" won\'t even know what it is if they\'re called something else. Then make the \"bad stuff\" decrease agility or intelligence on the character.

They\'re not trying to hide it in SWG...
They have openly implemented drugs and alcohol - you both get downers and vommit when using certain drugs.
All things considered I would say that Starwars G would be characterized as pretty mainstream.

i didn\'t bother reading through most of the messages, i got the idea from the first ten. all i have to say is that, i\'m a person who smokes, and i made that decision. i know people who don\'t smoke, and they have made that decision too. i know people who were heavy smokers, but succesfully quit, and it was their decision. every person has the freedom to choose and is responsible for his own fate. give \'em tobacco and let them choose

I personally believe that pipes, water pipes, etc should be in the game, but not now.
This is something better discussed when the game has been implemented, balanced out,and when they are ready to work on the smaller details.
Right now this discussion is getting overly heated and doing nothing but going in circles, so how about we wait awhile and when it comes up again later, do a poll. This way we can get a good idea about how many people are for it, against it, and that don?t really care.

Not to mention that my cousin died from lung cancer from smoaking about a year ago. Its just not right to put drugs, tobacco, ect in this game.

Regardless of any opinions of whether smoking and drinking in games is bad, I wouldn\'t play a game where people walked around choking, dying from deseases, and vomiting on the floor.
Death can be \"clean\" if you don\'t see blood and you don\'t see gory details such as decapitation. Drinking alchohol can be tolerated if it doesn\'t get you drunk (because it doesn\'t, unless you drink too much). Doing drugs can never be \"clean\" or tolerated; it has no good effects, even in small doses, and is quite frankly disgusting no matter what it is you\'re smoking.

Wasap all first of all i want to say i don\'t belive smoking/drinking/drugs in the rw is a good idea. now onto the game
isn\'t the whole point of fantisey/rp to do things you can\'t or won\'t do in rw? i personaly would love to have smokeing and drinking in the game. realy imagin for a moment youre visiting a notoriouse tavern to say contact a smugler or hire an assassin or ask a wandering ranger about a dragons lair. ok you walk in and are sorounded by a loud din of manay voices. as you walk to the bar you hear a dwarf at a corner table shout to the barmaid \"another round of colas over here\"
you finaly get to the bar and ask for ____ you are directed to a small table agenest the back wall. you can clearly see the hooded figure nurseing a ginger-ale
ok now same situation a bit difrent setting
as you walk into the the tavern it takes your eyes a moment to ajust to the darknes tho the tavern is brightly from candles the light has little power to pirce the dense smoke which seems to hang about the room.
at a corner table a party of dwarvs are spending some exess gold they made from a recant trade trip. the party it seams has traveld from the distant mountan kingdom from the long pipe with an intricley carved broad bowl made from the rare metals native to that land. the leader calls to the barmaid to bring them another round of ale. you make your way to the bar and after inquireing to whom you seek you are directed to a small table near the back wall whare a hoded figure is seated.
as you squint through the smoke you can barely make out their features under the hood.
sorry i wrote so much once i start its hard to stop.
but anyway like i said im in faver of smokeing/drinking in the game
also in morrowind (a game i love) they have moon sugar
and many drinks are said to be beer,wisky ect.
anyway id like to thank those who read all this cya

Morrowind\'s idea of having it\'s own unique addictive substances is a good one. Seeing as PlaneShift is also a unique world, it would probably be best to take a leaf out Morrowind\'s book and name tobacco something else. It\'s the association to real-life substances that worries me the most, really.

I was 13 when I started playing pen and paper RPG\'s. It was a bit of a club that had started in town. Most of the other players were in their mid twenties or older. So, naturally, there was beer, ale, drugs, and whatever else in the games. Whatever anyones character, including mine, took/ used, I still knew the difference between it being a rp quirk and a rl problem.
I agree that rl substances should be renamed, but I don\'t understand what the big deal is. If someone is old enough to play the game (i.e, reading and such) then chances are they\'ve had the education that says drugs are bad, evil, will kill you, all of the above....
It\'s ultimately anyones choice after that. I mean, I smoke, but because I enjoy it. Only like, one or two every few days. But, if someone walks past me in the street with a smoke in my hand, you know they judge you like you are diseased or something. Fair go. Not everyone can be cured.
/rant off. Sorry, i get upset about this topic sometimes. Hope I\'ve contributed something useful.... :\\
P.S: For the record, I don\'t condone the \"hard drugs\" in anyway in rl, and there is no excuse for those.

the over 18 sever could be a roughter place.
I\'m not saying these are good things but to have the freedom of choice is real.
the under 18 sever could have bad word filters and such, and be a clean nice world.
Oh and btw i do thing in games i never do in real life,
like run around and shot ppl. so if i did druges in a game thats not going to make me do them in real life!
I played Vice City i dont steal cars and cocain or shot down cops. There were druges in Max Pain also.

There won\'t be more than one server. The devs want to keep it one server = one community.
I think the only reason why smoking/drugs/etc would be bad is because everyone would be doing it just because they can. Realistically, only a small percentage of players in CB will be roleplayers and stick to their character. The rest of them will be plevelers and cooldoods wanting to show off their Super Doom Axe of Leetness +56, while running around spewing drunken insults and smoking a fag while high on narcotics- because it will impress their chavvy friends. :P

Heh, first of all beer is fine, even good for you, unless you are an idiot and drink too much(which isn\'t that much) too often, or have a weakness to it.
And why not have drugs in the game (I hate drugs and my friends know it :P ) but, think about it, we have drugs and then seriously go against them by penalizing anybody who does them with a lose of strength, permanently :P and if you do drugs the limit of strength goes down and so on and so forth until people realize it is stupid to do it in the game then we point out that it isn\'t much different IRL and so we stop everybody from doing drugs :D
...I hate drugs, you do them over much and I will convince you to stop :)

If there are going to be harsh penalties to taking drugs and smoking which make people not do it, then it is not worth the time to implement in the first place.

An aspect no one here has thought of is the different races. For starters theres no way a kran that cant breath and deosnt have blood could not smoke or take drugs...
If your a diablo you could take 2x as much as an ekinda (because of size) it would need to be gender spesific, because in rl women cant take drink/drugs as well as men. it would need alot of new animations this seems like alto of hard work to programe... and for what??

Atleast fighting adds depth to the game and is a nececity when your being attacked by a wild beast so you dont get mauled. none was ever made to smoke or take drugs (except medacinal) because they would die if they never.
If they do implament it (god forbid) i hope there are the negative effects mentiond somewere in this thread like smokers are slow all the time. They also lose charisma they cant be archers because they would get the shakes if they are dieing for a fag, drugies can just drop dead because they took to much etc.
And just remember in an age where you fight with swords there is no life support, no ambulance, hell there was no recovery position.
P.s. kanon people look at you like your diseased because smoking causes disease e.g. cancer ergo they are right to...

I didn?t think the thread worth reading through all the way but here is my opinion on the matter:
Lets see we already have a tavern & mugs so beer is in I guess?
As for drugs, I am strongly against it, however I think we should have something similar to ?smoke-leaf? such as seen in lotr. Smoking pipes with certain plants can have medicinal or detrimental effects depending on what sort of poison the plant has, it can be an extension of a herbalist?s job to gather smokeable plants & prepare them to put in pipes?.

Or even just have it an item (a tobacco pipe) and you can use it, and you just sit down and blow smoke rings, just as a little something to have fun with to do when you\'re bored.

Smoking should calm your character and give him a bad cough so he has to stop every 5 seconds and hack.

I don\'t see any real reason for tobacko smoking, it wouldn\'t really add that much to the game, and there are lots of other features that would be more worthwhile.
Pluse it is quite politicaly incorrect, which probbly will ensure it\'s exclusion.

I don\'t think, and certainly don\'t hope, that any such promotion of drugs or harmful substances will be created in the PlaneShift world. Doing things like that in video games only helps to encourage kids to copy the things they see in real life, brainwashing children into thinking taking/smoking drugs is a \"cool\" thing to do.

Personally,I like the idea of pipes,not because I smoke,but because if you look at the classic fantasy works,they all have smoking and drinking(name one classic that doesn\'t have at least one smoke-filled tavern scene or wizened Mage having a pipe whilst contemplating a problem). Also, if you look at history,we humans have been breathing intoxicating smoke for a long time..the Egyptian Preists burned a mildly halucinogenic incense in the Temples..it made the commoners easy to manipulate,easy to invoke \'visions\'.
As far as ingame intoxicants go,well you already have Ale and if you do not include some negative effects (even if only temporary,like lower agility/lack of coordination) then you may be sending a mixed message to the younger folks....AND, if there is no effect ...whats the point of even having it?
Now lets look at stimulants,as might be used ingame.We can use something like coffee,giving a temp increase to alertness and/or reflexes if used in moderate doses but a decrease in concentration/coordination at high doses(try it yourself..slam a half-dozen Espressos and see if you can concentrate :) )
The way I see it NOW is the time to discuss this issue in a rational manner,NOT after release, so as to give the Devs a fair amount of time to consider their options.
Now... I\'m probably older than most of you,heck probably old enough to be some of you\'alls grandpa.I\'ve been computing since before all these cool 3d graphics (VIC-20 anyone?) and this is not a new issue.People my age may recall the huge stink that Duke Nuke\'m created with the strippers and the use of the term \"Aw,shit\" when he stepped in a pile. I\'m personally in favor of addictive substances. Be they alcohol, smokes, drugs whatever. From my understanding PS has always been about a RPing community and you can\'t get that when limiting what a player could or could not do. They do need to have side effects though, probably drastic ones.
I realise that this may cause a problem with younger children and / or their parents, but the fact is that all of these things exist in real life too. You could even implement a system of laws, like these things are not allowed in public and so forth.... kind of like they exist right now.
To sum up I\'ll go back to my first statement, that limiting players is not the way to promote RPing. To make parents more accepting of this type of play you could even promote this as a learning environment that shows how addicting substances can hurt you.

Well... on my own if i want to roleply my character who smoke i write \"/me takes his pipe and starts to smoke\" so no really need for tobacco implements. For istance, my chars smokes pipe, i do it on the tavern or in every situation i want...
I know smoking it\'s bad, as to drink or take other drugs-like stuffs but it add some deepness in the game (why he/she start to smoke? Why he/she start to drink? an so on...)
But devs could implements stuffs that aren\'t tobacco, alcohol or so: this is a unique world so we might have unique items. Devs should implements some \"innocent\" items that serve as well as tobacco or so, like the scent of a certain flower which give character more mana but less strenght (to balance the improvment) or using any alchemic stuff to increase his handsome or whatever their creative brain want. To balance all devs should implement also using a certain item for long time can have some problems, for exemple to use that flower i told before for long time a scent remain on the char and it will be detectable by monster who have a good nose sniffing him in greater distances.
This should a little answer to keep peace between people who want drug-like and people who don\'t want drugs...

I am not trying to flame, it just came to me, strength potions all those regular RPG stuff... it\'s all drugs.. alchemists are basically drug dealers... cooks... The only thing is those potions aren\'t chemically addictive as drugs in rl, they are psychollogically addictive every fight oriented player spends tons of money on healing potions...so they can fight big monsters easier. I say a real fighter uses no potions
Just say no to potions.

Good idea I\'ve known some people who dabbled in potions in rl and they are useualy addictive or have slight negative side effects besides the desire effect even the ones made from common ordinary nonharmful herbs.
O and one more thing.
Did you know that you have to already be at a high risk of getting cancer to get cancer from tobaco and that if you are already at a high risk for cancer the odds are you will get it anyways.
(No offense intended to anybody who has friends or family that have died or suffered from cancer and just for the recored my Grandmother who died from cancer (mutagen related) promted me to do the research that lead me to this fact)

While I would somewhat enjoy having pipes in the game (Entirely because one of my characters likes to chew on pipes.. just the whole sage thing...), I can equally understand not having it there. Heck, my grandpa died partially from smoking (I wanted to shove that pipe down his throat sooo many times...), so I know well the harm it can have.
Definately don\'t think it should be BENEFICIAL though. Aside from it meaning EVERYONE will smoke in the game, because it would be an extra item slot... that\'s just.. backwards.

Did I said I once met Gandalf the Grey? It is a great man... He learnt me the art of smoking with a pipe (it isnt as easy as you think!).
to put the tobacco in the pipe, to light it, to make rings of smoke, ...
But since I am in Yliakum i didn\'t fund a lot of tobacco...
So Im forced to smoke mushrooms now!
Im against cigarett in Yliakum but pipes are another things... it seems to be a little more middle age...
And i think we could smoke herbals (im not speaking about drugs but herbals)... cause why should Yliakum be exactly like the reality! Is tobacco the only thing we could smoke? We could create our own herbals with specific effects (destressing, more hp, more mana, more stamina, ... during a little time).
Then if you have any idea about herbals we could smoke SPECIFIC to Yliakum please post it. You have to imagine it.
@incenjucar : if you knew the number of times someone gave me a cigarett... i never smoke irl... in the game it will certainly be the same if you have the choice (smoking herbals or making potions) : people wont smoke everytime...
PS: if you are not serious please dont post. I mean i dont want any advertising for drugs irl following my post...

i think there should be tobacco, but smoking it in public areas should be punisable.
there shouldnt be ciggarettes, they would be purely items of rp. just some pipes. it wouldnt have any benefits or any losses, so only people interested in rp would buy it.
it would cost ~200 tria, so you would have to be dedicated to rping if you wanted it

in the middle age that was off course allowed. Read Tolkien and you will understand. Even in the beginnig of the 20th century it was funny to smoke... Im not ok irl for that but just imagine in every part of the world people smoke : indians from America, europa, North America (once the genocid was done), Africa, India, and certainly Australia (I dunno the Australia history Im sorry).
But its like coffee... people didnt smoke tobacco or drink coffee everytimes. It was rare (only sometimes) and so there was no cancer...

1. It\'s in human (and some animals) nature to get some kind of buzz, be it drunk, stoned, poisoned or watever. Theirfor I think it is a must to have alcohol and other drugs in game. Their are animals who eat rotten fruit to get drunk and primates on tropical beaches that go steal alcoholic cocktails from customers on the beach untill they drop on the floor, drunk. We have had shaman smoke weed, eat mushrooms and that sort of stuff from way back into pre-historic times. A lot of the cave paintings are proven to have been painted in an altered state of mind (also halucinating from being so long in the dark). The BAD imago around weed is to be blamed to America, that untill the point of the second world war even promoted the growth of this crop. America has never spend more money on proving a drug is harmfull, but they have discovered nothing on weed that makes it more harmfull than alcohol, even contrary, alcohol is more harmfull. Even stuff like cocaine was generaly used in the start of the 20th century as a painkiller. So labeling weed as bad is just a social thing, look at the netherlands, they allow the use of weed and they have the lowest addiction rate in Europe (offcourse it\'s full of tourist, who see it as a drug paradise).
2. We should have original names for these things to avoid problems with parents and such, and just to keep things original.
3. Avoid to advanced techniques: bongs, cigarettes, vaporizers, pills. We need to keep things in a primitive state.
4. Doing drugs should have a negative effect on your physical (and/or mental) state, but might be necesary for some kind of shaman ritual to get into contact with the spiritual plane for instance.
5. alcohol=drugs, their is no denying it. getting drunk is poisoning your body, that\'s why they call overuse of alcohol, alcohol-poisoning.
6. medicine use and drug use are very much related, you really can\'t have the one without the other. The zulu\'s had their shaman give their warriors, a mix of herbs (weed amongs it) before going into battle. It broke the inhibitions of their warriors and they became fierce killing machines.
A virtual world without drugs wouldn\'t be right, it would be incomplete. I am against an Ostrich politic, the facts are as they are, we humans have a need to get some kind of buzz. Don\'t let this game be ruled by the American social climate.

you do know this topic is about tobacco? when comparing tobacco to fantasy I (as most in here seems to do) thinks of a pipe, I think alcohol (beer, wine etc.) and pipes are okay in PS, but I am not so sure about Drugs

everything in the game is accelerated... you wouldn\'t want to play an infant for 3 years now would you? can you imagine a 5 year old trying to wield a sword? based on the typical training rates for mmorpg\'s, your smoking habit would have your character dying from smoking complications in ... roughly a month and a half.

This is a game!. We already have alcohol in game. And what kids think if you wont get drunk from beer and you gain some extra hitpoints.
Someone wrote topic about psychedelic mushrooms, he/she thought it would be fun if there were some in the game. And everyone was like: \"Yea! that would be cool, lets add some visual hallusinations and heavy trips to shrooms and its perfect\"
And now people dont want tobacco to the game because kids will start to smoke. This should be realistic game, not sensored teaching game to +3 years old.
I understand is someone wouldnt want to see pot in the game (I\'d like to have it too), but i really cant understand why there shouldnt be tobacco. It would raise the atmosphere much...

An endurance penalty which goes away over time.
Re:Addicts... my character might go through more than 10,000 trias of health potions when I play. The people I play with in game have the joke that I\'m a health potion junky, and I play it up sometimes.
A lot of this stuff just has logical consequences through RP. I\'m not saying that the game should be reduced as a platform, but certain things are just naturalistic in nature and it isn\'t worth the hassle to include them in the game mechanics.

Realistic Game?
Mc Hammer has some points. Alcohol causes as much trouble as tobacco does. I\'d say more, since it\'s a drug with disinhibitory properties.
Besides, when you have an internet connection you\'re already open to all kinds of information.
I don\'t think we should worry much with this though. There\'s plenty of other stuff that should be implemented before tobacco :P
