Title: How will skills work in CB
Post by: MercenaryVII on March 17, 2004, 02:09:20 pm
In CB how will the skills work. i am assuming that we still get the starting charecter skills points but what happens after this. do you get skills up whenever you do something. can you only do the skills you have selected in the start or is this only a starting bonus.

just search the forums, there are 100 of topics aout this. No one really exactly know what it wil be like, but it will probably be like allot of games.
Starting char you can choose your begin skills, and you can train in everything, also non-start skills.
The more you train the better you get and if you dont train the skill will decrease

In the long run the skills you choose at creation will probably not have a great effect over your character.  It is more of a way to give you an initial boost at start up.  So for example you may be given an item ( say if you like mining you could start with a pickaxe ).   Then in game it is up to you to choose which path you take.  The skill system is ( or will be ) fairly complex involving training and practice different skills.

if Im not mistaken only decrease of skills when your logged in ofcource. Would be a damn shame if you went on a holiday and came bakc and you char isnt worth anything

Lol I don\'t think the devs would want a game to be that frustrating. I am not a big fan of decreasing skills myself, but I think it should be fairly hard to gain in skill in the first place.

Decreasing of skills is not a good idea X( Your right it would make the game more frusturating, work hard on a character and find out its nothing anymore!

yeah... I don\'t think that would be a really fun thing... if I just sat there one day talking to people for a long time... and lost all my skills, it would be bad... Maybe if you made some skills mutually exclusive such that learning one skill decreases the other?

i hate skill decrease, that would mean that after a while you cannot gain any more points for a skill since if you start training, another skill would become less, and you would have to put all your time into keeping your skills.

i do hope that your skillpoints will be like 10-20 per lvl at start (depends on how high your lvl is) since each \"updrade\" will cost more. if it is just 1 skillpoint per lvl, you need at least 3 lvl for a new skill. or you would have to gain lvl fast, like 1 per 2-3 monsters.

IIRC there will be no levels. Your skills improve as you use them.

my thought is that it will be like morrowind how you pick a few skills and the ones that you didnt pick become almost impossible to level up on

i knew i should have put alchemy on major skill on morrowind :O

morrowind does have a good skill system, but there are also a few flaws in it. There you could learn all skills, but i never heard about a magican that wore the strongest and heaviest armor. Mages sooner wear light armor with a lot of magic/hp/mp/armor bonusus, then the same armor as a warrior.

i dislike the idea about deacreasing skill.

will you be able to still obtain the abbilities of one job that you have trained in with a different type of job?

If our skills decrease over time, I will be sorely dissapointed. Im sorry, but although it would be more realistic, it would decrease the fun ALOT. I hope the devs read this post and do not make skills decrease over time. I think (almost) all of us agree with this...
