Title: The Movie
Post by: Kiern on April 04, 2004, 01:40:24 am
Just so everyone knows, they posted a short movie on the main site (I know not many people check it much ;) )

Go download it!

Vengeance, your crazy man...the monsters scare me ;(

Nice models on those monsters.  I can see hydlaa got bigger as well. :D

The hills still look a bit square though, not to mention the dwarf killed himself repeatedly. :P

My god, it was painful to watch the dwarf try to bash his own throat in... But other than that, everything looks great :D ...I hope we\'ll be able to keep up with all those menu items. They look... plentiful.

Just some more houses on the hills, otherwise Hydlaa seems mostly the same... there didn\'t seem to be any distance culling though... we gonna be able to fog things out in CB?  I never have had many performance issues, but I know rendering the whole town isn\'t very friendly to most people.  I dunno if it was just the compression, but the hills were ugly AND blurry, is there any mipmapping going on yet?

The skeletal animation shows up very clearly though, and the walk cycle looks vastly improved over the current ones.  The monster models look fantastic as well, and that looks like a nice shield too.  Is that a dwarf or a hobbit though?  Or do the dwarves in PS have thick-but-not-hairy feet?

that looks fun. any chance of a fighting movie?
Title:
Post by: Xandria on April 04, 2004, 06:09:56 am
I thought acraig said it was MPEG-4 encoded, but when I checked it said it was encoded with DivX.

If you don\'t have the DivX codec installed, you won\'t be able to see the video (and the default Windows Media Player won\'t automatically download it for you).

If you need the codec:

Here (http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511.exe) for Windows (an executable to install just the codec, not their special \'player\')
Here (http://download.divx.com/divx/mac/DivX511Installer.sit) for Mac (I think it\'s just the installer, but I\'m not sure)
Here (http://download.divx.com/divx/divx4linux-std-20030428.tar.gz) for Linux (pretty sure it\'s just the codec)

Hope this helps :)
Title:
Post by: acraig on April 04, 2004, 06:15:56 am
Hmm, sorry about that. When I converted the nuv that Crystal Space genereates ( mencoder crystal000.nuv -o my_movie.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1600 ) I assumed that vcodec was mpeg4 :).

But yes, it should play in the free divx player. Thanks Xandria.

Those icons let you activate various windows, such as the chat window, info window, quest notebook, buddy list, guild admin window, etc.

will there also be an option is CB to change controls? not that you have to go to the file, but that there is some option or so where you can change default easilly? cause right now when walking i need both hand on my keyboard, and thus i cannot use my mouse at the same time.

*looks at the movie*

WE WANT MORE!!! :D movie is looking great. can you also put a movie where we can see a little bit of combat?
Title:
Post by: Draklar on April 04, 2004, 11:09:31 am

Hey Acrid, i remember you once said on some thread a long time ago that you were having problems with the dwarfs animation, like when he runs the axe goes through his head... I could see that happening in the movie... So, is that gona be fixed? (if it doesnt i dont care. Its still a great game.)

*sniff*
Somehow i cant download the movie, everytime I download it it\'s less than 17 MB and won\'t run.
/me begs for a mirror

*edit*
Everytime I download it it is a bit bigger. I\'ve downloaded it over six times now and I think i\'ll have to download it another 5 times or so before I have the whole movie. This is weird.  X(

p.s. Hooray for fast internet!

Zephyrus, you need DivX codec.

It\'s DivX encoded. Here\'s the codec:

Dammit Venge, you made me laugh!  X(
I can\'t waaaaaaaaaiiit to play CB now!  :(

They were showing how far along they were....it doesn\'t mean they\'re anywhere near finished.

And even if they were close they\'re not gonna predict a release date.  You never know when you will hit a last minute problem.

If you\'re using Linux/X11, you can use the Swiss-Army Knife of video players from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

It comes with codecs for just about *anything* :D

That new chat system seems to be a little slow and \"hard\" to use, and I wonder if it\'s anymore possible to see the chat window while playing without the need of opening the chat bar every time I have something to say...

Btw, the new music is nice, or actually it\'s great! I wish more songs to different game situations, like in the game Morrowind, if you haven\'t yet!!  ( I mean different style music while wandering around, while fighting etc.)

But the animation looks great! Although that jumping animation is the same as it\'s in MB, isn\'t it...?

My estimate: 2-3 months

yes, very nice. :)
Look forward to seeing the whole thing put together. Music is pretty cool, I take it it changes depending on your situation and position? I know there\'s battle music, as I\'ve heard it. But whatever, great work there from all of you. :D

INTENSE!! Made my arm hairs rise, only two other things can do that for me Lord of the Rings and Braveheart! Good Job, now theres three!

-Who cares when the release is? I don\'t want it to come until my new guild site is done and organized! Venge will you wait until then because that will be in a few weeks probally :D!
Title:
Post by: Entamis on April 04, 2004, 08:31:42 pm
Hmm.. My thoughts:
Finally, no more camera-on-a-stick, movement is very fluid now.
Chat window is nice, will it be possible to add your own tabs?
The new models look great, animations too, but there isn\'t any jumping animation yet, the guy is just running in the air, which doesn\'t look good.
You could put the music separately, so I wouldn\'t have to download the whole video again. Not a big deal though.

Keep the great work guys, finally we can see the progress with our own eyes. :-)

Yay, there\'s sound on the fire as well! :)

It\'s not Venge, but Acraig that\'s playing. :)

Great work Devs! I was wondering as to why none of the characters cast shadows, and weather they will do so in CB? Although I can?t wait for CB, I would rather see bad approximations of shadows as opposed no none at all. Again, way to go Devs! :D

It sends a note to a GM asking for help.  Say for example, your player got stuck somewhere you can send a petition to a GM asking to be teleported.  An available GM then gets this message and can teleport to your location, view the situation and take actions.

heck I rather just be exploring, there\'s no better feeling than knowing you are going on a long journey and not coming back for a long time, like Lord of the Rings. Like you start of in a small village knowing that everything will change when you get back, ahh its a great feeling.

If you need to install the Div X codec I suggest when prompted to only install the codec and the not the player becasue as far as I know the player is adware.

You can then run the movie on Windows Media Player.

From what I understand, shadows are very tricky to do, and increase the processing power to play tremendously. Yes, even simple ones. For those reasons, I doubt shadows will even be considered untill well after CB, but that\'s just an assumption. I could be wrong.

-Eric
Title:
Post by: Beregar on April 05, 2004, 11:16:56 am
Yeah, I guess shadows will impact rendering a lot, but ... I fo one would rather at least have blobs under the characters and scale down on resolution, sampling or texture detail than not have shadows at all, since it really helps the overall immersiveness - the characters just seem to be more \"there\".

With blobs I mean just that, a round darkening of the floor beneath the model, roughly the models diameter, the way some shooters had them, like Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy for example. That should not cost too much processing power.

Additional comment on the movie: nice. Really! It really shows progress is being made, and that is something that had been sadly missing around here...  I did not like the interface, though, it looked to cluttered (the buttons at the top). I guess it will be possible to skin it, and I have already resolved to do a skin.

My question would be: can you scale it as a whole (so it takes only 50% width of the screen if you have a high resolution), manually I mean (it doesn\'t just stay the same width in pixels, but scales to 100% of the screen width, unless I specify differently)?

Thats the second time you have called him acrid in this thread... its acraig, a-c-r-a-i-g. acrid means causing heat and irritation; corrosive; as, acrid secretions. Who knows maybe you are trying to insult him.

Anyway great movie, but the game still looks like it could use some work. What i personally want to see is real grass, real clouds (i mean it rains so much, but most of the time all i can see are the sides of the cavern) and finaly water effects. If you can make a game as graphically impressive as dark and light looks, then i will be impressed :) :P

Are you just left clicking on the link?  If you have your settings in IE to play music and movie links in the browser, it wont ask you to save it, it will just download the whole movie and then play it in your browser.

Just right click on in and hit \"save target as\" then you should get the right save window.

(I did double check the link right now in two browsers (IE and  Firefox) and it works in both).

Character modles would be nice, but i\'d be happy with just knowing wich races will be available. Just because i\'m planning out my characters, ones a hammerwielder and ones a nolthrir. Writing char descriptions and planning out skills, jobs and whatnot leads one to wonder about when his characters race will be available for use.

I think the movie is great. The monsters are original and the music fits. The graphics were great, too. The axe was a bit small and it kept going through the dwarve\'s head, though.

Overall, I loved the video, and it makes me very thirsty for the next release.

I hope my pc can run it, it looked like you need a good pc.
I think about 1024 memory or so.

Given that the game will be much...\"neatier\"...i would say...that it should be taking less specs that MB...well as far as memory is concerned...

I can run w/o much lag in Window mode..although i haven\'t tried to run in full screen mode ever since my upgraid...Here\'s my specs:

1Ghz
256 SDRAM
ATI Raidon 7500 64 DDRAM

Runs preaty smooth for me...

You upgraded your PC and still only have 256mb RAM...? ...oookay. Hehe.

But ya, like John said, Crystal Blue should by rights use less system resources. I\'m personally hoping to see more detailed graphics options, such as the ability to switch between texture detail modes, fog, view distance, etc.
