Title: 56k users?
Post by: Kuiper7986 on January 13, 2004, 02:59:56 am
I know the Developers will try to make this game friendly to all narrowband and broadband users. I\'m going to sound nieve a bit but I\'m not I\'m just asking.

Can the game support the use of a 56k modem?
-Reason: Almost 70% of all internet users in the world still use dialup.

The true speed of a 56k modem is 56,000bps. But dialup users only connect a normal speed of 26,600bps.
-Reason: Even with 26,600bps can you see Planeshift running at normal speed?

I think there\'s still a long way to go before there is a definitive answer, but until then, I think you\'ve answered your own question...

Depends on the quality of the phone line, doesn\'t it?  I know for sure I got connections around 44000 back when I still used dialup.

It depends on the quality of your phone line AND on the modem of your ISP, they must all be equiped with V90 or V92 now.

I usually connected at 52000, and it\'s more than enough to play MB. I can even download at full speed (i.e. around 5.5 KB/s), it makes me lag by no more than about 3 seconds (thanks to UDP I guess).

Well I\'m from Russia and that means I have BAD lines and BAD ISP! But you know what? I usually have smth around 40 Kb/s and that is quite enough for PS! So don\'t worry!

40 kb / 8 = 5 kB

I\'m sorry, but math doesn\'t lie. :P

well we know for a fact that most of the game and data will be client side, so that\'s a good thing.

Question is data is going be transmitted from server to client? ex: 10k/b a player? or something like that.

or you could all stop being so cheap and just get broad band already... lol jk

i know your just joking, but maybe in some areas we can\'t get broadband, like DSL is not in my area and the cable in my area is almost $57.00 a month. I have satellite TV but satellite broadband isn\'t good for gaming because of the delay it takes to send the signal from my house to the satellite then back to down to the target location.

I\'m sure a lot of people here who have dialup wished they had broadband but circumstances don\'t allow them to. That\'s why a lot of games can\'t reach their maximum popularity, its because its limited to only broadband users and like I stated, most people in this world have dialup, not broadband. Its just we don\'t have a choice.

Yes I definetly have to agree it depends where you live. Where I am at now Cable is as cheap as $29 a month but my old place before this DSL wasn\'t available and Cable started at $120 a month. They had some deal with the apartment complex I was living in so they were the only company you could get highspeed access from. We thought about getting a cable modem but as soon as we found out the $120 a month was only for 128kbs we ended up sticking with dial up. That was a painful year for internet usage.

ahh but the secret is (here in the USA) if you have dialup as I do congress passed a law several years ago that if you have a dialup connection your ISP MUST provide you with at least a connection of 53k. My connection was hitting 22000 until I threw a fit with the ISP and now I connect at 53000 and I live WAY out in the country and have tried the sat routine and all else proxy servers modem boosters and that was the only thing that really worked

hehheh :D So true.

That\'s why I\'m with NTL BB. Great prices and service (although they knocked it down from unlimited bandwidth to 1GB/day - but that\'s enough), and discounts for us student scum ;) \\o/

Here\'s another thing about BT: They provide talk21.com, which I use, in order to help the governments policy of everyone being able to have a free internet acount in the 21st century. But now they\'re changing it so you have to pay per month. OK, ok, there is still a version that is free, but it is total pants. Low storage and no other way to check it apart form loggining into their website every time. I hate web-based email.

P.S. Sorry for the slightly OT BT rant
