Title: Game server
Post by: slick on March 31, 2004, 08:22:09 am
Will the source for the server be released also? Or is it included in the client source download?

if you think your missing it, or you have accidentaly deleted it, use

So i can set up the server on my home lan & play the game there without internet? My isp in South-africa has slow international ping times, and I would still like to play this , what seems to be a nice game.

Thanks for your help

There\'s nothing wrong with playing on your own private server on a LAN. Go ahead. :)

What the devs don\'t want to see, however, are \"shards\", where the gameplay/art etc has been altered and the server hosted on the Internet for anyone to play on. They don\'t want parodical versions of the game such as \"Pornshift\" to be created and slanderise the name of the real game.

But as long as you\'re just playing on a network, then it\'s fine.

Thanks, thats all I needed to know.
I Havn\'t downloaded the game yet, so also didn\'t know if the server is included with the project, so I didn\'t want to waiste the time downloading something if I can\'t use it.

Cheers

Get the source from the CVS and compile it.

Are you referring to this file from sourceforge \"planeshift-0.2.010FullSourceAndArt.tar.gz\"? Do i have to compile it in linux, or can I use windows? Also do you know which operating system the server runs on, if it\'s linux, I will just install it on a vpc & run it in the background. Sorry that I am such a newbie.

Thanks for your help!

Compiling and running the server is a non-trivial task.  I believe it typically runs under Linux; at least it needs MySQL.  It has also been run on Mac OS X (at least by people testing the Mac OS build).

Slow ping times probably won\'t be your limiting factor anyways, the game is pretty brutal on the graphics hardware.  The package you mention *probably* has everything you need, assuming that all MB art is included.

Does anyone know how to compile the server? I have all the packages installed on suse 8.0 & ran the sh build.sh to compile the game, but it seems it only compiles the client etc. not the server. What do I need to run to compile the server & to actually run it in linux.

Is there perhaps some documentation regarding this topic anywhere?

Thanks

Thanks for the help, thats just what I needed. I think that the Planeshift site should link to that url. Haha what did you guys think of the April\'s 1st hoakes? I thought they were being serious, & thought it was a bad idea to change the game to a futuristic setting.
I personally am glad that it was just a joke, as I was pretty upset, coz this game has sooooooo! much potential!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers
