You can tell it was written by an Intel guy :) Most of it seems to be concerned with procedural/fractal generation of geometry, which is a reasonable technique for doing a lot of \"detail\" without a lot of work. Also it concerns itself with performance-adaptive techniques, which are somewhat present in the CrystalSpace New Renderer (which is designed to optionally, but not necessarily, use cool things like pixel shaders).
