Post by: neotepz on January 22, 2004, 08:54:03 pm
as im posting right now im waiting for the first load to complete, i was wondering firstly if;

a 550mhz AMD processor, 256mb RAM, GeForce 4 MX 440 64mb pc will be able to run this program?

and secondly does it matter if i run other programs and do thigns ont he pc whilst i wait for it to load the open gl  for the first time?

it might run on your PC, although 550 mhz isn\'t enough to even move around i think, 256 mb RAM is also a bit on the low side as PS uses 200 mb RAM sometimes.

Well, here are my specs:

Athlon XP 2600+
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB
512MB PC3200 DDR
40 GB HDD

Those are about the only ones that should affect gameplay. Now, even with those, gameplay is at best choppy, and its not lag, its just when I turn around and face, say, the city centre, the whole thing just hits 0.001 FPS and doesn\'t respond for ages.
If this IS an engine problem, will we see optimizations later to solve this issue?

And also, can anyone tell me what to put in certain CFG files so as to optimize the performance on my machine with these specs. If you can do this, It would be much appreciated :)

Thanks

Oh my god.
I knew that the game runs slowly, but never thought it would run slowly on a computer with so much ran, a decent CPU, and such a powerful graphics card... I remember talking to the CrystalSpace guys about this (long time ago), they told me that PlaneShift itself is at fault, while the people here point the finger at the CrystalSpace engine.

I wish I knew what is at fault here. I do not have much knowledge in this area, but perhaps the CS engine is not meant to be used to load so many textures/polygons.

At one time, I thought of contributing to this project by making maps. A very interesting idea, however, I cannot play this game with the coputer I have (which seems to be not just my problem).

My computer\'s specifications:
*P4 @ 2.66 GHz (533 MHz FSB)
*512MB 2100 DDR (480 because of shared GFX card -_-)
*32MB shared memory (Trident CyberAladdin-P4) with *OpenGL support, and DX7, DX8 support.
*WindowsXP

The funny thing is, PS runs at the same level of performance on this computer as it does on my old Celeron 633MHz with an 8MB shared GFX card... *cough*

...there must be a mistake somewhere...

2.0 ghz P4
512 ram
winxp

runs 1 ps client great, but cannot operate 2 at the same time

2.8 ghz P4
512 ram
winxp

runs 1 great, 2 slowly

1.6 ghs P4
128 ram
win 2k

runs 1 slowly

The first 2 laptops run the game great although they have decent specs

The 1.6 actually runs the game on 128 ram with an OS that requires 256.  Now, if that isn\'t crazy, I don\'t know what is.  I do know how to keep the running processes at minimal memory fairly well.  Anyway, I listed my results to let everyone know its safe to at least try PS on your computers.  Whether their specs are amazing, or boarderline.

well this answers my questioni wuz just about to ask why it always stops responding just as i try to play i guess it\'s cuz i only have 128 ram

but could someone tell me what the actual system requirements are? i couldn\'t find them anywhere on the main site

I dont think there is any official requirements(that i know of) and it always says it is not responding for me and i get in. Just wait 3-5 mins if it doesnt work then there is something wrong :D

I have a 1.8+ XP Athlon, a Radeon 9600 PRO and 512 of RAM, and I get between 15 and 120 fps (town centre - temple) on a W2K SP2 system. So I guess it\'s not only about hardware specs but also about configuration and drivers (not that I did anything special).

The game is running on a rather slow, 4-5 year old 45GB WD Caviar HD with currently 2 GB space left ;)
Windows SWAP-file is on another physical drive. I don\'t know how far these settings take effect on performance

It\'s all down to buggy game code. It has nothing to do with your specs... well, except RAM I guess. PS tends to eat up about 200mb, so it\'s a good idea to have +512mb.

Other than that, there\'s nothing you can do, and your specs don\'t matter. :)
