I just thought that Mana was such a boring word and was too common, so I thought that a different name should be used.
Instead of Mana, there is Spirit Power (think of a better name). It can be recharged by resting, potions, and by clerics. If you have 0 Spirit Power then you turn into a demon and your Spirit flies to the nearest temple. While you are a demon your strength is increased, agility decreased, weakness to blessed weapons (does 5x damage), you then must go to the temple and retrieve your Spirit and you regain some of your SP back. I think this is a good idea as it will prevent people to constantly use cheap magic, use a weapon, wait till magic recharges, use magic again, and so on.
So what do ya think?

This reminds me of a game called \"Lionheart,\" where a demon possesses your character, but can cast spells for your character.
First of all, I like this idea. It\'s unique, and gets rid of the overused system of mana. Not that I detest the overused system, but uniqueness is what Planeshift aims for. I think. In any case, I like uniqueness, if only because its different.
Anyway, I think that the Spirit would have to come back to the body, instead of the body going to the Spirit. It\'s more convenient, that way. Also, maybe only a specific race (Diaboli?) actually does turn into a demon, or only specific characters that go through a specific ritual can. I don\'t think that many people will enjoy watching their character turn from a wise sage to a bloodsucking fiend of nature that happens to be hungry while teaching. While this, in my opinion, may undermine the system of old sage wizards, perhaps something can be used to keep the old sage wizards, but also include Spirit Power. Such as a ritual.
Don\'t ask me to change the name of Spirit Power, I\'ll only come up with worse.

Great idea Elegrand, except for this part:

That is a little harsh to pure magic users, and people who don\'t use magic shouldn\'t be free of this...since then magic users can lose both life and spirit power and others only lose life...something would have to work out to balance them, perhaps what Wormtail said, but then it would only have a different name and would lose it\'s originality to many players, but that shouldn\'t matter much I guess.
Anyways, say yes to originality! :P

a different name is fine but thats way over the edge to change it so a mage (like me) cant be pure caster, that would make the game \"incredibly\" horrible, seeing how pure melee/range ppl wouldnt have to worry about \"turning\" into a demon or anything and they could hit as many times as they want
im glad ur tryin to give unique ideas for a really good game but think it through and make sure its good for every type of player, and it doesnt have to affect those who dont want it too other then NPKing and such

perhaps instead combine mana and stamina and maybe allow overuse of energy at the cost of health? i think that the melee and ranged classes should get some exclusive abilities that make use of this energy similar to spells. for example, a fighter could use an ability called \'whirlwind attack\'(reference to D&D) that drains the fighter of energy while he attacks with the ability. the archer could maybe fuse some magic into his arrows (IE fire arrow, ice arrow, ect.) making use of his energy that way as well.

I\'m all for hippie power.
I prefer a concept like mana, or magical energy to \"Spirit Power\" which doesn\'t seem to be much different. However, there are other things that could possibly be used for magic - sacrificing HP, or even other stats like your strength or stamina, needing special ingredients, or having a staff with a limited amount of energy.
Some spells could \"tie up\" magical energy (or some other part of the essence of the character) until the spell came to a conclusion (dispelled or expired).
I think that in Planeshift, the magical energy comes through the Crystal and will probably be manipulated/stored in crystals, to keep thematic consistancy.

the word spirit power reminds me of Yuyu Hakusho the anime series
but yes range and melee users will be able to use magic too im sure, but its gonna be skills, and im sure they\'ll use mana, i dont care for either one as long as its not something stupid like, the strange blue bar, or the obviously blue bar ;)

when i had made my last post, i was thinking of arcanum. in that one, the bar used for casting spells and the like was also used for stamina as well, but where i deviated from that was in arcanum, if you used up all of your energy your character passes out from exhaustion and sleeps for a certain amount of time depending on how much under zero the character had gone.
you\'re right, roguewolftamer, it kinda reminds me of yu-yu as well...
\"spirit gun!\"
