I\'m pretty new here and I\'m a bit confused about people saying that this is free. I would understand the demos and open betas being free, but some people make it sound like there is no fee, ever. I probably just misunderstood, so all i\'m looking for is clarification.
Thx for your help

The idea is for it to be free, but most likely if they cannot work out a good way to generate money then we\'re skrewed. I think there gonna host the game on there servers but here\'s a list of other ideas people have been throwing around:
1. pay for extra items (just for show no extra advantages)
2. a mandatory banner clicking campaign
3. Fylers and ads players can buy in game.
4.Donations
5.Server contributions (people offer servers for the game)
6.Free servers (really crappy)
7.Maybe a supped up cd version that people can mail away for? (my idea)
there are alot more ideas but here are some of the latest of read about.

Then who is programming this game? And who\'s doing the art and stuff? I find it hard to believe that they are doing this for free. I don\'t know about this, it seems unreasonable to have a free mmo. MMO\'s have an inital payment and a montly fee, and they are worth it. To have it totally free to the gamers must be a pretty damn hard task. Oh well, good luck with it! :)
-
Yes, they are doing it absolutly FREE and they also said they are pretty sure they will have no banners :D
we got cool developers so they want no profit off of this ;) except if they wanna apply for a job doing things like this, it owuld look pretty good if they made a mmorpg :D
-
all people designing the game are volunteers, infact, i personally want to get on the team. the servers they have are not crappy cmhitman, i mean not everything that is free is bad, planeshift for example:)
-
yeah.. setting up a server doesnt require a very good system most of the times... i\'ve set up lots of servers.. (kingpin, uo, opflash etc.) and most of the times it worked absolutely fine.... i could even play the game on the same computer without having lag.. (and there were also other players) so erhm.. i think if they just put 1 good computer somewhere there server will work good... (depending on how they created the server software)..
hmm... I hope you guys understand what i mean.. i just woke up so i write a bit unclear :))
-
I\'ve ran a website server from my computer and it was a nightmare. Before that I would never lag, my cable connected to yahoo.com was at 22 ping, which was very fast. Then with the server up, once only a few people started downloading some pictures, I got pings in the range of 5,000! After about a week I decided to stop running it from my computer. So the moral of the story, Planeshift will have to have an expansive server run the game. Maybe one of them is rich and can pay for it... I don\'t know... but it won\'t be free. Hopefully someone will donate the server ;) .

no banners? ?( it should have banners! banners are no problem for me at all, as long as the team are gettin money and im gettin to play u can put all the banners u want.
-
I have to agree, most people really don\'t mind banners. They are also usually unnoticable in many cases. If we just have a banner when we were loging on to play, and if most of us were commmited to clicking it every time we sign on, it could help a lot! And for those who don\'t like banners, even they probably wouldn\'t mind seeing one for a few seconds while loging on. I don\'t see any draw backs, the money could really help pay for a nice server. Maybe Planeshift could cut a deal with a server hosting company, it could really help. So what do the devs think about this...?

I think charge for a CD version/Donations is a good first logical step. Lets just hope thats enough to support Planeshift.

Banners are not a good idea. You make chump change from them and all they will do is increse system/bandwidth requirements, and are very difficult to add onto the Crystal Space engine.

In reply to some of your ideas hitman:
1. pay for extra items (just for show no extra advantages)
I\'m almost absolutely positive that this won\'t happen, every player gets exactly the same opportunities. So a special weapon is going to cost you lots of tria\'s :)
3. Fylers and ads players can buy in game.
What idiot would buy banners? :)
7.Maybe a supped up cd version that people can mail away for? (my idea)
Maybe a good idea, but i thinks smart people would dld the game and sell them theirselves for lower prices. :(

U actually prefer to pay for a game? Plus that working for PS is fun! I get to make up stories and legends. Plus that it improves my english (I\'m Dutch). I love it! And devs in other divisions think exactly the same way about it!

If they would be selling the CD, that would be copyright infrigment and they could goto jail for 2 years.
-
hmm.. how do you want to prevent it?
the whole world is selling cd\'s to each other, and only 1 of the 10000000000 illegal cd sellers is caught..
so i think people will copy it and sell them yes..

OK I think I have the solution. ?PlaneShift brought to you by Dell? [Fill in any large Tech Company]. The idea would be to have Dell (or other) provide the server(s) on their existing connection to the net and they get the sponsorship rights. What Tech company would not jump at the chance to get the goodwill of 100,000 geeks with very little cost to themselves? I am an IT manager and when purchasing items that are technically the same I go with the company I know and like. So when I go to purchase my next 20 PC?s I chose Dell over HP (or others) because Dell was nice enough to provide me with free entertainment. Thoughts?

if somebody could find an company that wants to host the server.. so they could advertise at planeshift then its a very very good idea.. but well.. i think its not easy to find such an company :)

Well, i think he actually means like special ingravings on weapons and armor

so just another painting?
hmm could be nice.. having a shield with your guild logo on it.. but i doubt if people will pay for it..
well they can always try it..

Hm..Im new here, got excited when I first heard about the game. This is my idea:
Create a Website that is essential to the game. It will have much information like player stats, information, news, downloads, and whatever other ingenious things you can figure out.
In order to enter certain sections, you have to go through many advertisements. Such as the signing up ones (I think those are extra dollars). I am sure that people are willing to sign up for some crappy advertisement and create another email address inorder to play this wonderful game for free.
Also, in the members section, if you want to get a loan for extra gold, you can either pay from paypal or do a few sign up tasks. This way, Players want gold so they get YOU gold in real life. Just remind players that they need to click on the banners and e.t.c. or the game will be extinct.
Many players who like the game will probably do so, players that don\'t will rebel by not clicking. Another way to generate revenue is to sell webspace on your server also. For the guilds and such, sell a monthly 5/mo or such for a website that will allow stats and e.t.c. This may take a bit of work but it may eventually work out.
Free Advertisement is not bad either. You can make a referal program also that will encourage people to get people to sign up. Maybe a level up? or points that you can trade in to get a good weapon. Kind of like those game places where you trade in tickets, maybe have Referal points to trade in for awesome and rare weapons, spells, e.t.c. Your imagination is your plane.
Another way to generate revenue is to sell mailing lists. Of course player\'s will have their real email address, but if you could get the word out to create ANOTHER email address just for the \"other\" advertisments, you could sell mailing lists and make extra dollars. This way everyone benefits except the spammers.
Also another way to generate revenue is of course, auctioning weapons and selling customizations. Only the most dedicated members will do so though, I doubt you will be able to profit from that after all of the work and labor involved. But maybe you will make a few dollars off of it.
Another way is to put the game files onto FilePlanet somehow. This way you will save bandwidth from your own server. I am not too sure about FilePlanet regulations but it seems to me that you can put about any kind of files on their. Since PlaneShift is an RPG. Maybe you can set up a PlanetPlaneShift in addition to this webpage and use the benefits for your own purposes. Again, I stress my ignorance toward this idea.
In conclusion, There are many ways to generate revenue. They are all around. Subspace, a free game since 1997 or 8, is still functioning by using various free servers. Now in the year 2002, the game as a whole has about 20,000 servers. The way they can do it is by creating many many servers which do not take up so much bandwidth, putting certain people in charge of each server. Connecting them together is a single billing server which will unite Chats, and other such things. The servers run great. I get 230 ping even though the server is in Finland.
The is all that I must say.

i think having just a couple of banners won\'t be bad at all, as long as game is free.
what the devs can do is to have a member service along with the free.
On the member service there can be more weapons, a bigger world, more quests, and such.
also the members would have a faster server(not that the free server should be slow just that the member should be faster.)
updates gets implamented into member serveice first then into the free or some implements just stay in the mebers game.
or u can have lotteries with prizes like u can be game master for like a day or something
idon\'t know about that last one.

heya gate master

i think that even if they wanted to they couldn\'t take much money forthemselves because the game engine is freeware and i think if they did thy\'d have to pay a certain amount to the creators of the crystal engine. but say if they where using the money not for themselves but for servers or something it might be legal.

You know, there are games online where you can use money from your own bank account and give it to the people who develop the game and in exchange they give you cybermoney. Of course, not the opposite way. And there would be many other (more fun) ways, to get ingame money, like just slaying monsters or something.
