Title: Comments to Matzes Diary
Post by: MatzeB on April 17, 2002, 08:18:40 am
Hey, link.
I\'m quite sure you would cry if we would release the demo like it is. Everytime someone leaves the server you have a chance of 1 to 3 at the moment that the server crashs, so I\'m sure we should fix this before we release :)
Also it\'s a TechDemo: Only walking around and chatting - No pterosaurs.

Sorry i was half asleep when i wrote that reply to your other post. I noticed it later and couldnt find delete button. But i was just kidding about the phetasaurs, take your time, i would like to be able to explore and leave without server crashes.

hehe...
ya, that would suck... Every 2 minutes the server crashes because someone leaves... that make some one stressfull, and you don\'t want lawsuits against ya already(lol, just kidding). :D

All where gana be able to do is Talk and walk? No Jumping? lol... that kinda sucks too... but on the other hand, wen it comes where we will be able to train and stuff, will know the land quite well. :)

Lets hope this game comes out soon, befor someone looses there life... no pun intended :P ... or rush.

THe game isnt even Beta yet, There would be no way to sue, even if it blew up your monitor and burned your house down, The Disclaimer on most betas states that they are not liable for damages and this isnt even there yet. About Jumping. i havent heard about it i dont know if it will ever be in.

Only Linux??  Bummer....

Anyone think it could, and if so, tell me how, please. :)

No You repartition your Hardrive and Install it.
Title: WHAT?!?
Post by: cmhitman on April 22, 2002, 12:04:15 am
Since when was this a linux project and not windows?
i thought everyone knew that micro$oft was the standard for everything consumer computer?
Title: Blah!
Post by: Tok'ra on April 22, 2002, 12:10:23 am
I dont wana format my comp(again)... ;(

you think I could Install Linux, then uninstall Windows. but not loosig anything ?

cmhitman: there making a version for both OS, so like that Everyone can play!! :D But latelly he only got the Lixus version to work properly enough to release, I know, it sucks, but diffrent OS\'s means some bug will or woun\'t be there. : /
Title:
Post by: cmhitman on April 22, 2002, 12:37:58 am
it\'s funny though.
the linux version done before the windows.
probably cause all programmers for windows would expect to get paid and wouldn\'t wanna join a free programming team. and there are alot more people who programm free aps for linux.
Title:
Post by: corsairk8 on April 22, 2002, 01:52:40 am
Please dont listen to these totally unfounded rumours, both versions of the game will be ready for release. Almost all platform-specific problems are eliminated and most of the bugs remaining are common to both linux and windows. Also note that the windows installer is complete, work is going on for a linux installer. The release will be for all supported platforms, otherwise we wouldnt release it.

Also, windows isnt the standard for everything to do with computing, quite a few people use linux. I myself use it, and many of my friends who program regularly do too. It isnt the best consumer-grade operating system but it can be nice if you have the right skills. I recommend people try it to see if they like it, and if not they can go back to windows.

Either way, players will not be advantaged depending on their operating system, their connection bandwidth and latency, or their geographical position. The game will attempt to cater the same for most people who play modern games.

Your comments are always interesting, and the team has a good number of open-source programmers, but I would say that were mostly balanced between windows and linux programmers. Either way, dont go installing linux if all you want is to play planeshift, because Tok\'ra was wrong in stating that it was a linux project, it is multi-platform and no official release will be out only for a specific operating system.

I too like the Matzeb\'s diary and think it should continue as long as possible through these demos so we can pay attention on what is happening in planeshift.

On another note, the server is looking more and more stable, and there is also a script in place to automatically restart it after any crash. Note that it hasnt been tested with many more than 3-5 players, and the server could easily go down occaisonally due to a crash or upgrade.

The demo will probably be coming soon, hopefully after we can at least get a decent bit more testing into it and fix more bugs. Until then, I hope you will stick with this project and wait it through till the end. This is only the first step in a huge project.

My bad,

but thank u for clearing that up with us.
I could have sworn i read somewhere on the forum about the windows version being way to buggy and the linux version being the only stable version but maybe i was wrong or outdated info
Title: Wut?
Post by: Tok'ra on April 22, 2002, 02:36:30 am
Blahh!! I never said it was a only Linux Platform :P
I ask if it was only on Linux(the TechDemo) at me moment, because thats what he put in his Diary, so I am not at fault here!!  Take back your accusations!! lol :D

Title:
Post by: Gion on April 22, 2002, 12:23:08 pm
I am glad we know it for sure now , about the linux and windows thingy.

It seems to me that there arent many bugs left so i expect the demo really soon. But you never know what will happend.

To all devs , keep going , you guys are doing great.

Gion.

MAtzeb,

About the quest.

There could be 2 npc who dont like each other and hade a figth.
They dont wanna talk to each other but they r brothers and their mother want them to be friends again.

They have to talk it out but they wont talk to each other.
So the npc1 gives you a msg , you walk to the other npc2 and got to type the same msg. That nps2 give you a awnser and you go back and so on.

Dunno if this is a option but it was the first thing that i could think of with only walking and chatting for a quest.

I hope you can use it
Gion.
Title:
Post by: MatzeB on April 23, 2002, 02:57:58 pm
good, idea
though I had other things in my head. Why writing stupid scripts, if we can have real 100% NI (natural intelligence :), someone (a real person not a script) should take the DM role and play the 2 brothers. And we\'ll have funny disputes I hope. Not just telling the same sentence again...
I\'ll ask our 3d team if they can provide a new skin for 1 of the races, so that the NPCs look different to the normal players...
Title:
Post by: Gion on April 23, 2002, 03:04:53 pm
Aha , i see what you wanna do now.

Maybe i can come up with something

Gion.
Title:
Post by: Kada-El on April 23, 2002, 03:37:04 pm
One idea perhaps for part of a dialogue based quest could be based around riddles or questions that you must solve to be allowed to pass to a new area, or to get to the next part of the quest. Progressively harder riddles (or questions) must be answered/solved in order to progress with the quest - you could even evolve it into some form of competition or ranking, based on your progress, if you can come up with enough material. This quest could be reset and replaced with new material after an allocated period of time.

Might be too difficult with only a couple of NPCs though, heh imagine the crowding. Maybe stuff could could be announced or posted in a central location. Don\'t know how you could handle it really - just an idea though ;)

Title: Loopers!! lol : /
Post by: Tok'ra on April 24, 2002, 10:24:36 am
Is the only problem left is the loop in the client ???  :))

If so Hurrah!! maybe we can have the TechDemo by the weekend!! :D

btw, wen we will make an account, can we pick a race and all that ? or is it just gana be one race at the moment(ex. human) ?? ?(
Title:
Post by: Link on April 24, 2002, 11:09:20 am
Hmmm Tok, i think the developers have said that we will only have a few races to chose but these will not be the permanent accounts we use

Thanks for the ideas above. The 2 brothers fight each other theme combined with riddles and questions should make a funny thing. I doubt that\'ll be too crowded because we have to limit connections anyway (I\'m sorry). We\'ll only let 10-20 people on our server depending on how big the load is.

Some wrods to char creation:
Well char creation will work for all races right now. ALthough you\'ll notice that only the 3 above will be displayed, (all others will look like stonebreakers :)

Also I doubt that you want to keep your char from teh first demo on. Because we don\'t have that much rules defined yet, it\'s hard to say wich stats or stats combintaions will be good, later and you can\'t gain experience points at the moment. So the demo is more or less getting a bit of flair for the game. The main reason for the tech demo is more to convince ourself that we\'re able to do it and to attract more developers helping us...

What is a NPC?
Title:
Post by: Kada-El on April 24, 2002, 02:31:33 pm
Only 10-20 people allowed on the server at anyone time? Oh no - how will we all manage to get a taster? ;(  You going to have somesort of queing system?

NPC stands for non-player character - i.e. not controlled by a player, but automatically by the PC or maybe by GMs.
Title:
Post by: Kenny on April 24, 2002, 02:55:50 pm
And what are GM\'s?
:D
Title:
Post by: Kada-El on April 24, 2002, 04:04:53 pm
Kinda like DMs (Dungeon Masters) from traditional non PC based RPGs. They can set events in motion in the game world, or perhaps control NPCs or monsters. Esentially they would have control of the game world.

I\'m sure the GMs will have extensive powers in game and will moderate inappropriate player behaviour as well. This role will no doubt be taken up by trusted people quite high up in the development teams.

Dont say that, i seen them a long time ago, 2 months?

Then after 2 or 3 months the new forum came.
I am watching planeshift for almost a year now.
Title:
Post by: MatzeB on April 26, 2002, 01:04:12 pm
you\'re watching it longer than me :)
Well mid of last week I was saying we can releale tomorrow, but you can\'t beliefe how much bugs popup... We\'ll onyl release if we think the thing is at least 98% stable, wich is not the case yet :( And I say it the last time, I CANT GIVE YOU A DATE. When I find no new bug and fix the last old one we could release in 2 days (1 day internal testing next day uploading and announcing). At the moment we have only 1 known bug, but that was also the case last week :( and in the time between we found and fixed 5 others...
Title:
Post by: alcapalis on April 26, 2002, 01:10:41 pm
yo matzeb, take your time dude.. nobody wants a demo thats so buggy that nobody can test it.... so just debug it and we\'ll see it when its 98% save :)

Besides the latest screen shots have only been there for just over a month, so they are not that old!

You just sounded like you were completely new to all this when you were asking things like \'what is an NPC\' ;) :P

Indeed, running 3 copies is very slow on the frame rate and therefore difficult to control. Running 4 is nearly impossible.

Thanks for the testing offers, but that probably won\'t work, because you need to have 3 points:
a bit experience with c++ and more experience in compiling bigger projects with msvc. Alternatively a running linux would be fine (in linux, compiling should be much easier...) I can\'t give you binaries for testing, because while a testrun we usually change the code alot and you need to rebuild that directly with your own compiler...
Another thing is that you should live in a timezone around GMT, (I live in GMT +1) so that we could meet each other...
If someone could still help me with this I wouldn\'t mind.

Matze,

I would not have a problem assisting in your testing adventures. I have all the above said requirements (except windows).. however, my computer isn\'t too happy about games.. so 2 copies at minimal frame rate (6-8FPS) is really all I could deal with. I just ordered in a ATI Radeon 7500 and an AMD 1.4 mostly because I wanted to assist in testing on this project. But for now, I could deal with what I have. Please contact me on OpenProjects IRC if you would like my help.
