Title: how does the lvling up system work?

What is the leveling system going to be like? is it going to be like diablo(nice and simple)?

Reach a certain amount of experience and you get a to choose certain amount of stats and 1 spell point to make a spell stronger or get a new one and the spell limits so you cant get the very powerful spells at level 2.
 
So is it going to be something like this or something more complex?

Characters will not have levels- only skills. If you kill alot of monsters with your short sword, your skill in using short swords will increase. If you run around alot, your stamina will increase. If you craft many items, your crafting skill will increase.

This leveling system is like no other. You are *not* required to kill hordes of enemies in order to raise your character. You will truely be able to specialise in particular areas or try to be a \'Jack of all trades\'. That will, however (and obviously) take much longer to do.

Hi,

I have a question about the skills plans, and thought I may as well take this thread as an opportunity to ask it.

I like the idea of skills and not levels, but what is the plans in terms of skill cap? Will there be a maximum total  amount of skill you can have at any point? So if you\'re good at something and start training another skill up, you eventually have to \"forget\" your old skill to make room for the new? Or is it unlimited? So that, in theory, with enough time you could become very skillfull in all trades?

Just wondering. Cheers.

How would you know you are stronger than another person? Do you have to count every single skill point?

Ps: some parts of it is alot like rune scape though (the most hated game :D) *starts remembering the game and the graphics* *shivers*:P

In theory, maybe so, but I think some would be contradictory (the different magics, races, and blessed stuff might not be able to be used by a person who excels in the total opposite), so actually maybe not...there is also the idea in the wish list which is the same as yours (the forget thing) which I think is a very good idea.

Its something like this:

Axe needs skills:
9 in combat
9 in strength
0 in magic
# in ect.

FireBall needs skills:
5 in combat
0 in magic
9 in magic
# in ect.

same with armour, items, and other stuff...

Short answer is that you don\'t - in real life, how do you know that you\'re stronger than them? They might be able to beat you at an arm wrestling match, but perhaps you could run longer.  There\'s no formula for \"better\", but I\'m guessing that most experienced spellcasters could lay teh smack down on J. Random Newb in a gladiators arena.

How PlaneShift works.

1) Kill, get good.
2) Kill more, get better.

a) Kill everyone who challenges you to a duel in the arena, and you\'re the best.

b) If you die, the thing you were fighting is better. Go back to 2).

There\'s no other way. :)

its actually been used in another game before (if i say the name it gets censored out for whatever reason)

horrible game, but it has that same leveling system...and its the best lvling system ive ever seen

Also remember that you\'ll clearly se a difference between those that are more skilled than others by looking at their equipment they have, ie, weapons, armor, cloaks or whatever. Just learn what items requires what skill and how much and you can probably quess the whereabouts of the players strength/power.

i guess the forgetting thing only counts the time you\'re online, that way you wont loose skill if you cant login for a loooong time

...haven\'t played runescape though ...but let\'s keep personal favours in games aside ;)

i think you pretty much got explained how the skills system in PS will work (or how it already does in the dev/cvs version)

and don\'t forget that PS is *NOT* meant to be another hack\'n\'slash game ...there\'s tons of those already out there, some good ones are even free ...it\'s about role-playing, baby!! :]

once you learn certain things, you never forget them. you might get a little rusty, but it all comes back if you\'ve trained well enough.

that\'s an interesting thought tho... skill decay?
