Title: Collaborating things goes faster
Post by: Euler on January 05, 2004, 10:53:17 pm
Hi everybody!

Probably this idea is not new, but is a good one and I\'ll try to be constructive. This goes for the DEVS spetialy.

My idea is very simple: I think that you (developers) can save a lot of work by opening some web pages for stuff related with the game. With this I mean that there could be a lot of people who wants, for example, a npc having their voices; you could create some kind of contest giving some dialogs and receiving a lot of sound files with people voices playing those roles.

That just an example, but you can do this with music, textures, architectures, maps, books, maybe cultural files like poems or popular song, or what your imagination sais. Of course, you must put some rules, and explain people what you want: \"this npc must be an old dwarf\", \"the music for this dungeon must be sweet and have some surprising moments to give fear to players\", \"the architecture of this city must be like the one seen on but try not to just copy it\", etc, etc.

You (devs) must see this just as a big data base where you have a lot of stuff to choose. If you don\'t want something don\'t take it, if you need the map for a city and you don\'t want to do by yourselves take one from there, if you heard some melody perfect for some dungeon just take it, etc, etc. This is just to save time, people do great work making mods for other games, why not just take it from the beginning.

I hope this will be usefull for you devs (specially after reading this all, sorry, I talk too much)

This should probably be in the Wish List forum, but I\'ll answer it anyways.

I think that for a large part they are doing this already, the wish list forum isn\'t here just to post your ideas in and then nothing happens, the devs look at it, and if they think it\'s a good idea they do implement it into the game at some point(look at the \"quests again\" thread).
You can, if you think you\'re good enough, become a member of the dev team at any time you want, this is what an open-source project is all about, everyone who wants to help can.

Wish list works fine, their to busy working on the actual games at the moment to do much more I expect...especially since they don\'t have anyone who just does that

Well, Axsyrus, it?s not the same I\'m talking about, it is excessive to become a member just for donating a song or some dialogs (said, a barman\'s dialogs). When you create a virtual world you must develope a lot of stuff like images and audios. If there is someone who would bring a lot of them he/she would become a member because of that amount of work, that\'s not a little donation. But I\'m sure that there is a lot of people that could help doing little work here and there and don\'t want to become a member.

This thread is not exactly a wish but an advice for developers to take advantage of fans\' potential work.

If you want to make something for the devs, you can do that anytime you want.. and the devs will request stuff from the fans if they need it, for example, check this thread: Symbols (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=5468&boardid=11)

There are a lot of other threads like this, you can submit monsters, cities etc.
so all the stuff you\'ve suggested is already being used.

The devs are always looking for new sources of (free :D) talent to aid Planeshift in its development.  I can understand why some people would not like to commit to becoming a member or \"WTB member\" but if you feel that you have a talent that could be put to use, by all means put it to use.

In the roleplaying thread you will find lots of stories, poems, songs, etc that will probably make it into the game at some point.  There was a thread awhile back stating that people who wanted their PS-related works to be published in the library need only to post in the forums and some would be chosen.

For music and sound effects, just make something up in your free time and show it to the devs.  If they like your work they may ask you to try creating something else for them.

And as for art, you can see there is a thread where people have posted various ideas for PS, as well as maps and custom model skins they have made.

So you see, the possibilites are endless for user contributions to PS.  Just take it and run with it, see where you end up... :)

Part of the problem is maintaining a consistant overall \'look and feel\'.   For example, somebody may be able to make an awesome model of a machine gun but it doesn\'t fit in with the theme.  Same if somebody did up a techno piece of music.

This could also be a problem in developing dialogs.  Unless there is good control over it then it could make the world seem funny with people saying strange things.

Now, there can be *lots* of general things people can contribute.  Stuff such as voice talent, we could use many people doing general greetings like \"Hi\", \"Hello\", etc.  Same can be for 2D art, we can always use new icons, mouse pointers etc.

I think the biggest problem in this scheme is management of it.  We spend a lot of time already managing our own resources and handling a player developed database is a bit too much for us at this point ( it will be the life of PS once we get farther ).

I think that a player donated database is a really good idea.  I think it would be a very good project for somebody to set up and manage for us.  You can do things like vote on the favourite pieces and submit them to be included.  Or have community development on an object, mob, etc.  We can give guidelines and things for this.  You can have a list of the top 10 accepted donations/donators so you can compete against each other to have your work included.

If somebody is willing to start on/maintain a site like this dedicated to player donated content then I am sure we will support it the best we can.  So who will answer the call?
