Title: Deny magic
Post by: Sinon on January 19, 2004, 12:22:12 am
I would want the ability to completly deny all magic use at character creation, and therefore also get bonus to something else.

The denial should not only be on magic:

Use of all kinds of weapons (allowed to use the most simple of staffs for mages, and bows should maybe not be included here)
alt. Use of all ranged weapons / all melee weapons

Use of any armor

But most important is magic, since everyone can do physical stuff like lifting a sword or carry an armor.
If you choose no magic at all, theres no use for mana, and no mana-bar should show up.

I think Sinon means that there should be an option to have your character not be able to do certaing things but get a bonus in other areas. Like if you select that you would never want to use magic you would never be able to but you might get a bonus in melee or something. At least that is what I think Sinon meant.

Sorry If I am wrong and this isn\'t what you mean it\'s just what I got from it.

Yeah, good idea Sinon for people who never use magic in any game....but why would anyone want to deny the magic? ;( ...poor magic

There is already such a thing in the advantages/disadvantages part of the character creation. Although it doesn\'t stop you from using magic at all, it does allow you to have a negative modifier to the magics, allowing you to have bonuses in fighting, and against poison etc.

Edit: I don\'t think an option to get rid of magic totally should be at charater creation, but there should be an NPC which, for a very small donation depending on your skills, can erase magic from you, and give you bonuses to other things. This would stop accedents during character creation, where people might decide to use magic later, but can\'t. It\'s good for when people are certain that they want to get rid of magic later on in the game.

well i think ps is supposed to be an open ended game where at any point you can start to become proficient in any other form of combat, defence, etc. There are already negitive modifiers like xordan said so there isnt a reason to make you never be able to use magic. i was going to bring up the fact you could put down stats but i thought this might not be what you were trying to get across. Good idea though.

I did that: i chose a penalt for each magic domain, like that i got plenty of bonuses to spend on adventages.

I think that\'s enough to get rid of magic.

I wonder what those penalties mean?
Weakness to certain magic ways? Negative modifier to casting certain magic ways? Or maybe both? Or something else?  ?(
The description only states \"malus to the ... way\"

I am wondering the same thing.  I am new to this game and this forum, but going thru it it seems that I can put disadvantages on all magic to make other skills better.  Now of course that is good for me..., but isn\'t that cheating or exploiting a bit?  I mean that would seem to really help out a warrior not to have any magic if he wants to be a lot of brute streangth and defense.

How ever, it sounds like if I were to be hit with any kind of magic my resistence to it would be bad and I would surely be injured..., is that a correct assumption?  Take Care.

if u put a disadvantage on crystal (this is the healing one right?) does that mean if a friend heals you it does less?

hmm... good point, i also haven\'r read a post yet in which advantages/disvantages etc are clarified, nor to what effects the poison and disease immunity will have, and on what kinds. with effects i mean total immunity, or less dmg, or cut in time duration etc. does any1 have a link that clarifies these things?

Imho, the current system is completely unbalanced. If you don\'t plan to get a mage, you can easily win 6 free avantages without penalty. On the other hand, a mage can\'t easily gain avantages.
I think it\'s a nice idea to remove all the 6 magic disavantages and replace it by a big magic disavatage (and that give only one free advantage of course :P). This will make the thing fairer. And in all the cases, the number of free avantages you can win must be the same in *all* the paths you can drop: (ie building, warrior, thied, mages).

Warriors: Heavy weapons and armors (can\'t wear heavy weapons/armors like axes and stuff)
Mages: Bad magic (the name say all i think ;)
Thief: Noisy (make you do a lot of noise)
Worker: Clumsiness (make you fail a lot when you try to create/build something.

I think this is the four main path someone can choose. There shouldn\'t be more disavantages or this will mean someone who use only one path will get too many free avantages. The aim of this screen is to force the player to choose - what\'s the point if the player can choose all the avantages without losing anything on the other hand?

rumor:
the character creation in cb has been given a major overhaul(meaning that this problem has been addressed as well as many other balancing factors?).

fact:
the only part of character creation in mb that has any actual affect on the character is how the character looks(theres no point right now in choosing advantages/disadvantages, stats, skills, ect.).
